It's that time of year again. The time when everyone starts to get the fall/autumn colds. Everyone in my house is sneezing and sniffling. I'm sure it has something to do with the kids being back in school too. Germs are floating around everywhere. Anyone sick with a cold in your household?

Oh I agree with you on the back to school cold season, Shar19. My younger daughter has already had her first cold since starting back and now my older daughter is sick, as of yesterday. She was out with friends and came home early and when I asked why, I heard that dreaded "I don't feel well." UGH! I work from home and try to keep myself healthy since I'm not exposed to as much as those taking public transit and working outside the home... but I generally get sick a couple of times with the "gifts" from my kids LOL I also step up the disinfecting in the house, too, trying to keep things from spreading too much. I hate this time of year LOL

I hope your daughter feels better soon. Have any of your kids had to stay home from school yet from being sick? I'm really dreading this time of year too. It's hard not to catch what our kids get.

Disinfecting the house is a good move.

So far, no, they haven't stayed home. However, my kids are a bit older (younger one is almost 16 and her sister is 19). If they have colds, they won't stay home - they're too worried about what they will miss at school that day (and they've always been like that, even from the time they were young). I'm very conscious, though, of letting them go to school and passing things around. Our school board doesn't advocate them staying home for a common cold but they're definitely asking us to keep them out of the schools if they have the flu or other contagious conditions.

I have a lil bit of a sniffle & so do one of my kids. No big "sick" cold going on here yet thankfully. But you are right when the temps start shifting around from warm to cold & back and forth constantly we all end up with something. Though my Aunt will tell you til she's blue in the face it's all about the germs. Yes I know, BUT it seems to really hit us when the temps start to fluxuate greatly. Really, we've been in the 70's even up to 80 in the past few weeks, today our high is going to be 59! Darn Canadian air mass! (no offense to the canadian's out there ;0) )

You are so right about that. The temperatures going back and forth like crazy don't help one bit.

If you get the symptoms the exact same time every year then it may be allergies. Eat some hot sauce and you'll clear right up.

Tylenol usually helps me too. Try to get some rest and drink a lot of liquids. Don't forget the chicken noodle soup.

Fortunately right at this moment no one is sick although my husband just got over a little but of a cold with a sore throat and sniffles but so far none of the rest of us have caught it. We went to my sons ball game on Saturday and it was chilly as well as it started to rain in the last inning so we were caught in it for a few so I am just hoping that we are lucky enough to not get sick because of it. We are all going to get our flu shots here next week and I am hoping that we will all be able to miss it this year, but it is already cold here so i am sure we are not going to be that lucky.

well, no one in school here, and since the roomie doesn't work in the office any more, I hope to avoid the worst of them, at least until the other roomie who works collecting tolls brings something home

Maybe you should just spray them down with Lysol when they walk in the door.

not so far. i've been lucky this year-although staying away from people has helped. i caretake my mom so except for taking her to the doc and getting her supplies i've been in,so minimal exposure.

I would think staying away from people would help too. Do you ever worry about catching illnesses at the doctor's office? I know I do.

No, but my allergies have been flaring up! I start the day all stuffed up but my nose runs like a waterfall! I take generic Claritin nearly every day, when most of my days during the year are medication free. I love Autumn! "Autumn is a second Spring when every leaf is like a flower" is what I saw on one public board. How true, it's so beautiful! Well worth the colds and allergies!

Claritin is wonderful!! Of course, I get the Walmart generic version and it costs much less than the brand name.

We have had a really good year until the other day and my son came home from school with a barking cough. I think it is post nasal drip that is causing it but I feel bad because it is annoying him and gives him a headache. I have been giving him something to help stop the drip and I think a nice hot, steamy shower will help too.

I'm sorry to hear your son isn't feeling well. This is the time of year when the kids all seems to get sick. A nice hot shower does seem to cure a lot of things doesn't it? It's ashame we can't stay in the shower all day when we're not feeling well.

So this morning I woke up feeling horrible and with the most clogged up sinuses and at first I thought that it was just because of allergies and the fact that I didn't get much sleep, but as the day went on the suspicion of a cold grew. My nose isn't running like mad as it was earlier though I did take a bunch of allergy pills, but I am still feeling weak, worn, heavy and horrible, so I really don't know. I really hope that I am not sick as I cannot afford to miss any school or work, but I guess there's not much I can do if I am. Noone in my household is currently sick, but everyone at school, work and on the bus is, so I've definitely been around it.

My daughter is sick with something. She usually has some type of allergy thing going on in the mornings. This morning she was sneezing, coughing and even throwing up. I'm not sure what she has. I tried to give her Sudafed yesterday, but being 16, she thought she knew better than to take it. Maybe tonight she'll think differently.

Well today, she's got different symptoms. She has a headache and a sore throat. And she's complaining about her stomach aching too. So I kept her home from school. Hopefully it will pass. She doesn't have a fever though. It's pretty odd the symptoms she has. It's like it changes each day. I may have to call her Dr. later this morning because I don't know what to do for her. It sucks though because I still had to come to work for a while.

I live in Kentucky so the weather is hideous down here. One day it is raining and i mean the cold kind. Then the next day it will be warm not hot. Then it will be cold and windy. It is that time of year that the weather man is not knowing what to do with hisself. My husband actually turned on the heat because he was chilly which he is hotter nature than me.

The sneezing, sniffling, and coughing may not be colds but seasonal allergies. There are many things that bloom this time of year as well as the seasonal changes can irritate asthmatic conditions. I'm allergic to Jackaranda trees... those beautiful purple blossoming trees that bloom twice a year, spring & fall. I had to double my allergy medication and still I'm coughing almost constantly. Also fall weather and school means more time indoors exposed to mold spores and indoor toxins which can also bring about similar symptoms. Allergies can trigger sinus and ear infections if fluids can not drain properly. Check with your Dr before taking an over the counter medication.

Funny you should bring that subject up, I am currently fighting a virus! I picked it up from my friend at college. Talk about being wiped out!!! I get out of bed and am up for about a half hour and have to go back to bed for a nap. I have read that most illnesses are brought home by your children, as their immune systems aren't as developed as the adult systems. Plus children aren't as "germ conscious" as adults. Illnesses pass fastest between children...it's kind of like a wild fire. The friend from college had visited her nieces and nephews and picked up the virus- she didn't bother to tell me that the kids were sick, so I ended up with the virus. She's done this to me before and I have had fits at her about it! About all you can do to protect yourself is to have plenty of germicide around to use on your hands and things like Lysol spray to kill the airborne ones. Beyond that pray a LOT!

College is a great place to pickup illnesses. If you keep feeling bad get checked out by a doctor. There are too many things going around. Feel better soon.

It's usually me, evertime there is a change in season, I get a stuffy nose, slight cough. I think it also might be seasonal allergies. I never had this problem when I was a kid. When my kids became old enough for school that's when my sniffles and such began.

I've been sick with a cold/sinuses for about three weeks now. I really hate this time of the year because the weather is changing so frequently that my body is not able to adjust. I'm just now getting back to the point that I feel human and then the weather goes and changes again. Today was actually the first time in a couple of weeks that I have even felt like getting out of the house for a while during the day. I'll be happy when the weather decides to stay one way for a while because then I know that I'll be okay until the spring comes.
