My mother in law said that it's not ethical when you pray that you ask God for money, because money is root for evil.
Last night before my kids went to bed, like usual I ask them to pray. And one of them with said "God please give my mommy a lot of money, so she can buy me the toy from toys r us."
Well that's just coming out from the simple kids' mind.
But that's make me thinking. Is it really unethical to ask God for money. He's the one that gives us life and provide us with our need. And if we really need money, is it really wrong to ask Him?
Of course we are not expecting it suddenly drop from the sky or like tooth fairy leaving money under our pillow. LOL...assuming we all work so hard to put money in our pocket, it might coming from other source that we never knew.

There so many things that we have no business praying for, and we deserve a resounding 'no'. God wants us to be successful in all that we undertake. He has placed every good thing in the world for our prosperity and success. He has given us the brain to use to gain what ever wealth we can garner from His creation. He didn't give us prayer so we could become more self-centered and acquire more things. We should not act like beggars but be like children of God who follows His laws.

Even if we don't mention it in our prayers, God already knows our mind, right ( moreover this discussion, LOL) So why not express it in the prayers. But God knows what we want to use it for. So, if we ask for blessing, in this term is money, pray that you can use it wisely not only for ourselves or beloved ones, but to for His purposes as well (eg. charity, help others, collection, donate for religious activities, etc ). This way we learn not to be greedy as well. And it's a good way to teach children to be responsible for the blessings they receive. Begitu ya IbuEmma?

I know what you are saying that off course whatever we ask as long as it for goods, God always knows.
and what my kids says last night, it's just her speak out her mind..LOL ( kepolosan anak kecil) she's only 6, and she will learn more.
I just wonder the term that ask Him what we need, let say pay the debt, I think there's nothing wrong to ask Him, and He might open up a way ( suddenly get a bonus at your job?).

I don't think money is the root of evil at all. Greedy men use money in order to have the power to do unfair/evil/whathaveyou acts but money itself has no will of its own and therefore cannot be evil.
Considering how much money has become a necessity, I don't see how asking for it is a unethical either. While I wouldn't encourage people to pray simply for the sake of asking money (praying is a means of communication, after all), asking God to give you opportunities (a job, a contest, etcetera) that might provide monetary compensation isn't bad, I think.

Everybody needs money. Theres this phrase that says "money makes the world go round". All of us work hard for money. Could this be right? Maybe, because we can observe it everyday, people are getting into business, work hard just to acquire money. What could be the reason? Simply because they all wanted to live a life of convenience where to they can everything they need and everything they want. But your mother was right, money is also the root of all evil. Because of money some people do the wrong things just to acquire money. With money some people engage in some foolishness because they simply can afford. If a person don't know how to handle money, he/she might fall into this kind of deeds. Its not bad to ask God for money because its part of the blessing he pour unto his people. What we must ask as well, is a guidance on how to utilize money in a proper way.

God is Almighty.... who knows everything... we actually don't need to tell him but it's good to remind him so that he can prioritize things as he is too preoccupied with lots of things. LOL.
By uttering small prayers like these, if it gives you inner strength and hope, then nothing wrong in that.
Moreover we are God's children after all and do children feel ashamed or think of right or wrong while asking anything from their parents?

I think that people prey for different reasons, and that praying for money should not be considered any less moral then preying for health.
people wish to get well, so they can go and earn money to support their families, and what is immoral about that?

I'm not going to say it is right or wrong to ask our Heavenly Father for money, but I'll just elaborate on the belief system a little bit.
I think that if you see yourself doing something that will accumulate money, then it will happen. But it helps if you involve God in this belief. Maybe a little vision where you see yourself visiting loved ones where you could not afford to visit them before. And you include the fact that you believe that God will help you find the way.
I hope this is helpful to you, and to giving advice to your youngster. Good luck to you in the future!

Yes I have too heard that it is wrong to ask God for money in your prayers. I would guess this is because of the fact that there is so much poverty around the world and it is not fair to want more money when we compare ourselves. In addition money does not equal happiness. More important are things like good health.

your kid is very cute. i like his pray.
To me it's very hard to pray any thing, because i was educated in different idea about life. however i'm always interested in other people's beliefs.
life is so amazing. although i have different belief but i still wish many beautiful things can happen in my life and i'm also glad to see other people's wishes in their own ways.
best wishes to you an your kids.

There are many Asians who pray to the deities to ask for money, good health, obedient daughters-in-law and some other requests. Well, that's their belief and we have no right to say that it's wrong because to them, it's their way of life.
If you personally believe that such practices are incorrect, then children have to be taught that when they pray, they want God (or Allah or whatever name you call your God) to come into their lives and guide them. To the Buddhists, it's the same thing. We pay homage to the Buddha because we want Him to be remembered as a good teacher who has taught us to be compassionate and to do good.
The point is: What do people believe in? Asking for money etc., or asking for guidance, calmness etc.?

I guess asking for money from God is no big issue. I have friends in my care groups who had problems paying college fees and they prayed hard for God to show the way. Then the next day, a good Samaritan would put that amount of money in their postbox. A miracle, that is what they tell us all in their prayer meeting.
I think the issue of money cropped out in the Christian faith when Jews worked on the sabbath and traded in the synagogue. So Jesus, said- You can either choose God or money, but not both! I believe this is a relative poser. Man need money to live and God knows that!

Why should it unethical ? WHen all the churches and such ask money in the form of "donations" when it seems rude not to give... and in a life where the need for money pressures us all , and money mean so much and are so essential , then why should it be wrong ? Its just something u need so u can provide for your family. In that case , its something very similar to praying for food if youre hungry , or prayong for the wellbeing of your relatives , since without money , we all know you cant live long

It always good to be true, even a priest told us in his sermon that he also prays for financial support from God since God will understand what your needs are and he always provide for better or for worse right? That's why when i go to sleep i always pray that he may help me from finding money to support my self and my family, and God sends angels to guide us we cannot if the person your talking in front is an angel:) better think about it:)

I think it is okay to ask. It is up to God to either grant it or not. He might give you the guidance to achieve your goal rather than providing the actual item. But you will never know until you ask someone.
