I am very sad to say that I am forced to work today. I am going through a busy work schedule, running fast to meet tight deadlines. I amd depressed and demotivated because my company didn't give a hike in salary for the last two years for employees because of recession, but we are working hard. I think many companies are making use of the name 'recession' to deny salary hikes for their employees regardless of the fact that they are affected by recession or not. What about your work?

daliaj, I think you must be working in a software/I.T company which is the only place where all these kind of non sense occurs. They make us to work like a donkey and give our Salary in Peanuts and that is the Thankless I.T. World which we are crowing about. I too have the same problem with my company. But I have never succumbed to the pressures from my project managers and team lead who persistently asks me to come on Sundays for which I would be finding N number of reasons to stay at home

Yes, you guessed right. I work for an IT company and these kind of issues take place mostly with IT companies. The sad part is managers force us to come to office during weekends and finish work, but they won't come. Their job is to get work from us. They just sit at home and send N number of emails saying 'do this' and 'do that'. It is irritating. I would have worked happily if the company would have motivated me with at least a small salary hike. I thik I deserve it after giving a lot of valuable work to the company for 2.5 years.

Hey, Oh well, that isn't good. But you should try and not be demotivated. I know that you are going through a busy work schedule, running fast to meet tight deadlines, but try and cheer yourself up somehow. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

Thanks for your motivating comments. I know that there are lots of people who are unemployed and seriously trying to get a job. So, I should thank god even though I am forced to work on weekends without an extra pay. Thanks for boosting me up. Happy mylotting.

hello daliaj, when i was still on day shift - 8:00am to 5:30pm, i used to have saturdays and sundays as my rest days. but now that i am on shifting, my restday depends on my superior. i seldom got sunday as my restday but it's just fine with me for i don't need to file a leave when i need to follow-up something in the bank and other private and government offices. we also have no increase last year for as you have said, because of recession much as we wanted to. for me, it's just fine not to have an increase for what's matter is that i still have a job. much better than have no work at all.

sorry to hear about your 'working' sunday.. i do agree that some companies are using 'recession' as an excuse for salary-freeze, or termination of allowances/benefits.. but fortunately i work in a department, where i can see how bad the recession has affected us, and therefore could 'understand and accept' some of the drastic 'cost saving' measures that had to be taken, which included my own 'salary-freeze'.. but i could also see that business is 'picking up' and improving.. so hopefully, the company could show their 'appreciation' when the time comes...

Yes, you are right. We had a tough time when we used to sit idle without and used to spend hours in caffeteria. Now, I am also watching that the business is picking and luckily we have lots of projects in the pipleline also. So, normally employees who are haven't got a salary hike for more than two and half years will expect their bonus and apprisal. Thanks for the response.

daliaj oh please just be glad you have a job. I am retired for a long while but my poor son is still out of work after having been laid off for ages. His job loss affected both of us and put me in this place I dont even want to be. so be thankfull you still have a job and will still be getting paid. I know it sucks not to have a raise but being unemployed is still much worse.

I am sorry Hately. I hope and pray that your son will find a good job soon. Yes, being unemployed is a horrible situation. At least I have a job, but at the same time I am worried that companies are taking advantage of people and make them work as donkeys to earn money. Thanks for the response.

Its very bad that your working on a Sunday. :( And your absolutely right, even if the company is going on well, they are just using this situation (recession) and pressuring the employees with 0% benefit. Our stage is really sad and i have no idea how to proceed with this. When the company is not ready to understand employees needs and only expects us to understand their situation it is really wrong on their side. I think we can't do anything about this other than to pray.

I am sorry to know that you are also in the same phase with me. I felt very sad to come to office being in the horrible situation of not getting a hike in salary for the past two and half years. The prices of commodities which we use in daily life has gone up. When I joined this company before 2 1/2 years I used to pay Rs. 3500/- as rent for my house, now I am paying Rs.9000/- but earning the same salary. That is the sad part of my life. Thanks for the response.

sorry to hear what's happing with you and your job. i work on sundays through choice, cause it makes up in rent money. i milk cows and the farmers are getting paid next to nothing for the milk, even though you pay good dollars in the supermarket. we're still in drought, and it doesn't look like it's going to turn around any time soon. more farmers are getting out, or dropping numbers of cows they milk. the big industry companies don't care about the little guy who does the work for them.

Well, sad to say that's what most companies would do these days. I can say almost 80% pf the companies around the world are like that in the world of today. Bosses are mostly demanding when comes to work performances and tight when comes to salary or company expenditures, all bosses would definitely want to make as much money as possible and they would have their very own tactics to do so. Well, I used to go through that when I was an employee but now that I'm running my own business and although I don't have any employees, I can feel the stress of being the boss and I finally understand the reasons as to why most bosses are demanding when come to work performance, but still, for salary wise I still feels that there are bosses that are just jerks to underpaid their employees.

Hi Daliaj, I can completely understand your position and empathise with you. But you know what there is always some other sorrow that is greater than ours. Let me give you an example: Two of my friends, a couple, got married recently last year. Afetr their marriage they went happily on an International honeymoon. When they returned, the guy was laid off! Do you know what the reason was? That he took some unwarranted leave. Well, he took his stocked up casual leave only. Anyway, he was a senior level manager and used to earn somewhere around 1-1.5 lacs a month. Now he is jobless. His wife had quit just before their wedding. She had had a great career going with a big brand, with a salary of 75k-1 lac a month. After the guy was laid off, she went to work with a very small firm. She now earns somewhere around 20k a month. Sad? Yes. Recession has hit everyone bad. There are no companies that would hire the husband and the wife cant look for another job also. The guy yearns to go to work and is ready to even work for 25k. They even aborted a child as they could not afford it. :( Now, tell me, is not getting a hike bad? Yes it is. But then, not having anything to do for a complete year, having only the four walls of a hosue for companys is worse. Isnt it? :)
