Trying to make a little money interferes with my novel writing

I am writing a novel, or rather am perfecting my novel for publication (about three more drafts to go) but the trouble is that I am also trying to make a little extra money on you know, and on ptcs. Right now I can write about 500-600 words a day, but much of it is revisions, since it has already been written on the previous draft and all I have to do is to fix it up, take it out, or change it as well. I have been told on the writing site I am a member that in order to be successful one has to write ten hours a week at least and I do not think they are talking about the editing or learning new words, learning grammar, or research. On top of that, I have my husband to look after who is an invalid. I have cut down Tv watching to a few favorites and will take my journal and write in it, but that is not working on the novel.
So for those of you trying to write a non-fiction, novel, or whatever for publication have you found that the present recession, need to make a little money interfere with your need to get your book published?

I subscribed to Writers Digest and if you go to my profile, I do have some advise. I learned mainly by after I subscribed to the Writer's Digest was to join their Writing Book club and getting books on how to write. I also checked on the internet for articles on novel writing. You could see if there is a creative writing class at your college. Now me I had to work so I could not go to university and I had to learn on my own, but if you are still young, you can take night courses, etc.
And join a critique group, one that just allows members to see their works, you can check Yahoo egroup for that. That will help.

it is very good. I still have my writing books that I got when I first started and they helped me a lot.

Hi suspensful, fortunately my novel is finished. I think I edited it about seven times, and had two teachers read it also. Unfortunately finding an agent, or a company that might lead to having my novel published is proving the difficult part. Good luck, and I hope you can find a publisher for your work.

I have not gotten around with looking for an agent yet. I think it is easier here in Canada as well as the States. I am on the seventh draft of it, and it seems that it still is not ready yet. I do not want to cut it down too much and yet I do not want to ramble. The trouble is that I have to make extra money and that is interfering with my novel writing.

I do not like relying entirely on my pension. True I was a housewife for most of my money and I like the idea of the government recognizing that but I want to make a little of my own. It would make me feel less obligatory and there are things like a lap top that I would rather pay out of my own earnings then taking it from the household cash.

I would like to be able to write more on a project like a novel, but I will not get paid until it is published, I really do like writing on mylot, but I also feel if I do not write on my novel every day except Sunday I will not get ahead and before I used to work on two novels and an article at the same time. Cannot do that anymore and I do not want to make a choice between either make a little money or write on your novel.

I'm not writing a book but I can tell you that trying to make money online is a full time job! I mostly write to make money and there are many days when I dread getting up and sitting down at the keyboard for 8 hours of writing, surveys, etc. There are no jobs here.
I understand your dilemma. Have you checked out this site, http://homeworkersnet.com/ I joined it but haven't had time to do anything with all my writing assignments, but I checked it out and it seems to be legitimate. It might be more effective than what you're doing now.

Unless I'm left all alone in a room with nobody to answer to buy myself then what you are attempting is quite impossibly possible. I have about 5 books that I'm currently writing at the same time. Sometimes I have to let them sit so I can think of character direction. I currently write for a client site and for AC. I also write for a music website. My great American novel can wait for now, I'd rather build up my monetary skills because they novel will hit and you won't have any time for anything else.

Glad to hear that you are able to focus still on Writing your Novel with all of the issues with your husband and such. Sometimes I think you owe it to yourself for being able to keep focused, and still be able to post in here from time to time. I know I have a Dream of writing some Books in time myself, but between working full time, my Health, Church stuff, and trying to find time to post in here, etc. as is takes all my time to where my Writing seems to suffer for sure. I think maybe you just need to set goals and a game plan and learn to focus on that more maybe and then see if that helps at all. Wishing you the Best.

When my sons were small, I did not get that much time to write and before I was married, I had a typewriter all right, two in fact, the first an old Royal manual and the second a portable electronic one, but I moved a few times, there was not that much space and there was no such thing as places where you could save your work except in your head or on paper, both that were not reliable. So it was not until the computer became cheap enough for families to afford that I could go and write in earnest. Right now I can write 500 to 600 words on my novel, but the trouble is, it is in spits and spurts during the day and so I am not on the computer long enough without being called, to do my best work. I do get on myLot, but I do not have to worry about it being under the same scrutiny that an editor would give my work.
That is why, I want to be able to work on mylot and write my novel and make enough from mylot to get my laptop plus the other things necessary for writing like stamps, etc. paper, and also be able to improve my writing so I do not get the manuscript back with red xes all over it.

Yeah, I know how that is. I'd love to get another book published, but right now I need to be actually making money, instead of working in a "future investment" in time, so to speak. How are you going to get your book published? Traditional publisher, or self publisher? My husband and I self published.

Going to get an agent. I can write 500 to 600 words a day. Of course it is mostly revision, and I want to have some time to do more research and to make a summery plus make sure the grammar is right. I figured that I should have a little more time, but I don't and I need the money so I cannot write the two hours i would like to.

I totally relate to your frustration. I've put aside my novel to earn money. But I feel as if I'm spending too much time trying to write articles for a couple dollars each. I'm getting caught in a vicious circle. Recently I changed my work schedule, working 10-hour days 4 days a week. Having the 3-day weekend was appealing. I thought I'd spend my 3-day weekends doing more writing. I feel lately I'm just spinning my wheels. Guess I'm in a funk right now. Hope things look up for you...

