We have a friend who does upholstery.

He lives out of town, but he says he is willing to do some work for us. I have a pair of chairs I got for a song over thirty years ago. They are really sturdy, made of mahogany, and upholstered. I have always hated the fabric, though. One of them has bottomed out, as well. I found a cool website that has discount prices on decorator fabrics and ordered some free swatches tonight. When I know how much I need, I already have enough money in my Pay Pal account which the fabric site accepts. I may need as much as fourteen yards. We will take the chairs to him and use the trip as a getaway.I am really excited about this.

I seem to just be lurking around the outside of the Lot mostly. I had a ton of freelance to get done, and I have been working at training some people to fill some shifts at my job. I still need one more evening staff person.I think it will be so great to have the chairs done up in something I truly like that I choose myself.

I always figured you had a lot to do with antiques, even though I knew you also were a hair dresser.

I meant to post some before shots, and I will do that and after, as well. I also plan to take pictures of the swatches I get. I thought the site I found was really nice. Hope it is as good as it seems.

hi GardenGerty that sounds really fantastic. I know so many chairs and furniture that one got many years back are really better made than todays anduses really nice wood too. so if'you get the upholstery fabric you want and get it all upholstered you will have a real bargain.

Hey Gerty! That sounds wonderful! I love to be able to take something that I have and either re-finish it or re-paint it and there is nothing more incredible than to be able to re-upholster furniture that you already have and already love! My Father and Grandfather were in the furniture business and used to upholster furniture all the time and I used to love to go to the store to watch sometimes! I used to always have custom made furniture when I was a kid. I had the greatest purple bedspread and matching curtains with flowers and a matching purple headboard! It was the most beautiful room and my Grandfather and Father made it just for me! I guess I inherited the decorating gene because I am always redoing furniture, except I don't know how to re-upholster! Can't wait to hear how your chairs came out!

Morning Gerty, It's a much more sensible idea than buying new chairs and will liven the place up nicely. Being a total technophobe myself I wouldn't attempt to reupholster anything myself but if you're that way inclined you should try and take a peek at how he does it then you can do it yourself next time Hope you have a nice trip away.

I can, with concentration, do the outside part, It is just that the springs have gone too far for me to deal with.

I, too, am truly excited for you! What a thrill it will be to have those chairs finally done, and gracing your home! My son and I have a boat, which truly needed re-upholstering...so like you, I shopped here, in B.C., and the material I needed "sunbrella" was about $40.00 a yard...OUCH (and I needed 17 yards)! I went on line, and found it in the U.S. (a heavier weight-better) for $12.99 a yard! Unbelievable! So, now whilst re-cooperating, I am getting the upholstery done & making a new convertible top! And feeling smug for all the money saved. It truly does pay, to research on line, doesn't it....and you get such a wonderful choice, rather that be limited to what's available at your local upholstery shop! Kudos to you...my dear....and I truly, truly hope you enjoy your "getaway"! Cheers!

I am not patient enough to do a good job on the upholstery. I have done a little. I especially cannot retie coiled springs or pull tight the jute strapping in the bottom. I like refinishing wood and I can do a really nice job on those things. You seem to be a woman of many talents.

Nary the talent, my dear....all is fraught out of necessity! Plus I think with patience we can learn to do a lot of things, and truly find them enjoyable. I guess you would more than likely call me cheap, than talented! I truly cannot afford to have this kind of work done by some-one else, even tho' I respect them & their talents. Any time that you attach the word Marine...to anything..the price goes up ten-fold! But I, like you, really enjoy refinishing furniture, and I have many pieces that I have slowly refinished...and it is truly rewarding! Hope your getaway is soon...and you will have to tell us all about it! Have a rainbow day...& Cheers!

Sounds exciting enough. When they are finished you will have the best of both worlds, something new and yet something treasured from the past.

When I talked about getting rid of them hubby said they deserve better than that. So we decided on the upholstery. That is my online earnings paying for them.

Oh does that sound like fun! You not only get to enjoy a little time away, but you'll have something to show for it too...2 new chairs to bring back. I think it's great to refurbish older furniture because it's made so much more sturdier than what you get today. The same goes for alot of the couches, and cars, and tables, and stoves, and refrigerators, etc., and the list can go on and on, haha. Well, you have fun and make sure you take a picture for everyone to see! We'll be waiting!

I am up to step two. He needs to tell me how much fabric to buy. My swatches arrived in the mail and we picked a fabric. I have enough money in PayPal already to cover it.

That is a good idea. I know they will look great. I love to refinish old furniture myself. It helps to keep furniture that you have for keepsake and remembrance looking nice. I lived with my grandmother when I was young she had a lot of things I wished I could have kept but when I was a teenager I moved, then when she passed her children got rid of all the things without letting us know. She had an old bed that was made out of iron I would love to have an old cedar chest that I wished I had. And other things too. Those things meant a lot to her. Please take pictures.

He is booked up until the end of the year. Meanwhile, I have fourteen yards of a damask fabric in my living room. I just ordered more swatches for some other furniture.

Are you at all worried about having a friend do the work for you? I only ask because I have seen a lot of things go south lately because a friend or family member did the work. Best of luck on the chairs, a good set is hard to find!

Sounds like a really useful friend to have. What will you be doing for them if they re-upholster the chairs for you? I always like being able to barter skills with friends, much nicer than using money.

It is so convenient to get everything done with the aid of the internet. Business transactions is becoming easier as everything is done at the touch of a button and shopping these days has become more comfortable now and with many choices to select from the net.

You get triple benefits out of this--you are recycling, you are keeping two chairs that you love, and you're seeing your friend! Will you take some before and after pictures of the chairs so we can see the difference?

To a good upholsterer, the value of furniture is less about the icing (the padding and fabric) and more about what's underneath it. They can find stuff at garage sales and even the dump, that you and I would cringe at. The first thing they do is strip it down to the framework...that's the value of the piece. Good 'bones', good value. To have a chair with mahogany underneath is rare and good for you to see the value of renewing it! Since a friend of a friend is a friend, when you're done with him, ship him south to Oklahoma...lol.
