Hi friends! Whenever we see fresh flowers, we feel happy to see those flowers. I have noticed that some of the flowers like Rosaceae, Bermuda Buttercup, Creeping Phlox, Moss Pink and Modiola caroliniana are beautiful flowers with shining petals. However, what intrigues me is that how come these flowers exactly have five petals in symmetrical order or in the formation of a circle. I wonder what could be the reasons of exactly five petals on these kinds of flowers. Would like to know about your opinion on this issue. Thanks in advance.

Hi deepak, God has created every creation purposely. Regarding the flowers, for some are popular on its fragrance and some are attractive on look, the flowers which are bloom in night is having the white color. I don’t want to explain the reason because everybody knows the reasons and the intention of God. Coming to your question, I don’t the exact answer. If you can find it out from any member please let me know. I too, curious to know the answer.

Hi Sree! Undoubtedly, it is unblemished creation of the Great God and He would have done it purposly. beauty of nature which makes us think about the flowers and their shapes. I did not know that flowers which bloom at night are normally white. Thanks for adding it to my knowledge. So far none of the friends have answered the query or any logical reasoning for five petals, as soon as I come to know of it, I'll let you know. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Hi Chaitra! I also believe that these are wonders of great God and we should enjoy it to the fullest. However, whenever I see five petals in a flower, a question pops in my mind, why five? Cannot it be four or six............LOL! Many thanks for joining us.

Wow! I never had any idea about the names of those beautiful flowers! The alliteration in Bermuda Buttercup and the rhyme in Modiola Caroliniana or the plox or Moss - all goes to show how much beautiful and creative we humans are! Nature is God's creation and even though in some reclusive times I have thought about the patterns of the ripples or the rhythmic moving of the sand on a sea shore or even about the white stripes on black on a zebra, I have had no clue whatsoever as to the whys of the nature! Obviously, God had something on mind while creating the nature. May be, He intentionally wanted us be intrigued indefinitely. Now, I hardly ponder over the patterns of the nature for I would love to watch them just as it is. Being intrigued is good sometimes. Did I say this was an intriguing discussion to respond to!?

Hi Mimpi! Undoubtedly, we go spell bound, whenever we see flowers like Bermuda Buttercup or Caroliniana, these flowers look so enchanting and sparkling that you feel like looking at them. You are right that many such things in nature such as ripples in water or patterns on sand on a sea beach or black and white strips on Zebra always make us think and intrigue us and we grope in dark for answers. It is true that we should keep enjoying the beauty of nature. There is nothing abnormal in getting intrigued by nature sometimes........LOL! Thanks a lot for making the discussion more intriguing.

Deepak! I am an ardent admirer too of nature's marvel .I heard from my mother that right from a very young age, whenever I passed through a garden or park I would look at a beautiful flower, stand and watch it in open mouthed adoration and she had to drag me further. I have not changed still as far as the admiration goes. Such thoughts have not struck me with flowers .I would be so carried away by the beauty or the scent and I would go gaga about the flowers and color and what not! However, I just keep wondering about how symmetrical a corncob is or a pomegranate is .It only shows how mysterious nature is and no wonder poets like Wordsworth identified God with Nature. As far as the reason why there are only five petals and not four I know one reason for sure--to intrigue us as Mimpi pointed out and [ also perhaps for us all to discuss this. However, I think we would be able to get some scientific reason for this too-- I got some information like the following but you can read through this further and I am posting the link here. “Certain plant families generally have a specific number of nominal petals, be it 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 or 12. But just like the 3-leaved clovers can sometimes have 4 leaves, flowers too can have variable number of petals. Thus nominally 6-petalled flowers can sometimes have 5 or 7 or 8, maybe even 9 petals. Most Stonecrops have but 5 petals. Furthermore no plant that is not aquatic has three petals. Flowers possessing five is a very popular number, for they do not need to pack together orderly. But some with five petals do have one peculiar property. Many flowers (but not all) with five petals have asymmetrically shaped petals, rather like propeller blades where the leading edge is of a different shape to the trailing edge. The Periwinkle Family are such flowers; another is some members of the Mallow Family. Soapwort and Bouncing Bett also exhibit this property which seems to be peculiarly restricted to those having 5 petals at 72 degree intervals around a circle. However, not all those which have five petals separated at 72 degrees have this asymmetric characteristic. Some are totally symmetric------ . http://wildflowerfinder.org.uk/Menu2/Petals/Petals_Info/Petals_Info.htm

Hi Kala! It is great to know that you are an ardent admirerer of nature since your childhood and you loved to admire the beauty of flowers so much and so that you would get lost in the nature. I fully agree with you that creation of God always makes us to ponder over the beauty of nature. Nature is mystifying and special. We should always be near nature to make us feel better. Many thanks for doing research on the subject and coming out with the scientific details about the 5 petals theory, I did not know about it, I thorougly enjoyed reading it.

