Do you have a digital camera?

And if so, how long have you had it for? I've had my current digital camera for the past 3 and a half years and by the looks of it, it went out on me (died). I thought that maybe it was just the batteries that needed charging, but after I charged them the camera won't turn on at all when I hit the power button.
Here I just used this camera a few days ago and it worked great. And now...nothing.
(Just for the record it is an OLYMPUS SP-320.)
Does anyone know how long digital cameras are supposed to last?

I have a digital camera and too tired ("but I donn wanna") to get it right now.
Its served me well these past... hmm, 3 years.
About your camera, is it not coming on completely or is it just the viewfinder? Well really in either case its not a good prognosis. I know its not the batteries since I'm looking up the SP-320s specs right now and I see AA batteries as the power source (unless your model is different). But then again, you use rechargeable batteries, maybe they are defunct now and that's the problem.
And about how long cameras last, its no guarantee or anything, but a rule of thumb is to use extended warranty as a measure. If you have 3 years warranty on the camera, it'll break down just after 3 years to the exact date. Okay maybe I'm being a bit dark about it, but I've seen it happen to two laptops of mine. Well with reasonable maintenance and use it should last 3-5 years maybe more. I have another older generation camera that still works (5+ years).

Hi sacmom: I do have a digital camera which is about 5 years old and treasured by me since it was given to me by my best friend at a time when I couldn't afford one. It has given me hours and hours of pleasure and I have managed to capture some great photographs on it during my travels. The only problem is its rather outdated now and unfortunately its night time photos are a mess. Everything becomes either a black mass or a blur of lights that have blended into one another. I hope I'll be able to buy one soon. Just for the record mine is a Kodak CX7330.

I'm not sure how long they are supposed to last but we have never had one last longer than a couple of years and some of them have lasted less than that. We have gone through almost 10 cameras in the the past ten years but we use them heavily, taking lots and lots of pictures.

I don't have one personally but my daughter has one and we share a suite together so when I need one I just use hers. I don't know the make or anything and since she has it in the car right now and she isn't home, I can't check.
We just used it yesterday when we went for a ride to the mountains. We took a lot of mountain pictures with it and I can show you some of the older ones we took since we haven't put the new ones on the computer yet as the camera is still in the car.
It takes pretty good pictures considering it wasn't very expensive. So here are a couple pictures we took with it and you can judge for yourself.

I could not keep a digital camera at my home , my daughters, kept asking to use them, my oldest lives on her own now and my youngest lives with her dad, so about 2 months ago I got a really good deal on a digital camera at our local Goodwill and
it has worked really good, except that it eats batteries like crazy.. anyone else have that problem ?

Actually, there have been some people that have had this problem. Check out jillhill's response (page 3, #23 of this discussion). There's a tip on there that just might come in handy!
Happy mylotting!

I have one but it broke. Mine only lasted 3 years. I need to get another so I can use it for my son's communication device. We can add pictures of things that are relevant to him. I haven't had the money to replace it after him going in for his surgeries and my husband not working.

I have no idea usually how long the digital cameras can last, I guess it depends on how we take care of the cameras too.
I bought my first digital camera in year 2005, which is 4 years ago. I just dropped it last week, and the backlight has gone, though I can still use it to take picture, the lens is still okay, just I have no idea what image I'm shooting, unless I use a light to shoot on the display screen. It's Panasonic Lumix FX-8. I think it's quite reliable and the battery is long lasting, no other issue I've encountered so far. I have just bought another digital camera, which is Lumix too. ^_^

That's pretty good that it still works after you dropped it.
I've never dropped mine, nor do I take a lot of pictures, so I was shocked to say the least when it wouldn't turn on. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was only the batteries that were bad! LOL Yep, my camera still works, after all!

I'm on my second camera now and sometimes it gives me issues. I think it's around 3 years old. Periodically I'll press the button to take a picture and it'll act as if it is about to, and then won't. I worry it's on it's last legs.
My first camera was fairly cheap, and had a sliding front that enclosed the lens. It got some sand stuck in it, and when you opened the lens, it wouldn't always register. I took it into a camera shop to see if it could be fixed, but they quoted me almost $80, and since the camera was only twice that brand new, I figured I would just buy a new one when I could afford it.

