What's the best invention of all times?

We wouldn't have got here without the man discovering how to make fire or the early tools, then there where the gun powder, electricity, the vaccine, the airplane, the atomic bomb, television, internet, cloning and of course, many, many others.
Which are your favorite inventions of all times? My personal first choice would be the internet, although I'm a big fan of airplanes and flying also. I think internet is special since it managed to bring people together a lot more than the others, but of course each one of them has it's own particular purpose, equal in importance. I mean, if no one would have discovered how to make fire, would we have ever got to have internet?

Sounds a lot like societal evolution. It is amazing how man has created so many things over time and how much different our world is now from what it was in the beginning. I am fascinated with how much has been created and I anticipate that the future will just get crazier. I think the internet is right up there on best inventions for the same reasons as you. I also love that we can be mobile, in lots of ways. We have a lot of options as far as modes of transportation...

True, mobility has also helped us find out what other places look like, how people live there, what is their culture and history, etc. In the past people had no or little idea about the rest of the world, they only knew their country and in many cases not even that. This was a huge wall starting to come down in the times they found out how to cross seas and oceans and coming down almost completely in our times. Of course, there's still some progress to be made still. But I totally agree with the fact that it's only gonna get crazier!

The things we learned when we learned to travel. Amazing! Now the world is so connected it is amazing. I hope to see a major international awakening of the people to coordinate and make this world an amazing place to live again. Hopefully I see that in my time here! :)

I love it when I stumble across people who think like me! Or should I say "feel' like me!? I'm hoping for the same awakening and I'm sure it's gonna happen in my lifetime. Actually, it's happening already!

For God's sake, people, stop getting yourself lost in translation. Electricity is a natural phenomenon not a human INVENTION. Exactly like fire. You can eventually say electricity is a DISCOVERY, a revealed secret of Mother Nature, but that' s all. Same with DNA. Humans didn' t invented DNA. Nature did. Humans just discovered the existence, structure and meaning of DNA. They didn't invented it because it was already invented and already existent in themselves, the inventors!
Just for the beauty of the english language, I will ignore my inner wish to mention the footbal game as the best invention and I will seriously answer that ... well... the best invention of all times is probably The New Testament. Because invention also has the meaning of being fabricated or made up. And this story still works, after 2000 years. Record age + record efficiency + record number of people influenced = the best.

:)))))))))))
I'd say religion itself is the best invention, but if you want to resume to The New Testament, be my guest. Give the football game 2000 years and we'll ask this question again, let's see which one is still around! :))) No, just jokin' about that.
But seriously now, I see your point... the greatest stories ever told (bible, coran, torah), taken together, are actually the greatest invention of all, and that's because it's the only one who got to every living human soul on earth.
But now the question arises: how much longer will they last? Cause we all know what begins must also come to an end.

I guess you didn't try hard enough to be accurate, VVroom, my friend! Did I make a comment too long and you never got to the end? Or you don't know what to answer?
Be accurate, if you'd like: How much longer do you think people will still believe in this story?

Well, I was also thinking about mentioning The Holy Bible or the religion but both things seemed a little bit near the other meaning of 'invention', I was trying to point out before. Very close, but not 100% there :) Not everything is 'invented' in the Old Testament and also in religions. Sometimes the truth is hidden in the back of symbols and metaphors. Sometimes is black on white. They had/ have the ability of telling the truth ( where it was the truth) but in such a manner that nobody cared/ cares about. Or really understand. The 'belief', is not in the true parts but in the story, in the invention. And the 'story' is mainly in the New Testament. Also religion as an institution operates with an eternal truth, just that the story is more attractive then the simplicity of the fact. So, I guess you will excuse me, Lightwarrior, for being too compulsive and having a word obsession on your topic. I was just trying to be accurate :))

Hi lightwarrior
Hmm to me wheel is one of the most important inventions of all times, oh that was so long ago but you know how important it is, it is for that now we are able to have so many motor vehicles for transportation and apart from that it was the wheel which helped us make so many various other machines to make things simpler for us, this is why invention of wheel surprises me a lot.
have a nice day lightwarrior!

I totally agree with the wheel. It escaped me in the original thread, I didn't even think about it :) The wheel proposition came as a nice surprise, especially as I started thinking about all sort of little machines who couldn't have been possible without it. So, the wheel is now in my top 5 inventions of all times :))
Have a great day observing the world, voldrox!

Well, the internet is really one of the best inventions of all times, but I think that the greatest one is namely the electricity, without it we wouldn't have neither have the internet, nor the computer. After that I think, comes the car/plane/ship, this way you can travel more faster, than walking. After that comes the most known medicine- the penicillin. In sphere of medicine, maybe that's the most important and known medicine. The television and the radio came before the internet, and even today, in these days of internet revolution, I think they stay one of the biggest inventions of all time. The are and many other great inventions about I haven't so much time to say, but I think that these are on the top of the rankings. And what the oters think? Do you agree with me, or you're not.

I think television is a good example of misusing an invention. I can't find anything interesting on TV lately. I don't really listen to radio either, they're all playing the same songs. This doesn't mean they're useless, but I've done my share of using them and I'm kind of tired of them.
I do agree with penicillin and in fact all inventions in the medicine field are quite important, but I still feel there are so many new things to find out about healing people that we seem to be millions of light years away of the perfect way to do it.

A very nice discussion started by you . I personally feel that the best invention which can be attributed by Man is Electricity . I have thought upon this many a times and every time concluded upon the same fact . Maybe others can deny this but its my personal opinion .

