Are you scared of darkness?

I just realizeed yesterday that somewhere deep in me there is a fear of darkness. When it becomes dark at night, that is, there's a power cut at night I get all kind of stupid thoughts. I keep wondering how the same thoughts that would make me laugh in broad daylight makes me shudder with fear in the darkness. Have you experienced this? Do you ever get scared of seeing your face in the dark? Funny it may sound but I get terribly scared when I see my face in the dark, my eyes especially look very scary. If any of you have had similar experience, please do share :)

Yea I hate the darkeness I don't like not knowing what is there it's so creepy a spider the size of your whole face could be sitting there hanging in your way but you don't know it's there because it's dark and then next thing you know a spider is wrapped around your face with it's hairy legs and venomous pincers poking you in eye balls. And I love the light way too much to go without it for too long.

Yeah the darkness seems to highlight any other fear that we have. It makes the other fear bloom. Even I love light, it fills me with so much energy. More than ordinary light, I love sunlight, my productivity is really high as long as the sunlight lasts

Good discussion! I'm a little odd when it comes to my feelings for the darkness... I work nights...so on the nights I work I drive in the darkness and really like it. On my nights off I am awake when everyone else is asleep. So I am alone in my house when it is dark out--and usually my mom has the doors and windows open (we have screens that are closed, she just wants the house to cool down during the night)...and I'm not scared of anything. *If I'm watching a scary movie by myself it's a different story but I wont get into that, I'm sure it's a universal thing* But here's the odd thing...while I am not afraid of natural darkness...if there is a power problem and the electricity goes out after sundown, even if I'm not alone--I panic a little. I dont have a panic attack or anything...I dont scream and freak out. My stomach just tightens up, and I close my eyes and sit still....I don't want to be alone so if someone wont stay in a room with me I follow. And I defeniatly need to be one of the people holding a flashlight lol.

Yes yes, I partly identify with the feeling. I dont scream out and all, infact everyone in my family thinks I am very bold and stuff, so to live up to my image I act like I am not at all scared, but the truth is I am, even in the presence of someone. I just feel like turning back and looking, I feel like someone is silently standing behind me and watching me. Huh.. must be the effect of all the horror movies :p

Lol! Even I dont understand the urge of watching these movies inspite of getting so scared! I guess its just human tendency and we enjoy getting scared and scaring ourselves that way. Maybe also because we like to believe in the mystery of supernatural forces.

lol! I watch a lot of scary movies too! I don't know WHY I continue to watch things that I know will upset me...like...my top 3 movie monsters I'm afraid of are zombies, ghosts and vampires...I just watched Lost Tapes: Vampire this morning and it scared the crap out of me! And I knew it would, but that didn't stop me! lol. Maybe it's just the fact that when the electricity cuts out, it's unnatural--and that's when a lot of people die in horror movies...when the lights go out! lol

Not really. But then again I live in a rural area. I have to admit though sometimes if I am out in my yard after dark I feel like I am in a fish bowl...and I cannot see out but people can see in. And I do get spooked around Halloween when I am watching Micheal Myers..but hey gotta have some thrills in life.

When I was a child, I was afraid of the dark. I would go to bed with my light on. When I fell asleep, my mother would come in and turn it off. Now that I'm an adult, I have overcome this fear. There are times every now and then when I hear a strange noise outside and that little girl fear creeps back into my head. Sometimes I turn on the light. Other times I just stare into the darkness. Thank goodness for the daylight when it comes.

Lol! Even I used to sleep with the light on! Slowly slowly I learned to switch off the lights and sleep. And now also when I hear a slight noise I run to switch on the light. Thats why I dont like when there's a power cut at night.

I know what you mean. If the power goes out, I see every imaginary thing that isn't there. Thanks for sharing!

I love darkness my friend. I hate daylight but I'm not a vampire nor a monster in the dark. It's just that for me when the night comes its the time for me to relax myself from the tiring events and jobs which I did during the day. When you are afraid of the dark for me that means you are secured and safe because you are aware of yourself. If you are scared with your own image I guess for me you are just a very imaginative type of person you kept on thinking about things which can scare you.You know what my friend I've been visited by unknown forces almost every year I mean I get to see things which are not supposed to be seen.My third eye is activated when I'm sleeping I'm really scared at first when I was young but eventually I get used to it. You should not be scared of darkness but instead have fear on daytime because during the day there are so many bad things which could happened everyday.