I was going to say that it was probably your batteries. I had physical therapy today and one of the electrical impulse units they use on me takes batteries. I was set up on the machine, was sitting enjoying the massage (it's an minimal electrical shock type massage) and the machine quit. They came and changed the batteries, started the machine back up and it went for about 30 seconds and those batteries quit. So they replaced the batteries for a third time and the machine worked for a minute and a half and quit for a third time! Finally they got some new alkaline batteries and put them in and the machine lasted for the fifteen minutes I was supposed to be on it.
I had my Nikon 2100 Cool Pix for 8 years. I need to do a small repair job on the battery compartment and it will work like new. I bought a Kodak digital earlier this year until I got the chance to repair the Nikon. I got the Kodak for about $40 (marked down from $125 because Target was discontinuing the model and the one I bought was the demo, plus a couple of the accessories weren't there, like the transfer cable. The clerk showed me a cheap way to down load the pix, with a $5 accessory). The Kodak has been working great, and it is a 8 mega pixel camera which is what I wanted for selling teddy bears on line. But, I use alkaline batteries, I've had too much problem with rechargables, including having them explode in the camera.

Hello Sacmom,
I have a digital camera too. I bought it about 7 years ago! It is still function very well till now. The model I am having now is Nikon Coolpix4300. I like it because it has a chargeable battery and the pictures that taken is very clear! It has been with me for all my vacation and holidays abroad.
But with the high tech now, many new brand and new features of digital camera are on the market. I wish I can get a new digital camera by this year end because I think the Nikon camera that I have now is kinda big in size and it is hard to keep in my hand bag, LOL!
I still in the midst of looking a good deal digital camera with all the good features! Any one have any recommend!

I haven't a clue how long they are supposed to last but my digital camera is almost 6 years old now. And it still works okay it is a Concord Eye. It has also been dropped a few times which I am surprised it still works because of that alone.
Have you checked the batteries? I mean sometimes they can only be charged so much before giving out. Maybe a fresh set will be able to work better. Also check the connections where the batteries connect since corrosion can build up sometimes and has to be scraped off to get a better connection.

Yes, actually I did...after I posted this discussion! LOL Sure enough it was the batteries and not the camera. My camera is a-ok and in working condition. Yea!

Yes I have a digital camera. I own a Sony. I have had it about a year now. I would rather have something else. But this one works. It was the one my husband picked. I have no clue how long digital cameras are suppose to last.I have never thought about it.

You've got my curiosity going, so I looked it up. Would it be any of the ones listed on this link:

and if so, which one is it?

Depending on how you care for and store your camera, and the quality of your camera it should last a good many years. Now the battery is a different matter. Rechargeable batteries are funny things. If you did not follow the charging directions the first time, or if you regularly charged the battery before it discharged completely (or most of the way, your battery life may have been shortened. Several things can kill a battery before it's time. These things should have been explained to you in your owners manual. Batteries must be "exercised" completely in order to maintain a long healthy life...just like us. Before you run out and replace your camera, try a new battery. If this should solve your problem. I would dig up your owners manual or look it up online and follow the manufacturers suggestions on the treatment and care of your battery.
Also please take into consideration that it may just be that your battery was only designed to last 3 or 4 years. I have a Sony Cybershot and I bought an extra battery to keep in my case. I alternate these batteries and let them discharge until I get a warning light before I recharge them. That way I have time to charge each battery properly and still have a battery to operate the camera while the other is charging. If a new battery solves your problem, I would go out and buy a second battery. That would insure you always have a standby, and the time to properly care for your batteries.
Hope this helps.

I had my Olympus point and shoot for a year. It was a gift. Before that I used a Canon Powershot for a year as well but that's because I gave it away when I got my Olympus.
Camera life is normally determined by the shutter count and you can research this because it varies per model and make.

hi Sacmom!
i have a Pentax DSLR now for almost more than 3 years and works perfect. I had another cam, sony T33 and its still running, about 5 yrs and counting.
i would say 3 years is a good time :) i'ld just buy another one. really.. these electronic gadgets are funny, you never know what happens. They do in general have a long life, but nobody can stop them having problems. I've had friends with very expensive DLSRs, and their cams crash..

I don't need to buy another one. It turns out the only thing that was wrong with my camera were the batteries I had been using. The camera still works great!
