Does this make your blood boil?

What do you do when you see a poster starting discussions that reflect poorly and inacurately on your state/province/country?
For example, last night I read through two VERY long discussions where the poster was stating lies as truth, and fiction as fact. Her relections were not only slanted, they were outright fabrications.
Do you jump in and call her on these lies? Do you walk away and keep the peace? A couple of other posters did attempt to argue her points, and they were shot down pretty damn quick from thoses who obviously didn't believe that her facts were outright lies.
I don't mean where you are unsure of the accuracy of the post; I mean when you are 100% sure the post is a blatant disregard for facts and truths.

Hi malamar,
I know how you feel. I also see red when someone misrepresents the laws and ways of Canada. I did not see this particular discussion but I have encountered a person on Mylot who does this on a regular basis. When I see such a discussion I usually jump in and try to refute any untruths and misrepresentations.
Like You I don't have an issue with Americans either.

Hey there, thanks,
You should try and make it to TO this coming Saturday night. It is the big " Nuit Blache" night= French for White Night. All kinds of places, Art Galleries the Royal Ontario Museum and many more are open from sundown to sunrise on Sunday morning. I went last year and there was a waterfall made from 30 000 plastic water bottles. This year there are some spectacular shows. Check it out on the internet under Nuit Blanche Toronto. There are over 500 artists who will participate.
Have a very nice day.

Hey Lindalinda, can't make it to TO for the big celebration, but oh, does it ever bring back memories for me. Long ago (in a galaxy far away) while I was attending college, I lived in Mississauga...not too far, huh? That seems like so long ago, now looking back, but really, 'twas merely a heartbeat - LOL

Good morning Lindalinda, how are you today? Fortunately (for me at least) this was the only incident I happened across that really upset me. I just don't bother going into or around her discussions anymore. Too many good people here with good discussions - why waste our time on the fabricators, right?
Our hometowns are very near; I am about one and a half hours southwest of you. (Tips hat to TO)
Have yourself a good day, even if it is wet and chilly -

Hi Malamar, I came across a discussion just the other day which made my blood boil totally. The poster had told a tale which was obviously complete fabrication about living in Greece and he basically came out with rascist homphobic sterotyping. I basically commented on what I felt were his warped fantasies and called him out on his rascism and then reported him. I was the only respondent and he hadn't answered any of his previous discussions so there was no potential arguement but it really riled me. Anyway his piece of garbage has now gone.

Hey thea, nice to meet you finally! I have seen many of your posts and respect and enjoy that you seem able to speak your mind and hold true to your beliefs.
I am all calmed down now, and hope that this particular burr in my side will be gone soon also. I just want to reiterate that I love a good debate; I appreciate the view of others; and I am here to learn more of other countries and cultures.
I just didn't like this particular poster representing my country with her mockery and lies, that's all.
Generally, I am a pretty calm person, and can take many things in stride with no problem. This person, however, was the exception.

Thank you for those kind words Malamar and apols for delay and probable typos here, technical problems all day with a pink screen and now trying to type onto a different screen, all a bit strange.
You have every right to be put out if someone insults something you feel strongly about. I poke gentle fun at Greece and its inhabitants but don't take kindly to others spouting homophobic remarks about our men. Anyway I'm sure neither of us lost our tempers but should blame it on our strong reactionary veins. I'd never heard that phrase till yesterday and stole it from an Indian friend on here as he failed to make it copyright.
Anyway if you like hearing about different cultures you should pop into Greek lifestyle which attempts to make a comparison between Greek culture and others, but often gets sidetracked as well.

If I HAVE the facts, I'll post links to them. I'll post a very reasonable argument as to why what the poster has said is inaccurate. If they argue with me, I'll generally walk away.
As to the discussion referred to in the above response, I don't believe the poster's intention was "to get a rise" out of people. It was to get a good discussion going.
Now if I saw a discussion pointedly attacking a friend, that would make my blood boil.

Hi dawn, thanks for the response. It wasn't a matter of trying to get a rise out of others, it was more a matter of intentionally misleading people by posting untruths and sitting back with the "oh poor me" guise.
I have no problem with people honestly needing help or advice. I have a serious problem with those that play the system and lead other astray.

Usually, I'll post a link with the correct info...and if the post is begun by anyone I know to be purposely contentitious, I just leave it alone. I won't feed into or add to the pleasure a trouble maker gets from...well starting trouble lol.

