use your windows cd installer and run it, choose repair and see if it can fix the issue. if not repair install your system, it will install fresh copy of windows but will not override your current configurations.meaning your programs will remain.

Also, you can manually copy NTLRD and ntdetect.com files from the i386 directory of you installer to the root directory of your harddrive, this will save you time.

Yup... but if he don't have a cd perhaps it's better to copy from his friend hard drive... cheersss

I agree with rdsantos. The only way to fix that problem is to use your installer cd.
However, why did your NTLRD went missing? Did you delete it? If not, there is a possibility a virus did it. I had the same case two years ago with my desktop...