Hello my friend. Nature, including flowers and plants, is fascinating, and you've mentioned one of the reasons why. The design of each living thing is intricate and beautiful...well ordered by the Creator. The programming, though sometimes there can be a mutant type deviation, is programmed into each seed, and if a flower is to have five petals, well ordered and symetrical, that is what you'll get each time. Interesting thoughts! Karen

Hi Karen! We can say without any doubt that beautiful flowers are wonderful creation of the Great God and He would have done it purposly. Yes, seeds are programmed (may be by nature) so as to give a five petals flowers and give them a symmetry. We should keep enjoying its beauty. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Everything in nature is symmetrical till the center. I just feel happy looking at the flowers and a feeling of calm, if I can call it that, descends on me when I see most of them. They do have so much to tell us - in quieter sort of way. Flowers and dolphins - seem to be going out of their way to make humans happy - isn't it? Considering that they are not even the same species as we are, we should feel blessed to see such beautiful creations.

Hi Vandana! Undoubtedly, many of things are symmeterical and systematic in nature and we just keep wondering about it, without finding any concerete answers. Nature do make us happy, when we are close to it. It is true that we must be thankful to God for giving us an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature. Thanks for sharing your considered views.

Deepak, that's the wonder and beauty of nature isn't it ? Symmetry, form, shape, hues and colour, wonderous smells and more. These are beautiful flowers and I am sure the question has intrigued many as to why 5 petals for these flowers and why not 4 or 6. I think i'd rather admire and appreciate the beauty of them more than trying to mentally disect and understand the scientific reasons.

I have often wandered about this also but I have no idea about it either. I guess it has to do with genetics just like a human has five fingers and toes. That is all I can think of.

nature's little sign posts - Call those flowers nature's little sign posts with sweet treats attached!
I know for a fact it has something to do with evolution and bees. The five petals on each flower communicates something from each flower to it's pollinator. Exactly what, I have no idea, but you can call those flowers nature's little sign posts with sweet treats attached!

Hi craft! You may be correct that five petals may have something to do with pollinator and I have observed that there are numerous flowers with five petals, I mean there number are maximum in comparison to flowers with less than five petals. Beautiful flowers are supreme creation of the Great God. We should continue to enjoy beauty of nature. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

dpk hi I think perhaps God liked the idea of perfect symmetry and I have always noticed that five of anything seems almost to be perfect and a circle always means closure. leave it to God to make things so beautifully perfect.

When I was a child my grandmother used to grow Periwinkles. I haven't seen these in Trinidad for a long time. In fact, in over thirty years I only saw them once about three years ago in a plant shop in a far suburb. I remember my granny had them in rows in our front lawn. All the colours and shades and I used to stand up, as a child, and admire them.

Isn't God and nature amazing, Deepak? To think that from small seeds grow so many intricate and such a variety of flowers. A rose, for instance, or an iris, or yes, those perfect 5-petal flowers. Each so detail and well designed; each with the ability to propogate seeds to grow more of their kind. Again, amazing! Karen

hi Deepak, I’m really intrigued as to how you know the English names of so many flowers…I don’t even know the Bengali names of all of them LOL Anyways, I must admit that it’s a mystery to me as to why there are only five petals in most flowers…OK five looks very symmetrical but is that the only reason? *shrug* don’t know, I don’t think it was there in our botany class either! Let’s see if somebody has an answer to this latest ‘Deepak puzzle’

Yes, besides making ourself satisifed with the fact that flowers have five petals so as to give them some symmetry and good shape, we are not exactly aware is their any significance of five petals in flowers. So far none of the friends have answered the query or any logical reasoning for five petals, as soon as I come to know of it, I'll let you know. Thanks for sharing your views.
