Police say we must make sure to lock our doors...burglars on the loose

United States

Hello all. On the evening news, everyone in my city and the surrounding countryside have been cautioned to double check to make sure the doors to their homes are securely locked! It seems that there have been 20 home break-ins in the past few weeks, and the burlars are still on the loose. They target only the jewelry, but take it all. I live in a small city, and whereas there IS crime, it remains much lower than in the larger cities. Do you have much crime where you live? Have the authorities ever come on television to warn you about a specific criminal/s on the loose and told you to take extra precautions against them? Do you think the precautions really work? I have some doubt, as the burglars tend to break in, even when doors ARE kept locked! Karen

There were times when police force, radio and tv stations were full-forced in alarming the people about hard core prisoners who escaped from jail. They provided complete information about the prisoners identity and even flashed their pictures on the tv screen. Information and cautions like these are really helpful in ensuring our safety. With or without advise or loose prisoners/criminals we need to observe all the necessary precautions.

Hi Ms. You're so right! We have a large maximum security prison less than 40 minutes away, so those particular warnings are a sometimes thing. But I think even small town people know these day to take precautions. This particular group of robbers seem very adament and active and particularly good at eluding the police! Hence, the warnings for extra caution. This age is a far cry from the one during which I was a child. The criminals are younger and more violent with each passing year. Children, for goodness sake! That is scary and makes us think something went terribly wrong in the past couple of decades and needs to be corrected. Thank you for your input. Karen

You are right, and it's scary when even your own home isn't safe. Ugh!

Before we used to consider our home as the safest place to live in but not this time. It seems like there is no more safe place to stay and live in. Anytime you can be surprised and attacked by these people. Let's just hope and pray that we will be spared from all these possible dangers! Have a great weekend!

Wow! That is disturbing, but then how amazing that you were, up til this point, living in a place where people would feel secure in NOT locking their doors. I live in a place where there are hot spots that seem to attract crime and where it rarely happens in other spots.

Hi Canellita. The days when country or small-town people felt no need to "lock up" have been gone for a while now. The police were stressing, though, that all should double check, just to make sure. But locked doors seldom deter crime anyway! Karen

That's scary! You must be careful. Ours is a pretty much peaceful area and even though burglary happens but its mostly due to carelessness on people's part. My father is a very cautious person and locks, double locks the main entrance. He takes up quite a bit of time to check and make sure that things are all locked. We live in a personal three storey house with lots of doors and windows. I am not that careful though. When my parents are away to another city, I just lock the main gate, which I know is not right.

Hi Mim. The world IS a scary place at times, even though we don't make it our central focus. It still makes sense for us to take all the precautions that we can, so I understand your father's actions. I would, were I you, lock doors and windows, along with the gate. You just never know! Karen

U be careful lady, people will do anything. Heaven forbid that they break in on u but if it happens give them everything they want & PLEASE BE CAREFUL. i KNOW YOU DON'T FEEL GOOD W/THAT GOING ON AROUND U. i KNOW WHEN THE RAPIST WAS ON THE PROWL HERE U CAN'T HELP BUT BE AFFECTED BY IT. dO U HAVE AN ALARM SYSTEM' We all need one & i said i was going to get one but haven't. It is something to think about. The police did get on the tv when before the rapist was caught but surely everyone was being careful & locking up everything. We all get too careless at times. So true, and such a sad state of affairs when that's the case. I hope they catch them soon, too! But as of the evening news...not yet. Hugs!!

It IS scary, because this group is so brazen and have commited even four more robberies since I posted this discussion! They elude the police by moving around a lot from city to country and back again. Ugh. It's almost as though they know where the police will or will not be. As you said, I'd tell them to take whatever they want. No point in risking one's life for material things! You sleep well tonight. Hugs, Karen

If a burglar wants to get into my house or into my car they are going to do it whether I keep the doors locked or not. That said, I do keep my doors locked when I leave the house and I do lock the car doors whenever we aren't at home and at night. Where we live right now, I've yet to see any problems with crime in the area, but I do believe that there are probably times when there is some crime in the area. We've only been here for six months so I don't really know everything yet. I have heard the neighbors say that they are more afraid of fire than of a break-in so that puts me somewhat at ease. However, we don't exactly live in a rich neighborhood and some of the areas that surround our neighborhood border on being projects so I do know that there will be crimes that pop up from time to time.

