I was at the mall and I always love going into the pet shop and visiting all the animals. I always come out sad though because I want to take them home..lol...but anyway, I saw these two kittens that had no hair! I went over and took a look at them and they were all wrinkly and gray. Very odd really for a kitty. I think there is some kind of legends associated with these cats. Eygptian maybe. I know the were $1400 a piece! Have you ever seen one? Check this out.

I saw one at a cat show a long time ago, but other than that - no, not in person
I think I like my cats with fur - actually, I like my cats with short fur (only have 3 long haired in the bunch) and tails, all mine have tails, I wouldn't mind a poly-toed cat, but haven't gotten one of those yet either

This is the first time ever I am seeing one! It looks different than a feline creature except for the whiskers and the face. Thanks for this Jenin.

hi jenintn yes I saw a picture of a Sphynx cat once in a jigsaw puzzle if you please. I had never seen an uglier looking creature before, and wondered how they kept from getting sunburned,no fur, poor ugly things. I do not think I would want one as a pet even if I could afford one.ugh. yuck.

I've seen one. As a matter of fact, there was a rerun of 'Friends' on last night and there was a Sphynx cat in it. Ironic, huh?
I think they are so very strange! I don't think I'd want one. I like my pets to be furry or hairy. It would feel so weird petting a cat with no hair! And people actually pay that much for one of these? Unbelievable! Well, I know they need love, too, so I'm very glad that there are people who would buy these cats, for their sake.

They are very strange. I have heard there was one on a friend's episode. I was talking to a girl at work and she said she had seen one on there. I would love one but it would be weird to have a kitty cat without hair. Thanks for the response.

I'm pretty sure that I have. It was when I went to either Petco or PetsMart a few years back. I haven't gone to either of these places in a while so I haven't seen any since.
I have to say I couldn't imagine owning one. For me, a cat isn't a cat unless it has fur! And at that price it better have a lot! LOL
Happy mylotting!

I have seen them before; they are funny looking things aren’t they? I saw some in a cat book I have on cat breeds and at a cat show once. Great for allergy sufferers I guess! I showed my husband and he freaked out, he said he would never have one; I think he’s mean, they are not the prettiest felines but I bet they are lovable. You know me...I love them all, even at $1400 a piece...Not that I could ever afford one!

Hi Jen, I presume that I have seen it on tv or in movies before. But never had a chance to see it real life myself. With $1400 a piece, I think i can buy many kittens already. It looks quite ackward with the hairless part. Cats without hairs looks weird to me.

Yeah... they are really expensive! And IMHO, really ugly too!
I am sure they are TOUGH to maintain as well. Cos they got no hair/fur to protect their skin, they get cold easily. And due to the exposure of their skin to the elements, they also get rashes and other skin conditions very easily as well.
Life is tough. Why spent money to be a slave to an animal?

Good morning, dear Jen! I am such a mixed bag of contradictions....I hate the artificiallity of Pet Shows.....but I can NOT pass one up for curiousities sake! So, yes, I have seen Spynx Cats! They conjure I thoughts of me runnning home and knitting a nice warm, Buffalo wool coat sweater for them. LOL! I am always amazed at the number of species in cats and dogs, that I have never been aware of! Do you visit Pet Shows! Hope your TN, weather is better than "Auntie Jo's" or ours right now! We just had our Thanksgiving weekend, and it was fraught with FRIGID weather, breaking over 80 COLD records! NO wonderful rainbows in our skies, so still am very thankful for the beautiful one you sent me. BIG, BIG, HUGZ, Jen!

Sorry...Jen, I was not referring to televised shows...I meant real live Pet Shows. That is what I am a sucker for, yet I hate the plasticality of it all, assuming that these poor animals would sooner be home, lollygagging! LOL!
How do you keep your wee little mites (chihauha's) warm...? And did you keep the whole family? Hoping your weekend is spectacular...and BIG HUGZ!

Hi pergammano! I'm hanging onto that rainbow to because the weather here has been pretty nasty too. We have had a couple of nice days but for the most part it is just rainy and constantly getting cooler.
I actually do enjoy watching pet shows. They are usually dog shows though. They hardly ever televise cat shows unfortunatly. I have never been to a real one but I would like to attend one just for the sake of having done so at least once. Sounds like you better knit you one of those sweaters too my friend..brrrr. Hugs and kisses to you too and try to stay warm.

I have heard of them. Never seen them though. I would love to breed them. Could make a hunk a money, huh? And they are cute to boot. I am a cat lovers. Have always had cats around me all of my life. The Sphynx has quite a history. I am a Egyptology researcher as well. Fun topic. I really like your new pic too!

They make great indoor cats because they do need to be inside. I think the Egyptian wild cat is very handsome and the link below shows a pick of it. There are several different colors of sphynx and they are doing some new breeding as well. I don't know how much you know about the history of the cat. They were very highly prized in their day. Ofcourse there were several goddesses, the most popular was Bastet. Cats were highly prized then because of the amount of mice and snakes at that time. Breeding is hard. I wouldn't be able to do it. Here are a couple of links of interest:

They are defintely unique looking aren't they? Actually, the Sphinx originated in Canada. A cat had a litter where two of her kittens were hairless and from those two they were bred. I've never touched one before, but, they say that they actually have a fuzzy covering of hair that gives them the feeling of soft suede. Sounds luxurious! Because they are practically hairless their body temperature is normally 10 degrees higher than the average cat. I would love to touch one someday.

I've seen a few in pet stores and at first I thought the cat was sick or something because it had no hair. Sorry to say that I don't find them very attractive. I guess to each his own but for me, they sort of creep me out. Poor things in the winter, too, they have no fur to cover up.

Yes as I have two.
It would seem there is a lot of misinformation out there about Sphynx Cats.
1. There are 3 hairless breeds of cats. The most popular is the Canadian Sphynx, then there is the Don Sphynx and Peterbald, both from Russia.
2. Sphynxes are a natural mutation that occurs in cats every 25 years or so
3. Sphynxes are a hardy healthy breed once they reach adult hood
4. Sphynxes do not need clothing, but do need to be kept warm, as do humans. If you are cold, your Sphynx will be too
5. Sphynxes have a unique personality that means they are almost kitten like in their behaviour for life. Often describe as a cross between a dog, monkey and child.
Yes Sphynxes look unusual, but so does your cat under all that fur ;)

Wow! Thanks for all that information! I'm so glad you decided to respond! I know a cat breeder that told me the same thing about the mutation. He breeds munckin kittens. That's a mutation breed too. He also said they were from Canada. I thought they originated from Egypt. It's hard to imagine a hairless cat in Russia..the weather and all. Thanks again and I will check ouy your blog about these incredible animals.

Diet for a Sphynx cat is premium cat foot with a minimum of vegetable filler (cats are true carnivores and need NO vegetable matter what so ever)....and Sphynx Cats are still cats, if you are allergic to the protein in cat saliva then you will also be allergic Sphynxes.
If you are interested in Sphynxes, pop over to www.sphynxcatblog.com for more information on the breed