Wow! I have been trying hard to activate my third eye. Or atleast I love the idea of activating my sixth sense and contacting the other world. What have you seen? Why dont u share it? I actually get scared from the idea of seeing something, one side of me tries to activate this energy and the other side during darkness gets scared of any such appearances. You seem to be a blessed soul and I feel more blessed having your post here :)

Oh my God! Is it eally this bad? I thought they would guide us in the right path and help us taking the right decisions :| When I close my eyes and meditate I feel like somebody is disturbing me and doesnt want me there are doesnt want me to meditate. Is it just my imagination? Any such visuals seen with closed eye is imagination? And anything supernatural seen with open eyes is not imagination? Is is like this or something else?

I really can relate to what you're saying. I don't really feel comfortable alone, when I go to sleep, which is one reason why I'm glad I'm living with my fiance. I don't know why I feel really insecure with sleeping alone or anything like that. But it's just the way that it's been for a while.

I would consider myself to be one of those who fear the dark as well. Although I am bale to sleep in the dark, there are certain circumstances that I am scared to be in the dark. Usually, when I am all alone, I fear the most and my thoughts just run wild making me thing of the most horrible things that could happen. I am overcoming it slowly nowadays since I am already 20 and it would be embarrassing to be acting like that.

in the past, when as a child in the countryside, i did scare the darkness. but now, i seldom watch the honor movies, so i dont scare of the darkness any more. after all, there is always a group living in the building when in the city.

I remembered when I was smaller. I was just like you. I lived where there weren't any electricity. And every time I had to go outside I would run to where I was supposed to go and run back inside. Worse yet I lived in a forested area. Not nice. I remember saying the lord's prayer on countless occasions. Its so funny thinking back. But it is something to be scared of. And if someones sneaks up behind me and go booo! I would get so scared.

I used to afraid of darkness when i was a kid. When i sleep, it's very dark, i even didn't dare to go to wc without turn on the light. That's because i was afraid of ghost, i was afraid it will appeared suddenly in the darkness. But i never see it. Now as the age goes on. I know it is a story of ghost, and i don't afraid of dark that much. But i also don't dare to walk along on the dark street not afraid of ghost but the bad people. And sometimes i also afraid of ghost when somebody talk about the ghost. How about you? Have a good night and happy mylot.

i always say (more to sound like bragging) to my friends that i am never afraid of the dark. but i realized that they were shallow words. i now shudder with just the thought of myself being alone in the bathroom, or in my bedroom. it is just very recently that we were told by my daughter's classmate who came to the house that she is seeing ghosts in the house (she has a third eye and is the subject of some of my discussions, here). she told my daughter that ghosts abound in dark and damp places. that is why i always feel goosebumps on my arms when i dare to enter a dark room because of this thought.

Same here, and I still brag the same way in front of family and friends. Infact when they get scared they pull me along like their strength. But deep down only I know how scared I am. Ever since I have moved into this new house I always feel the presence of someone standing behind me and looking. I dunno if its just a psychological problem or there really is something. I hear tinkling sounds as well from different corners of the room. I used to get scared of the bathroom even before knowing that ghosts exist in damp places! :o this is the first time I heard it but I have always been very scared in the bathroom.

I think the fear of darkness is inherent in human beings. Personally, I get scared too when it goes all dark. I am especially scared if there are those strange noises of insects and other animals outside and if I am totally alone in the house. I also start imagining if something or someone could be around the corner, etc. My ear sensitivity definitely gets heightened and I pick up the smallest of sounds - that definitely freaks me out sometimes!!!

Very well said! s darkness definitely heightens the sensitivity of the ears! Never realized it consciously until now. Even I am very scared of insects, rodents etc. The world would be really a nice place without insects :|

anweshadas, lol. I believe you have long hair as what your profile picture is showing. Having that kind of long tresses and looking at yourself in the mirror in darkness, don't say you, I'll be scared the heck out of me too! I always think girls with long hair shouldn't walk around at night with the hair flowing in the air. It's just plain scary. Back to your question. No, I am not afraid of the dark. :)

LOL! Now I have longer hair than what the profile shows :p Omg now I will be even more scared thanks to your idea! Lol! :p Hmmm good for you that you are not scared. I always prefer company of people who are not scared of dark for the support.

Something in the brain searches for light. Even when I think I have my apartment totally dark, my brain is somehow able to use something small (like the little power lights from my always-on Internet-connection with COX Com.) to 'illuminate' the whole room. I'm 'old enough' to know that there are no ghosts or monsters out there to 'get me,' but I still have a fear (something I should be equally afraid of in the light) that only comes up in the dark---what I would do if the apartment building collapsed and I was somehow still alive (Although the recent earthquake we had should allay my fears there---it was nothing geography-warping, but there was absolutely no structure-damage in my apartment!)
