As you can tell from my headline, I'm furious... furious with some people in here who think they can go round and start bashing people just because they have difficulty expressing the English Language...
Might I remind you goofers that English is a worldwide language and you will find that it is spoken in virtually every country. So technically you "I'm so perfect in English" don't even own the language and so how dare you go around and try to degrade those that genuinely want to perfect this glorious language...
So to all of you non english speaking people in here... you write whatever you want to write, I for one salute you for being courageous enough to come here and express your opinions...
As for you "hollier than thou perfect English speakers" who have a problem with that then seriously sod off.. there is too much hatred in this world just because of petty things like these and this place is the last decent place for peace and harmony of all kinds of people.

Bravo and yes I agree with you. I actually admire many of the people here where English isn't their native language and attempt to get there thoughts across, often in better English than myself..LOL. My ONE beef though are those that decide to write in text messaging and not just those in other countries but English speaking member...not being into text messaging I really have a hard time understanding the "lingo"

I agree! I text message a lot but I do so in English (LOL)! I have a real hard time understanding the SMS 'lingo' as well and I do find it a tad annoying but to each their own I guess... I have no problems with non-English speaking people but admiration for having a go at learning our language.

Oh ho! You saw that other discussion too huh? I saw it but I will not respond to it. I find people that narrow minded too aggravating for words. Actually I expect that discussion will be deleted because mylot has a rule against bashing members because their English isn't that good.

I believe that post was removed am not sure the two other similar discussions were removed but people who bash others for simple things like english language really don't belong on this planet

I haven't seen the discussion you were referring to but nonetheless i agreed with you there. To acknowledge the fact that one person cannot fluently speak English is one thing, to ridicule them for it is another. Whatever! Let us just learn to value our native language. After all, english is just meant as a common ground for all of us to understand each other.

I do agree that its frustrating to communicate with one that doesn't speak or write English very well but it's the bashing and belittling that I can't tolerate..

Here! Here! Someone had to say and I am so glad you did! I have the utmost respect for the non-English speaking people that come here and make an effort to learn the language and improve it by joining in discussions and topics. I had to learn English myself over 35 years ago and I know how difficult it can be. I think that the "holier than thou perfect English speakers" should get off our non-English speaking friends’ backs and give them a fair go, thank you.

I learnt English when I was 19 years old and I didn't learn it in school. I was working as a maid for an Irish lady and she's the one who taught me English. Now ten years later I can speak and write English and I know how hard it is to learn it, so for someone who hasn't got a clue about other people's English language capabilities to come here and start talking rubbish against them really infuriates me

Thank you for welcoming the people just like me, jellymonty :) I am a Filipino and I am not ashamed of admitting that I am not a good English speaker. I am trying real hard to speak good English because I know that this is the way that I will be able to express myself here and it will be a practice for me at the same time. I can see that people here could actually express themselves in English well and I am happy that there are some like me who try too :) Let us be all helpful to one another instead of criticizing others. Take care!

Actually if you didn't mention that you were Filipino I would have thought you're English as it sounds pretty good to me. Well done and keep it up

Thanks. I appreciate people who give allowances and possess a high degree of tolerance for us who are not native English speakers. Actually, mylotting is a good language learning experience for us and I for one, learn a lot. Posting discussions and responding to some help me think clearly in English and I'm pretty sure I'm picking up. It is indeed difficult to put your ideas into words in a language that is not your own considering grammatical and cultural factors, but to try it, we must.
Have a nice day.

My first language isn`t language . i din`t met until now a guy that will say that i didn`t earned my place here just because my english isn`t so good . Hope that i will not find such a guy out here . I study english since i was so young, and i know this language for more than 14 years . So, even if i`m making some mistakes, that`s just because i don`t have anyone to speak with , and it`s normal to forget some words or some grammer things . Anyway , i`m happy aobut your discussion, because thouse that think they are so good and make others feel so bad, may see this discussion and maybe they will try to pass on and maybe they will stop doing that too .

