18th Birthday: Quiet or loud affair

September 24, 2009 10:39am CST
My eldest son turns 18 on the 5th October. I offered him the option of having a party at our house with all his friends. But he said to me the other day 'Mum I just want to turn 18 quietly' so we have decided to go for a family barbecue (weather permitting)with a few drinks and I gave him the option of inviting a couple of friends along as well. Me and my partner also plan to take him out for his first legal drink the next day. How did you celebrate your 18th? Did you go all out and have a big party or did you just let it go by quietly? I personally ended up going for a drink with friends at lunchtime as I was at college at the time. Then I went out to the local pub in the evening with my boyfriend at the time.

While all of that sounds fun and exciting..you need to remember that it isn't how you think it should be, but that it is HIS birthday. Carry out his wishes.

My 18th birthday pretty much when by unacknowledged. Except a few happy birthdays from my siblings. Birthdays was not something that was really celebrated in my family growing up. I however have changed that with my kids and let them know I am glad they were born and celebrate each of their birth dates.
