Its an abbreviation used online or during text messages meaning lots of laughs or laugh out loud. It is not a word in itself but an abbreviation for a short statement. When I first got online I use to see all those little things and be like what in the world are they talking about. LOL Hope this helps.

If a 29 year old young American is not able to understand what, LOL means, initially.Just think of the plight of a 50 year old Indian.LOL.
Thanks for the response.

laughing out loud is its full form. When you hear a joke or a material worth loud laughing then we use this abbreviation. Its very useful in chatting and to express the feelings too.

hi rameshjumaar57 hi well do not use lol in serious discussions
because it stands for laugh out loud so use it where you are making a humorous or funny remark for emphasis.it does mean to laugh out loud. you just use the first letter of laugh and out and
loud. does this now make sense to you I hope?

I am certainly not going to use it in my everyday correspondence. I do not know whether the people with whom I am moving will be able to understand this.
Of course in the internet, I will certainly use it in humorous discussions. Thanks for the response.

it's not meant to be in a sentence - it is "internet" or "text" speak i.e. you use it when you are in a chat room or texting or IM'ing.
To use it in a sentence would be to reference these types of actions. I.E. "When I told him my situation, he replied "LOL". OR, "I am annoyed by people who can't speak naturally, but refer to acronyms such as "LOL" when they tell me their laughing"
