The movie showed how humans may survive an extinction event but in reality it is nearly impossible to drive a space shuttle onto an asteroid and start drilling to plant a nuke bomb and shatter the giant rock.
I remember an event where a comet slammed into Jupiter and created large fireballs and giant black scars on the giant planet's atmosphere. It was good that Jupiter was a gaseous planet so it didn't affect much of the terrain but the impact of the comet left Earth-sized holes on the atmosphere. Imagine that happening here on Earth, maybe our planet will shatter into space dust.

it would certainly shatter into oblivion, we cant withstand comets that size, not even with the technology we have now
