using the reverse psychology sometimes do the job man. in a casual conversation, try to ask him if you have a bad breath and how you and other people are conscious with it. tell him what people think of someone who had bad breath. for us Filipino's "Bad Breath" is such a big issue of personal hygiene. you said that he's an influential person on your company,a person of good education and power then maybe he'll get the idea.

I think if you are that much of a friend even though they are your new friend you should tell them as someone may think it is you who has the bad smell.I would say have you had garlic as i am sure that is what i can smell on your breathe and then another time say you can smell onions and keep saying things like that then perhaps they will get the hint without you saying anything else.Good luck.

Give him a gum! and if he wonder, try whispering and say, "i think there is something wrong with your breath?" Sometimes, bad breath does not only come from the mouth.. it may also come from the stomach.
