Does your kids school expect too much out of you financially?

My daughter is in pre-k and it seems like everyday they send something home asking us to send money or other things to the school. One day,she brought home 3 different things that needed money or something donated.Don't get me wrong,I love to help and I know the school has to raise money to function, but enough is enough! I am having a hard time financially, and they are constantly asking for money. What do you think? Am I being a bad parent or is this reasonable? Thanks for letting me vent!

I agree with you that school fundraisers have gotten out of hand. The thing to remember is that they are OPTIONAL, even if they school makes you feel they aren't/ I wouldn't mind supporting school fundraisers, but a lot of it is for foods we simply don't indulge in and that I don't thik are healthy. It irritates me when they make kids feel bad and pressure them to get parents to participate. Out PTO even went so far to send out a couple of letters to parents giving an "opt out" option to pay a flat fee to support the school. They made it sound mandatory. I vented quite a bit that day, let me tell you. Why waste school dollars on the paper and photocopies for that and then make parents think they have to pay $40/kid a school year. Pictures are another public school pet peeve of mine. It use to be yearly, not they do it every season! It's ridiculous. Schools is suppose to be about education.

I understand. It is terrible when you feel pressured to particpate when you really can't.Our school is in a nice area and most of the people have money and nice houses. We live in the cheapest apartments around and it's still too expensive, but we don't want our kids being treated differently because they don't have everything that some of the kids have,so we put up a good front by contributing for most school functions, but it really drains the pocket book.Oh,I agree with the school pictures! The first one's they had this year, they sent the payment envelope home the day before they took them and expected us to shell over our money before we even seen them! The cheapest package was $28 and you only got a few pics and no big one's! CRAZY!!!! Thanks for your response!

LOL Having the same problem here. The county we live in is poor, so I'm guessing not much is going to the school system, that's why I figure they're doing so many fundraisers. But, from what I'm seeing/hearing it is a good school system. Anyway, yeah it seems every few days there's a fund raiser for this, and buy this to help the school, there's a field trip send in 12.00. I'm in the same boat, I love to help, but right now financially can't afford very much. So I do the field trips and the other stuff, well sorry can't help myself can't help you lol. No, you're not a bad parent. Our elementary school also does a lot of those-save your can tops, bring in soup labels, or the box tops. I do those whenever I can, so it balances out lol.

I know,I still do many of the fundraisers and field trips, even though I can't afford it.I have even used the last few dollars I had to give to the school.I also do the box tops and campbell's labels.Shouldn't that be enough? Thanks for your response!!
