A colleague of mine is considering buying his 7 year old a mobile phone for Christmas. I think that's very young, but he feels strongly about it and says it is for the kids safety. What do you think? How old should a kid be?

i think 7-year-olds are too young to have their own cellphones. it is never safe for them to handle it. in our place, cellphones are a "hot" item for robbers and snatchers. there have been instances where robberies in jeepneys usually involve cellphones. buying a 7-year old kid a cellphone for his safety would only, in the end, put him in jeopardy and danger. generally, children don't think about these things and no matter how we instruct them to avoid using it in public, that is never a guarantee that they would do that.

I would not allow my 7 year old to own a mobile phone!! I think its ludicrous as when would this 7 year old be using this mobile phone??? through the day you couldnt ring him as hed be at school, then afterwards he shouldnt be going anywhere further than his front street! My 5 year old has asked for a laptop for xmas and after a long debate with his dad we have decided to get him one soley for school and learning and will be child protecting it to the hills!!! I think the only reason ive allowed my son his own laptop for xmas is because i work from my computer and im sick of having to give it up for a half an hour on a nightime for schoolwork!!! But no i would defo not give him a mobile till he was at least straying away from home where id want to check up on him

Hi taraelocin,
Buying a handphone for 7 years old kid, that is too young for him to hold a handphone.
From my point of view, the best time to give a kid a handphone is when he has reached his high school around 15 years old.At least , he is more mature in taking care his own stuffs and getting to know things happened around him better.
Giving a handphone to a small kid will just wasted money,he might not know how to takecare of his handphone and it gets easily lost.

i don't think age is quite as important as the maturity of the child in question. if the kid is mature enough to understand the importance of a cellular phone, and the parent is willing to pay the bill every month, i think this is fine! if the kid is irresponsible, loses things often, and does not understand the importance of the phone, then it is best to wait.

i think that a kid, before 13 years, should not own a mobile phone. A child can't know how to use it, and the major part of them use in in a wrong way, I think a mobile phone it's useful to contact someone when we need something, or for work or to talk whit familiars. It's not a "game boy"

Kids are getting cell phones way too early these days! I didn't get my cell phone until I was entering high school, and that was only because I needed a phone to call someone to pick me up after practice. I know many, many 6-12 year olds that have cell phones! What in the WORLD do they need cell phones for?!
