How to Unistall an OS using itself?

You got my question right? I want to uninstall Vista while using commands from Vista itself. Not possible? Actually the thought came to my mind while answering a post here. My story: I wanted to install XP on my pc which was having problems with Vista. I deleted some registry files(I really like it sometimes!) and lo, Vista will not start. Well, I wanted XP anyway. Go ahead! Now XP tells me it can't be installed, Vista is bullying it. What to do now? I used all XP CDs I could get, to no avail. And then there it was, XP Awesome! It coolly went ahead like Vista was nothing compared to it, installed fast too and I was Happy! Later I found out the CD had a lot of viruses in it as well. What a fun! I loved this all very much. Try it if you dare... what about my initial question??

You can't uninstall an operating system, you can format the PC or upgrade the OS if possible, but it is impossible to uninstall it. Deleting registry keys that you don't even know what are they used for just shows how you are messing with something you don't understand. Solution for your problem is to fresh install the XP or Vista. That means you have to set the boot device to CD/DVD Rom and then insert the Windows installation CD/DVD, follow the instructions and you'll have fresh installation of Windows in no time. Be aware that you will lose all your data! I also have to add that you can't downgrade from Vista to XP, you can upgrade from XP to Vista, from Vista to Windows 7 (OEM versions are already circulating through the torrent trackers), but there is no way to downgrade... I want to say one more thing. I'm an IT student and I know pretty much about PC's, operating systems, programming, etc., but there is one thing I hate the most and that is when unskilled people claim that Vista is slower than XP, much worse than XP, etc. The problem is that initial release of Vista was like that, but after the SP1 and SP2 Vista is good operating system. I've been also beta testing Windows 7 and I have to say that it is the best operating system Microsoft has ever made. P.S. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't my intention to attack you, but I'm mad when people claim something they have heard and not from their experience... Happy mylotting and take care!

Well I don't know how to respond to it You have asked me to not get hurt....LOL Well, I would like to say I'm a Computer student and have many friends from IT as well.. And I do research before doing just anything. Why I said I have become fearless is that there was one time when I was afraid of the line don't play with registries! That's true, but I was not a Comp student back then. What I like about XP and Windows 7 is that they have some sympathy with older machines (it's from my experience, mind you!) while if Vista needs 1GB then it does.. I will not go further but my friends do have Vistas and 2-4 GB RAMs and still they face speed problem.. As for the confusion created, so far no one is supporting to play with registry.. It was just a question and fortunately everyone has got it right: YOU CAN'T Happy mylotting to you all! :) @Fadolf please refrain from instructing how to install OS unless asked, that sometimes hits the pride pretty hard just joking.... ;)

I found this to be a really mixed up discussion and a one that would confuse too many people. Playing with registry files is a sure way to mess up your OS if you don't have the expertise to do so. Reformatting a computer can do wonders, especially if you have low RAM and it's been a few years since OS was installed. I recently helped someone reformat their PC from Vista home Basic back to XP; it was really slow and the biggest problem was that the PC only had 512mb RAM. Why, I don't know. Vista performs well with 1GB and 2GB is plenty. Anyway, they were amazed with how fast their PC was after I installed XP. Windows 7 will be the OS of choice when it goes on the market, no doubt. A lot of people will assume they can upgrade their old computers to 7 but that might not work. You can go to the Microsoft website and download a small file that will scan your computer to see if your PC is compatible with 7, you can do the same with Vista as well. Anyway, the scan will tell you if you're good to go or what your PC is lacking. Best advice for people who have little computer knowledge is to at least do some online research about issues you have with your PC, there's a lot of forums that have easy reading answers. Next best advice is to backup all your important data like photos, music and docs; an external hard drive is really good for that because you can plug it into another computer. It's good to have an IT student as a friend on Mylot as well...lol.

Wow ! Nice to hear all your adventures... just like you, I too like to do such things with my PC ... I guess Vista did not let you install XP because XP is a version of windows that is lower than Vista. If you are installing XP over Vista, you are downgrading your PC. which I guess windows doesn't want you to (now I really don't know why...) XP awesome ??? Never heard of it. Must be some multithreaded OS... I once installed Black XP (I told you i love fooling around with things too !) Ok now about your question. I read on MS's site that if you have 2 or more operating systems installed, you can uninstall one of them by simply booting into the other, going into the directory in which the other windows is installed and deleting the "windows" directory ! So if you wanna uninstall Vista using Vista, then install another Vista and delete the windows directory of the old Vista ! Thats what I can suggest friend ! Take care...

I liked you response:) Especially installing another Vista to uninstall Vista so that I have only Vista as my OS! LOL I didn't like Awesome much as Bariski (the creator) has strong hold on it and I couldn't make it 'personal'. I won't say he made a faulty OS but at least my CD had loads of viruses which gave me loads of fun no doubt. I once tried to install Black Edition but the installer I downloaded proved to be a 'ty ty fiss' if you understand what I mean I left it alone.. Thank you for fresh response, I had got somewhat tensed!

