Do you use public transportation? What are your reasons for using (or not using)

Howdy!
I ride the public busses in the city where I live because: 1. I have no car. 2. It is cheaper than paying for gasoline if I did have a car. 3. It is better for the environment. 4. I get to meet and interact with interesting people while traveling to and from my destinations.
What are your thoughts on the subject?

I ride the bus here. I don't have a car and I don't have a drivers license. I would probably still ride the bus if I did have a license!

No I don't...mostly because there is no public transportation where I live...there is about 200 people living in this area...even the the nearby town where I work has no public transportation and they have about 14,000 people..If you don't have a car here you are sunk...and better if you have 4 wheel drive...

Too bad there is no other way to get around for you....but it's nice to live in a smaller community, too!

i have my own car, but i take the public transport when i go to work because of the increasing gasoline prices. my fuel expenses practically doubled, so i had to make some drastic adjustments, such as taking the public transport, even if it gets me nauseaus.

Using individual automobiles to commute is bad in many ways...the price of fuel stops many from doing so.

Thanks for your response - but please "respond" rather than comment.
I don't have to travel at "peak" hours, fortunately, and I do a lot of walking too.

If I had to use public transport then I prefer railways than the buses because buses take too much time to reach the destinationas compared to railways. Besides, you don't have to inhale smoke of the vehicles when you travel by railways. Its much more comfortable for me.

I personally don't mind taking public transportation, but having my own vehicle transporting children to school, sports events, and grocery shopping is so much easier and more convenient. My husband hates taking buses and trolleys because of the different people that do ride them, it not only gives him a joke for the day, but stresses him out.

Personal transport certainly has its advantages in many situations...commuting (where public systems are available and reasonably convenient) just isn't one of them in my opinion.

I do not, because around here most people have cars. I would be leary of it only because I am not used to it.

No, I don't use public transportation unless I'm traveling in foreign countries. Public transportation in Iceland is a joke. I tried taking the bus to work a few times last year but it always took such a long time and the bus was alwasy late.
We don't have trains in Iceland so that is not an option for us.
When I travel to foreign countries I prefer public transportation rather than rentin a car as I'm usually not very familiar with the area and I tend to get lost lol.

Trains would be tough to keep in operation in such a geologically active place as Iceland, probably! Too bad you have a bus system of dis-satisfaction!

I waited forever to get my permit and now I have to wait a year before I can get my license. I hate riding the bus but it is better then getting in trouble for driving illegally. I will continue riding th bus for 1 more month. Once I get my license you will never see me on the bus again.

I use public transport and i find it fun and a great way to meet new people, I dont drive i suffer from seizures and until they have that under control i cant behind the wheel of a car. I do find that having to use public transport really puts limitations on what i can do and where i can go and of course i cant go out late because then i cant get home and all the rest of it but public transport is ok i spose, but i am lucky in a way my faince drives and when he isnt working if i need to go anywhere he will take me!

That is one of the drawbacks to most public systems..they don't run 24/7!!

I don't use public transport. Because where i work is really hard to get to via public transport. For something that takes me 30mins to drive to and is mostly highway driving (so more fuel economical), I would have to catch a bus, then a train, a small walk, then another bus to get to work. Just not worth it to me both in time and effort involved

It's too bad that communities weren't planned around a public transport system in the first place.....it just isn't efficient for some of us....

I dont have a car ... and no means to pay for a new one, but I just got a new job! I use the light rail system recently put into Minneapolis, Minnesota ... and it's probably the greatest thing to happen here. I carpool with my mother up to the cities, and take the train one stop past the airport to work. I love the light rail!

Good to hear that at least one city's light rail system is up and running well!
