This should not have happened...

But it did. I was a total idiot, and I am (almost) so hoping I get a ticket in the mail for this. One day last week, I'm driving to work, just bee-boppin' along. Minding my own business, you know... Driving down the road. And all of a sudden, these people are honking their horns at me and this one lady is about hanging out her car waving her fist and yelling at me. And I'm just like "What is THEIR problem???" When I realize I have just driven right by a school bus picking up kids for school. OH MY GOSH!! I am SOOO stupid! I drive the same way every day to work, and I KNOW they pick up kids all over this street. I am usually the one getting mad at people who blow by the school buses without stopping. I mean, how hard it is to see the flashing lights? The 2 red STOP signs sticking out the side of the bus. The big yellow arm that sticks out of the side also... Well, apparently, it was too hard for me to see that morning. I have no clue what was on my mind, but it wasn't my driving. I am so glad that they only pick up kids from the one side of the street. I would hate to think that my negligence could have hurt someone. Please just agree with me that I was a total idiot that day. I don't need to hear "Hey, it can happen to any of us" kinda things. I was wrong, I know it.

Hi reinydawn, I know you don't want to hear it, but it really can happen to anyone. In fact it happened to my husband and I a few years ago. He'd been driving when we saw the school bus. The red lights came on and the stop sign flipped out, but for some reason we drove on by. Fortunately like you, no kids were crossing the road. Otherwise it could have turned out really bad. Well, just try to learn from this experience and not let it happen again. Because next time you may not be so lucky. Happy mylotting and drive safe!

I have been paying to much more attention lately. It's like sometimes you just know where you're going and you're on auto-pilot....

Okay, you're an idiot! Join the club. Those of us who are deep in thought and run that red light, turn the wrong way up a one way street, turn left from the right hand lane. You have joined the throngs of people who have smacked their palms to their foreheads and said "What in the hell was I doing????" We're those people who can lose things in our own hands, set something down and have it disappear without a trace, drive 20 miles before they realize that their tire is flat, and go by a school bus with it's flaps out. Now that you've gotten it out of your system, pay more attention and remember WHY they paint school buses that horrible yellow color; to attract attention to the fact that it is a school bus. If it makes you feel any better, we have a neighbor who has done the same thing, plus he doesn't recognize stop signs either. He also was riding his motorcycle without a helmet and got stopped by a highway patrol man. The cop didn't give the man a ticket as long as he got off the FREEWAY and allowed my BF to drive him home to get his helmet. The idiot got off the freeway and drove home anyway. It took a couple of hours for us to locate him...with my BF being stuck waiting at the place that the man was supposed to park his motorcycle. It is funny because my BF and the guy ride together every Wednesday, and I get informed the number of stop signs that the neighbor ran! Now, just remember, as one of the other lotters stated; you could be in deep deep poop if you do it again and hit a child. Besides the point that you couldn't really live with yourself if you did hurt a child that way. Just keep it in mind now that if it is yellow and flashing it ISN'T A MAN IN A RAIN COAT TRYING TO GET YOUR ATTENTION SO HE CAN SHOW YOU HIS!!!! It's a school bus!

Thanks for the chuckle :) I have been paying much more attention now. I let the "autopilot" sit in the back seat instead of driving. It's so hard when we drive the same route every day, know exactly where to go... Then one day something different happens and we totally lose control.

You just illustrated how easy it is for anyone to be distracted while driving. Yes, it was wrong, and that is like the one day I nearly ran through a crosswalk last spring, with a crossing guard getting ready to step out. I have readjusted my route, so that even if I am blinded by the sun, I will not do that again. If bee boppin to music is that distracting, then cell phones could be very deadly.

I've come to realize it was my auto-pilot driving that day. I've since fired him, and do my own driving - paying attention the whole way!

Well, I'm not going to call you an idiot. That's what all those other people were yelling when they were honking and waving at you. You must have really been on another planet that day, since the honking and waving didn't wake you up immediately to what you were doing. I'm really critical of idiot drivers, so I'm really embarrassed when I do something dumb while driving.

Oh, I'm pretty critical of other drivers too - I have no idea how some people manage to get a license. That's another reason I felt so horrible when I drove right by. I guess I'm not perfect after all :-(

reinydawn I do agree with you,you should always have your mind and your eyes on the road and on everything around you including the school bus. if you had hit a child, you would now be feeling really awful and probably be in prison. so now you know what you must be more careful of and act accordingly.

It was wrong to do yes...but it CAN happen to anyone. Luckily it didnt have worse consequences than a possible ticket. I've been ACCUSED of not stopping when a bus was flashing its lights. It actually really made me mad when the woman called me and accused me of doing it because she described the car that did it and the TIME the event occurred and for one thing i was at work for over an hour and no where near the location (it was a 40 min drive away from where i work i would have had to be over an hour late for work to be at that location at that time!) and i sure as heck dont drive a little orange sunfire. I drive a BLUE neon. And the license plate number she read off while accusing me of this was so not mine. Which i point blank told her. She said she was gonna report the plate and i was like fine do it cause it wasnt me!

Uh huh, you were an idiot all right! A very lucky idiot, I might add. We have all done something that has left us shaking our head in disbelief, it is just that most of us don't publicly admit to it - LOL This is one example of how bad things happen to good people. You can thank your lucky stars that nobody got hurt, and nothing too bad happened. Live and learn, like we all do. Driving is a privilege, not a right. However, we all get brain-clutter and make some really stupid mistakes. It doesn't mean we are bad people, it only means we should be wise enough to learn from those mistakes. Don't hold your breath too long, you may still get a ticket. Mine came almost three months later

So far, I haven't gotten anything in the mail, so I'm hoping I'm in the clear. Of course if I do get a ticket, I will gladly pay it!

...Hi reinydawn, It is very good that nothing worse happened. What I think is that this was or should be a wake up call to you, as it seems from what you have said, that you tend to daydream while you are driving. That is serious business, because the next time you are not paying attention, someone could wind up under your car in a bad state. So use this incident, to make yourself pay close attention whenever you get in your car. A car is or can be a lethal weapon, and you have to be in full control, not lost in a daydream. Take care always.

see, I think maybe it would be good idea that people ask themselves ocassionally that:"what's the most important thing right now?", then he would focus on what he is doing right now, if you ask youself this question when you are driving, then nothing of course is more important than driving saftly! I think it is undeniable that most people think more about the past and the future, they think about the past, and say, what if I ... what if I... , people think about the future, I wanna be... my business will become... but seldom think about current situation. I think the most important thing is today, is right now, is currently. since today is the result of yesterday, if today is not good, you will have to do something to change it, today is the base of tomorrow, if you want tomorrow to be better, you will have to live through today well... Just write some feeling after reading your discussion, it is a good discussion!