Hello my friend Just be safe and take care of yourself, with the holidays coming people are desperate and they will do any or anything to get what they feel they need, its really sad, they have some scary things going on where I live as well, but I try not to think about too much, can't afford to allow these things to make me paranoid considering I have to go out, I put it in gods hands and know that wherever I go he has my back. Thank you, smoochesss

Hi Kitty. You've made some very good points. The holidays are a time when crimes go up, and yes, many people do get especially desperate these times. I'm not paranoid. It stood out to me, simply because in a small town, it's the exception rather than the rule :) Thank you for great advice, which I shall take to heart! Hugs, Karen

Oh goodness! I hope they find them soon and take them to jail. We have crime here just like I think is everywhere. I keep my doors and windows locked but people can still break in if they really want to get in. Yes, they have come on tv before on the news and told us to be careful for certain people that were in certain areas.

Hi Sweet. As of now, they are still on the loose and still active. Soon, though, the police are bound to catch up with them. At least they now know what kind of vehicle this group travels in. Be safe! Karen

There's some crime, but I haven't seen a warning like that. We live at the top of a long, steep driveway and I think that would discourage some criminals.

Hi Dawn. Some stay in more populated areas, whereas other thieves target remote areas ... but I surely hope your hill will act as a deterent. It's not good to feel unsafe in one's own home! Take care. Karen

I say bring on the burglars Once I am at home when they break in, all is good. The crime rate here is pretty low so it is only the odd low life that we have to deal with.

Hello Zone. Not me, I say keep the buglars away! I had all of my things stolen from a storage unit once, and would not care to begin replacing things once again. I'm glad you're in a safer area than say a large city. Karen

Hi Karen, I see this on TV often, the police giving warnings on some burglars and about new modus operandi of notorious groups that work together to rob houses. Me, after the recent typhoon has damaged my door I immediately had it repaired and replaced the door locks. My door alarm was also soaked in flood and has been damaged as well, so I need to go the the hardware to find a replacement. I guess these days you can't leave your doors open, even during day time.

Hi Dory...It's a shame that after a disaster, looting and crime rises sharply when people are already struggling in the aftermath. Do your best to stay safe! Karen

The unfortunate downfall of society in an economical disaster. When people can't find jobs and have problems feeding their kids this is what happens. I had to start locking our doors for the first time since we moved out here 12 years ago. I HATE it.

PeacefulWmn9, I've never lived in a city, so I don't know that much about what goes on in a city. I live in a rural community in the Southern United States, and we don't even sleep with our doors or windows locked. It's fall now, so we sleep with the windows open at a night most of the time. When we go to the grocery store, most people don't bother locking their cars. I'll admit, there is the occasional story of someone's 4-wheeler getting stolen or gas getting stolen, but most of the time, those things work themselves out, especially if we can find out who took it. Stealing is considered one of the worst things you can do to another man where I live, and if we catch someone stealing, they usually wish it WAS the police that caught them instead of the person they stole from. I will say though, every year around Christmas, they always make an announcement on the local news that around Christmas is when most burgleries happen, and to shop in groups, but they're generally talking about when you go into town to shop. I hate city's, but I'm glad they exist, but they keep the crazy people there, and leave us alone.

Hi Lacey. How wonderful to live in such a place, but even these are becoming a rarity. When I lived in the countryside, several neighbors houses were robbed while they were at work. What wasn't stolen was utterly smashed and defaced. Ack! So do be cautious. Things can change unexpectedly. Karen

The way i see it is that if someone wanted to break into any house then they have windows that they can break.I know breaking a window may disturb peoples sleep and maybe it can be heard, but lets be honest where i live there are always a noise out side so i do not think that i would pay much attention to it.

Hi Jugs. You're right...a burglar will get in one way or another, locked doors or not. They showed a picture on the news in this case, for instance, where the door WAS locked, but had been kicked multiple times, and they entered that way regardless. I live in an apartment building, so yes, each noise has become familar, so I don't check it out unless it is unusual! Karen
