Contrary to popular belief, swimming is not generally considered an ideal way to lose weight. Unless you are an expert, the movements and strokes are usually less efficient than land-based aerobics. On the plus side, swimming makes an excellent aerobic conditioner, and it has less impact on the body than running or other aerobics.

Swimming is the best exercise for all parts of body and it does reduces weight remarkably. My sister reduced a lot of weight by swimming and I was surprised when I saw her, i mean she was too fat and with swimming she got proper. Also swimming brings freshness to the mind and face and one gets relaxed on swimming.

I am not an exercise expert but as far as I know swimming is one of the best forms of exercise because of it is low impact and less prone to injure the body. Anything that gets the body moving has got to be good for weight loss the way I see it!

I think swimming is a great way to lose weight. I have always got in the best shape when I swam regularly. Swimming tones the body all over and burns a lot of calories. Its also great for the joints as its low impact, jogging etc can really wear the knees etc. Swimming is great as great as the water supports you.

I think that when doing fast swimming a person uses much energy. Therefore he or she will reduce weight. I don't think a person would lose much weight if they just did gentle swimming. I love to travel and snorkeling in a sea with a tide makes me lose a little weight. In swimming pools I see some people training with their swimming. I imagine that they are losing weight as they do their exercise.

Dear friend, It depends how well that person swims and eats. If swimming done well with control diet I could judge that it reduces fat in our body. Also it is considered to be a good exercise. Mostly exercises helps one to keep oneself good in shape.

I think that swimming does reduce weight and it's the best form of exercise as far as I'm aware. I have a pool very close to me however I have not been swimming in years and I really do miss it. It's quite expensive as well. I used to swim on a regular basis many years ago, about three to four times per week and I really enjoyed it. Now I restrict myself to cycling and keeping fit within the home. Andrew

In fact it will keep you in shape. I use to swim all the time, when I did I was right in shape, once I stopped swimming I have to say I gained weight. But yes you can loose weight by swimming. In fact its better then running. Even my doctor recommended it to me to lose the 30 pounds I have gained over the past 6 months. So I may start back to swimming again. Since My back is so bad that I cant really do most other activities.

I have to respectfully disagree with some of the people who have mentioned swimming might not make you lose weight because of the gain in muscle. The fact of the matter is fat loss happens faster than muscle gain and much easier. Losing 1 pound of fat is easier than gaining one pound of muscle so you would notice weight loss [fat] during the initial months of this activity. After a few months, muscle gain starts to pick up and the lose in weight might be less [but it will still happen] because of the balance reached between fat loss and muscle gain. Remember any activity that heavily involves your cardiovascular system [as in puts demand on the heart], such as running, swimming, biking ect, has a stronger impact on fat loss than on muscle weight gain.

Yes ofcourse. It is one of the best exercise. Infact, swimming not only helps to reduce the excessive fat but also tends to get your body in shape. I am not a regular swimmer but I would like to do swimming at a regular basis so that I can maintain my body. Swimming alows you to stretch your body which otherwise you won't and so it is a kind of exercise only. 30 minutes of swimming daily and you can see the results in a few weeks

Swimming is exercise...it's better than just sitting around and watching tv, right? Swimming won't necessarily make you LOSE weight...and heres why: *Swimming will develop your arm and leg muscles really well (it'll also help your middle)...and muscle weighs more than fat. So as you build up your muscles, you may not LOSE weight--but you will look fitter and healthier just the same! And people will defeniatly say that you've lost weight because you'll look like it :)

Hi junior07, actually swimming could either increase or reduce weight, it depends the season, style and training method. For example, if one prefer to swim in winter, he will add weight due to the stimulation of cold water. and swimming fast for short distance may has the same result. so if you want to reduce weight, i suggest that you choose back-style or free-style, train for long distance, such as 500 meters, and in warm water, through this way you will get your weight reduced.
