So far my knowledge on the version goes the 'Good News Bible" is the best for all. It is written in the modern English and the illustration are are quite comprehensible.

Once you find a bible you like I would myself get a book called a concordance that allows you to look and cross reference scriptures throughout the Bible. Alot of bible have their own concordance but if yours does not I would recommend getting one to use with the bible you choose to use. It will help you in understanding the bible alot more than just reading it alone.

since i feel the bible is only a guide and mostly made up stories i cant help ya much. i have read several versions of the bible and find it all misleading and selfindulged. but if you want to learn the stories in a more simpler manner watch some of the movies made based on the bible there are some good dipictions in the movies. ie The 10 commandments- There are more easy to find even on the net.