Well friend if you have upgraded Windows Vista on already Windows Xp then you can restore back your Windows Xp. But if you have removed Windows Xp and then installed Vista then you have to install Windows Xp freshly. Please do read the below two articles and in those articles there are procedures to unintall Vista. So, try it.. links are given below:http://www.windowsvista.windowsreinstall.com/uninstall/index.htm If you want to downgrade Vista to Windows Xp please do read the below link:http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/install-windows-xp-on-your-pre-installed-windows-vista-computer All the best...:)

There is no new feature like Restore in Vista. So, best way is format C: drive and install Windows Xp from scrath.. I when uninstalling Windows 7, the uninstallation was successfully happened but when Windows Xp boot an error use to come and display too was not looking good, so, I formatted and resinstalled Windows Xp.. :)

uhm, unless i am mistaken, i think that most new laptops (and desktops) have a recovery system where you can recover the same OS if you want, just like starting with a fresh computer. There are also some computers that are downgradeable to certain operating systems. Like if you purchase a computer with a vista business, it can be downgradeable to XP pro. They have a recovery disc with it or installed in the pC. Lastly, you can uninstall it because normally, computers are sold with the CD of the OS with it, so just restart you computer, and make sure you put the CD in the CD-rom then, boom, it will start the install/uninstall/repair thingy. If you want to re-install it or put another OS, then just put the CD in and reboot. It will start with the blue screen and installing etc. and if you are worried about viruses, try making multiple partitions, and justi nstall your OS in a separate partition, example Drive D. You can allot just a few GB for it, then another partition for your games and another one for important files. Because if you do this, if one drive gets corrupted, you can just format it and not have to remove and reinstall your OS.;) hope this helps.

Well I didn't know about the downgradable feature. Well thanks for sharing the knowledge My friend got CDs but they had only XP drivers not XP itself while everything related to Vista was there. For me, I have this Super Compaq which has recovery partition, no CD with it and I don't regret anymore the foolish action of formatting that drive...! Thanks for the steps too, Happy myLotting

I don't think there exists such command... We'll see! Hey, having two OS doesn't bring viruses! It may get hard for your disk sometimes (if the configurations are low) but it may come handy too!

Both are the things which work... but that's not the question. I said uninstall an OS using itself.

If you have a dual boot, couldn't you just boot up on one OS and delete the other ? If you have only one, can you just install over that with a new version ?

That is impossible...you can not uninstall an os using itself.. Also you cannot use some serious commands like "format" in the drive which the OS is installed.. Try executing format command in windows in the C drive.

That's right! But you can do with workarounds... Have you seen an OS installing it partially on spot and partially after the reboot??

Actually my friend , for example xp copy the files then after the reboot it installs the files in to the system... thats what your saying..right...? But that is only true for installing only .. If you consider unistalling think how can the os can execute the command if there wont be any os to lead the command ...

I have a suggestion for your future forays into OS annihilation, especially if you want to install a previous version of Windows. Deleting the registry will not work, because a Windows installer will look for certain folders or programs to convince itself that it is safe to install a new OS. The main problem is different Windows has a different 'mark'. The easiest thing to do would be to rename the folder or files. Honestly I do not know how it works with Vista or 7. In the previous versions it was the System folder, or System32, or Desktop. This was the technique I used to reinstall the same Windows over itself, without losing any previous setting. I know I am not actually answering your question, but since you have become fearless, I thought the tip or info may become useful in your future adventures in computer maintenance.

Thank you for answering me:) It's a new way for me and surely it's some knowledge! I had one question though: the technique I used to reinstall the same Windows over itself .... doesn't the setup give an option for it? I thought the upgrade option works as repair if you have XP already installed. Well I am on back-foot now and I don't remember anything LOL Thanks again for acknowledging my fearlessness. I hope no one is going to be misled by my wrongly put discussion. Pray with me...

The later versions do give a chance to repair the already installed OS during the setup. I found out that not all releases or CD compilation give the same options. Probably you will never meet the variant, because there are many out there. The technique I used was for earlier Windows, from 95 to ME. I believe you may find computers using the old versions. As a Computer Student someone may ask you to help repair an old Windows, without changing any settings, and without the need to reinstall other programs. By using the method described, there will be no worry even on drivers previously installed. You would probably gain greater respect for your new prowess. Some people do not want, or cannot afford, to have an upgrade. Therefore they will be very grateful to you. I have done 3.1, 95, 98, ME, and XP.

Hi Hora... thanks for sharing.. I think, your computer must have a new OS, before uninstall the old OS.

Maybe that's the requirement, for downgrading....

I have no idea how to uninstall an OS using itself? Or maybe it is just like another software that has uninstallation option to uninstall itself. I have never tried to uninstall an OS. What I saw in your post is that XP and Vista are Microsoft softwares that could be operated in one OS, is that right?

XP and Vista both are OS themselves. So far I don't think you can use any 'uninstall me' feature in OS as it needs some launch pad to fire uppon, and in this case the OS is itself the launchpad.. confused? Maybe Linux has some feature, they do all those sort of strange things...!

gosh hora! u really had joy ride hann!! @ topic, u can dual boot ur OS, for that , u need first install older version of the OS (XP) later once installed XP, u can install Vista or 7, by choosing a fresh installation on another drive. Make sure not to use OS which have been modified. Like windows longhorn, xp music edition or hell edition , these comes filled wid viruses and spywares. Im using a Virtual Box software, simple and does the job easily of using 2 OS's , if dont like to use then just delete the Virtual drive file. How cool is that ?! cheers

Replacing Vista by XP is not an easy job... Of course we can install XP then VIsta but what about reverse? Well I am not asking that question actually, ;) Sometimes I love viruses, that's when I have nothing on my PC which I'll miss later... And yeah, virtual OS are really good! I tried and installed Win98, XP, and many of linux systems; don't have image for Vista but it couldn't install Windows7 Which s/w are you using?