Personal opinion is exactly what I was hoping for and counting on, champrocker! And by the way, many people here agree with you on this one. Seems like after 19 replies the "war" for the first position is going on between Internet and Electricity. I'm getting more and more curious to see who's gonna win!

i personally think that the computer is the best invention, but thats only cause its the most useful to me. Its true we wouldnt have got here at all without all these inventions that people have stumbled on purely by mistake sometimes. but what about the inventions nobody has found out of dumb luck. and if someone had found it we would be using flying cars and eating a full meal with just a small pill.

I love computers too. I hate the fact that they don't always work, though. And I dream about the day that pill as a full meal will be on the market. Just for emergency cases, of course, like in a plane or in a country where you don't get along with the traditional cuisine, or after a long day at work, when you're too tired too cook.

welcome to the wonderful world of mylot. there are a lot of invention from before and the new inventions as well. every year people invent and find something new. with the new inventions there are pros and cons but if we use it the right way it will all give us something good. inventions made our lives easier and some save our lives as well. i agree with you it all started with fire and there it goes.... people always finds a new and invents something cool. we just have to use it properly.

Thanks, I'm just discovering this new mylot world and I found so many interesting topics and people around here that I already find it wonderful :))
Progress will never cease to happen, I think we can only chose a direction, maybe sometimes not even that. Or at least, just as you say it, when there's a new thing in town, use it properly.

I think you are right. The internet is still young. It holds more potential than people realize. One day, even the third world countries will be on it. When automatic translation of languages hits, communications and global differences will improve greatly. Then even poor people can have access to unlimited knowledge. Who knows when all that talking between countries happens, and we all get to understand each other, maybe war will be a thing of the past as well. People really are all the same all over the world. Our customs and cultures shouldn't keep us apart. It's all UNDERSTANDING!!

...and understanding comes from LOVE. People forget to love, getting caught in this speed that they have to keep up to. The bad side and the good side of the internet: getting people to rush to keep up to progress and then connecting them to make them feel they're part of the whole again.

There are many things that have been invented that have made life easier for people. I think the best invention was the telephone. People can communciated with people all over the world. It is used for people to get on the internet there is dial up, DSL. Then came the cell phone and the internet is on it and much more. People can not be without that cell phone anymore they communciated with friend use it for work and also for emergencies. There are not to many people who do not have at least one cell phone if not more.

Communication should be an invention itself. Hahahaha! I mean, at some point people needed to talk and they invented language... or maybe signs at first. We've come a long way, that's for sure! We always want more and I'm still expecting for the best way to communicate with others. Telephone was a huge step in communication and smoothed the way for the internet, or should I say made the invention of the internet called for. Who doesn't speak at least one time a day on their mobile or landline phone?

Mobility, mobility, mobility! The magic words! The first step was the wheel, as some point out here and I agree. And as we know, human beings need the base and then the world is theirs (ours). Once they had the wheels, sky was the limit. Now, there's no limit, or the limit is the galaxy! Good progress, right?

man this is an easy one. 2-ply toilet paper it was the first invention that created the barrier to keep your finger out of certain places. and its alot better then pinecones or the sunday times

Hehe! That's a good one! Weren't the chinese who invented paper? There's an invention! Again, in my top 5 even if I didn't think of it at first... and the toilet paper, we should thank chinese for that, also. Where would be mankind without it? We would all be a lot dirtier, that's for sure! :))

Maybe not the very best, but ranking way up there would be the GPS. I consider myself good at reading maps, and before I usually print out maps from mapquest whenever I travel to a different city, but now my GPS proves to be very indespensable. It's a big help driving in and out of LA where there are a lot of freeways, and you don't need the distraction of glancing frequently at your printed maps.

Getting lost is a thing of the past, right? Thank God for that! No, sorry, thank the guy who invented GPS for that! :)) I went to LA a few years ago and I have to admit that without my GPS I would still look for the way to anywhere in LA. Huge city, and it's not the only one. Too bad there are many places where GPS doesn't really work... There are still improvements to be made, like in any other domain that we talk about!

Hi light warrior, you've started very good discussion. My Choice was electricity. Its the basic thing for all the things. With out electricity , imagine the world. that will look horrible one. And of course internet also plays in major inventions. It is becoming part of human life. All the new inventions which are useful are heartly welcomed.

I think ALL inventions are useful in a way or another. It's just us who use them in a wrong way sometimes. But even this is useful, as we make mistakes and then we know what to fix or not do them anymore. Any step back can actually be a step forward, right?
And yeah, let's imagine the world without electricity: an endless earth hour! :))

In my opinion, the best invention of all time is a flushing toilet. In all seriousness. I mean, everyone uses it, there will always be a need for it, it will never become outdated, and it really makes life a lot easier. Everyone takes it for granted, and its about time someone gives toilets the credit its due.

Soooo true!! And we do take it for granted! Has anyone ever been to one of those 3rd world hole-in-the-ground-toilets? It's unbearable! They're impossible to use and still many people still use them, since they don't have sewerage in so many areas around the world. This is for sure a great invention!!

i think for me electricity is the best invention of all times... just imagine our lives without electricity... what kind of life will it be??? most of the appliances that we use daily need electricity... there is no way we can survive without it... so i always think that electricity is the best invention ever invented by humans so far... take care and have a nice day...

To me, it's the Microwave oven. It still baffles me for someone to come up with an idea to cook things without using fire and in so short a time? Although you can live without it, the convenience it brought specially to city dwellers is just amazing.

You are right to me, the greatest man had ever invented is the ability on how to "control fire". With it, man cannot succeeded in many aspects of inventions that follows associated with heat or fire. Controlling fire means we are able to eat our foods efficiently, travel much faster, communicate even faster, and reach the star. It seems like, we would still be living in the ice age if "controlling fire" have not been discovered or invented by man.