Hi jellymonty, the snob one I presume, it went you know. It was indeed most vile suggesting that second language learners should be negatively rated for not using perfect English.
Now in my limited experience here I have noted that many second language learners have improved their English no end by using this site in a day to day way, and have certainly become more confident in using it, which is all to the good. Many learners actually have a better command of correct spelling than English speakers and rarely confuse things like 'there' and 'their' and get to enjoy using words which they've learnt but don't get to use in everyday usage, indeed for some this maybe the only place they do get to use English at all, so I say to them all keep it coming. They may fall down in grammar to an extent but good grief, anyone who has ever tackled grammar in another language needs a medal.
So in conclusion I would say let us all encourage them and thank goodness I have English as my first language to do this in because believe me if I had to do it in Greek I for one would not be so brave and would probably end up writing everything back to front, as is the way with Greek, although my spelling may be okay.

They were also two similiar discussions that were started which infuriated me to start this one.. but I have seen that too that loads of people are improving their English through this site and I applaud them for that.
ERnglish is not my native language and I suck terribly in spelling and I'm sure I would be all butter fingers if I had to write in a language I'm not familiar with.

I agree that one should not insult anyone for not being able to write in "perfect English". Yet, giving constructive criticism might be of some use. I'm sure those who do not native English speakers, would like to improve their English writing skills. Yet, bashing them will be of no help. We should, however, inquire if some of these non-English speakers would like any help. If so, then let us give it to them free of charge. Here is one pointer. You don't have to be so explicit and eloquent when writing. If you use simple sentences that are straight and to the point, then you will be able to catch your audiences attention much better.

what? is it true that there's people like that.
It's quite disappointing.. :(
i think there's no need to degrade other people's that have difficulty in english.
People can improving and we should help them rather than to make them feel worse.

I think that people should be encouraged to write and participate in forums even if their english is not too good. After all any type of english is understandable enough, so I don't see why anyone would snub someone who can't quite write perfectly. Forums are a place for people to socialise and be nice, right....
Go for it, and don't be scared to express yourselves in any way you please.

Yes it was inspired partly by that and two other similar discussions too.. Misunderstanding is probably the main reason why this world is such in a mess.

Jelly,
English has only 500 words from the Anglo-Germanic roots. Today's English is not even owned by the people in the UK. Much of the words are adopted, adapted, borrowed or even on a 'forever loan' from other countries and cultures. Most 'food and art' words come from across the Channel. A splattering of words came from Germany, some from the Vikings. Believe me, a lot of words came from India and China as well.
Even today, no one except for a small coterie of people in the Royal house, the courts and in academia speaks so called 'Queen's English'. In English teaching, there are more non-native English TESOL teachers than native English teachers. English as spoken in many places take the nuances of the local culture to create versions of geographical English from Manglish in Malaysia to Singlish in Singapore and Chinglish in China.
I am not supporting your verbal outburst against those who belittle poor English writers. I believe by writing on MyLot and by reading the postings here, they can improve their English.

If English is spoken in every country, then why do the mexican people who come acrossed our borders, inform us that they can't speak a word of it? Maybe you could also inform me as to the reason that various factories that I frequent for business purposes have a English/Masadonian translater? I have an Egyptian associate, that came to the USA, along with her husband, that didn't understand or speak a word of English. They had to take night classes, to learn the English language. Where were all these people when English was being spoken in their country?
If English is a worldwide language that is spoken in virtually every country, then what is french, itilian, german, macedonian, spanish, greek, etc? Some form of the english language that I'm unaware of?
The USA is a melting pot of every nationality. People come here from all over the world wanting to make America their home. I love that about our country. We take you as you are, with your cultural background, religious beliefs, and your language but,the USA speaks English. We only ask that you try to learn to speak it and understand it, in order to communicate better with you. We don't ask that you master English, or give up your countries' language. We simply ask that you try to learn our language. Faillure to try or,refusal to learn it is being disrespectful to the USA and, all it stands for, along with its citizens.