I think some people get their adrenaline rush each day by creating trouble or being contentious. Thank God, they are in the minority :)
No, you're not naieve...just not put together like those types of people, and that is a positive thing :)

Sorry for the delay in getting back here Peaceful. I am too new here to recognize purposely contentitious people - LOL. But, even if I did recognize them, I surely would not understand them!
What purpose could a so called trouble maker have for being here? Color me blonde, but I just don't get it. Such a great place to meet new people, learn new things, have fun and banter; what possible joy could people find with messing with that?
Am I so totally naive that I should be embarrassed?

will make some research to make it factual. i will link it to that post not in such a way as to argue but only to set things straight. besides i do mylotting to relieve me from stress so why would i spend my time being disappointed with it. if the discussion is not just about the flow of life but also informative, then we might as well give them the right one. if people will not believe my point after sharing the real one, i'm not at a loss. ü

Hi
Yes I hear ya! I am not normally one to bother arguing but this is why I have got so involved in the whole health care debate. I have no problem with agreeing to disagree with someone of the opposite view to me. What I object to is the huge misrepresentation of my country , and to being told I don't know what I am talking about when I have in fact lived in both countries concerned and lived under both systems.
And just in general being told things about my own country over here, that people 'know' because 'they read it somewhere' or 'everyone knows that' which are not true, but they are going to stick to what they 'read' despite someone who lived there 30 years telling them different!....lol

That's my point exactly, English. I just had a problem with the misrepresentation of her so called "facts". It appeared stupid to me, but only because I live here, not because I read it online somewhere. But, this is how these untruths persevere and spread from one person to another, isn't it?
Oh well, today is a new day, and I am going to enjoy it

Hi malamar, it depends. If you think it warrants being reported to admin then by all means report it. If not then you could ask them to post a link to back up their "fact". Or you could diplomatically set the record straight and thereby call them a liar. This is what I would do if I was 100% sure they were posting lies.
Some people seem to think it's ok to tell lies here but I'm not one of those people .

I have no problem with our American neighbours, half of my family are Americans. I have problem with the kind, caring people who responded to this poster in good faith. She lied and abused the trust of some really good people. That was what irked me!
I have absolutely no issues with Americans vs. Canadians.

I usualy confront, lol. I get REALLY REALLY riled when this happens. I am a patriot by nature, I love my country, state and town. Here on mylot, it is usualy my country I end up defending, we are probably the most misunderstood nation on earth, despite being the most known and talked about nation on earth. //I have also spent a good deal of time defending my state here, even with people from my own nation, people who just don't understand the culture or way of life up here, it's a bit differetnt than a lot of the country and too many don't seem to understand that, so we are often judged by what the rest of the country lives and experiences.

Thanks xfahctor, I hear what you are saying, I really do. I appreciate the differing opinions of people as much as the next guy. Plus, I truly believe in freedom of speech.
What I objected to was that this post alluded to laws that do not, and have never, existed in the province (or the country, for that matter). What upset me was the large number of responses ridiculing and protesting a law that does not exist! They were taking her at face value so I do understand their responses, inaccuracies and all.
The poster who responded and correctly clarified the misconception, is the one who got negatively jumped on. Oh well, live and learn I guess.
By the way, the motto (or whatever it's called) on your profile page is freakin' hilarious! Have a good day.

That's basically a judgment call only you can make! If your in to confrontations, and willing to risk your star rating then have at it! What would you gain by doing this? Usually people like that don't last long on here, especially if others are already on to her! I myself would just move on, but remember who they are for future reference! LOL! Have at it! tdemex

Hey tdemex, how you doing today? Nah, I don't like confrontations. I do enjoy a good discussion and sometimes even the odd heated debate, but outright conflict is not my cup of tea.
I didn't mean I wanted to start a mini-war or anthing of that sort, I just was peeved by the blatant untruths. Some people, like myself, are here to learn: new things, different cultures, other countries....whatever.
This post peeved me because she was quoting laws that do not exist in my Province or in my Country. It's is not a patriotic thing, you know, more like an idiotic thing. Why lie or stretch the truth (or in this case play the pity card) for a couple of cents?
BTW, thanks for your help yesterday

Sometimes sonmething good comes out of idiocy. About three years ago I was playing pocker with six other people. -All of them barely said nh (for nice hand). One of them suddenly asked if we couldn´t talk of something and told he was canadian and started explaining about his country. I followed his lead talking about mine until a lady said that she had gone to Canada only to find everything expensicve and bad. I pitied her ( isn´t it a waste to go for vacations only to be miserable?), but that was the beginning of a very close friendship between Kent and I. The lady disappeared forever but I found a friend. Before I knew Kent, Canada was for me a great and cold country north of the US. Now I have seen pictures, postcards, I know about many things that have to do with how Kent lives. Probably we should thank theayt lady for our friendship.
Happy posting

Hello marguicha, it would really suck to go on a vacation and have a miserable time. That would be horrible. I would never vacation in a country unless I had researched it first, just to be sure it would be enjoyable for me to visit. Everyone has different tastes in what they enjoy, and I am no exception.
Our winter can be pretty cold, but nothing like the Arctic or anything like that. But winter is only one of our four seasons, and we embrace them all in different ways. Winter is our time for skiing, skating, and snowmobiling, if those are things you like to do.
I think it is fun to learn about other countries and their cultures.

it is really bad reading something that isn't true. one can argue about it but if nobody will believe better not waste time