It's really a matter of choice. Writing a novel and publishing it will surely earn you bigger amount but I think it would take time for you to gain that. There are so many good writers out there who have started publishing books. It's so difficult to compete with those professional writers, but here in mylot, you don't compete with anybody. You earn a little but with consistency. If you really are into earning, then you might as well choose making money in mylot and other online writing stuff which pays a little rather than investing too much time and effort in a novel. Well, my suggestion would be different if it's your dream that you are trying to achieve by finishing your novel.

I want to do both, write my novel and write on mylot. One will not pay until it is published, and the other pays every month. Right now I am writing 500 to 600 words a day not counting Sundays, but the trouble is I also want to improve my writing skills, get the grammar right, and do research. I also want to get a lap top, a very good one so that I can take the computer in the front room and work on my novel instead of running into the computer room all the time. That way I can easily put in at least two hours a day.
I do want my novel published it is just getting the money to do it and the time.

i think you will fail in both writing the novel and earning as well because both need much time to be invested and a lot of care doing those two things. you got to work in weekly basis one week of writing and the next week earning.that way is going to be easy and a lot of time utilization

Sounds rather discouraging. I do think that the economy has gotten bad so many people who want to be writers like writing novels or non-fiction books will have to forgo that and earn money by other means. But then you are young. I can write 500 to 600 words a day on my novel, and a little on myLot, most of which is commenting on responses, and few on starting new discussion. I can work on my novel every week, because I am here in the house and can go to the computer and if I give up one week to work on mylotting and the other onllne things, that would mean that my novel would suffer since you need to be working on what you write every day to make any improvement.
Thus if I followed your suggestion, I would fail.

Yes, it does! Except that I enjoy all writing, even research articles. So the truth is, I have several projects going at once! I tend to get lost in forums and Mylot - that takes away time from my writing. But it's all good, i get ideas from these sources, too.

I do not have time for the other forums. I would love to go to my classical music forum but can't. (yes there are a couple of singers in my novel, and they do early medieval works) I do wish I could make more money in a shorter time so that I could concentrate more on my writing.
But what I really wanted to find out was not how you advocate your time now, or whether I should stop watching too much tv, or whether I should concentrate my on working rather then writing. I wanted to know was if compared to before the recession and the slow down of the economy, whether you all who are writers found it more difficult to allocate time to your goal of writing your novel or non-fiction book or your short stories or articles since you no doubt had to work longer hours for less money in your necessity job.
For me, I have to work online longer if I wanted to make the same money I made last year and if I did that my writing would suffer and I am not talking about myLot. So I am cutting down on my online to concentrate on my writing and it is a good thing I put some money into my high interest savings account or I would not have been able to do that.

I am trying to make a little more money and I do a lot of writing on mylot, as well as on my novel writing. but if I have to go somewhere, I cannot do that much writing on my novel. The last week or so has been very busy. I can write on my novel, but I also want to do more research on it. However most of our pension goes to utilities, food, etc. so I feel I have to make a little extra and that is what makes it frustrating. I probably could make money if I sent stuff in through email, but I also have to put in the cost of mailing if I do through snail mail. When I first looked into writing, I found that there were a lot of fiction online, but that you did not get paid, you just got a complimentary copy. I hope that it has changed since then.

Hello suspenseful!! I am new to the "writing world" and have currently submitted
2 short novels to a publishing company in our place. I have a dream of writing
another series of books-still short novels-just to enhance my writing skills.
Yet, I must say that I also dreamed of writing more. I actually have put details
down on papers so I could remember my characters so well. I am also writing a true-to-life story, which I see to be good enough because I need not to imagine
situations-I just have to interview the characters myself! I am also trying to write about my personal experiences as well. I did so much blogs on some sites-which doesn't pay. And the only paying site I'm attending now is mylot.
So,at this present time, I'm still waiting for the feedback for the manuscripts I sent.
My mind began grambling when I realized that I have so much to work out for. But you see, one of the most important thing about writing is TIME MANAGEMENT. All you have to do is prioroitize your writings-which of them do you want to finish first? Or you can also practice assigning the days for your writings-what book are you focusing on today and what is it for the next day. Lastly, set a day for those little extra moneys you are trying to make. I have a friend who works and is also active on online jobs. He's so good in doing it! It amazes me when he announces how much he earned for a week.
The problem about being a writer is that-when you start, you feel like you'll never want to stop at all. Just put in mind that prioritizing your works will help you manage your time on writing novels as well as making some extra moneys...

I wish I could do more. I can get so many words out, but I feel also that upgrading and improving my writing is taking second fiddle to the need to make a little extra money. For instance, my grammar is not as good as it should be and as for my singing, I need more practice that is the appeggio and scale stuff and how to make it so that the people at the back of the church can hear me. Not only that, I need to get a digital piano since my husband needs a wheelchair to get out and it would be easier for someone to come over rather then I go to their house or someone stays with him while I go out.

WOW!!! you're singing, too?! that's cool. because I myself is a singer. But I'm hardly busy as you are. I only write when I'm not doing anything. Like, it's just a past time. Well, I wish you luck. And I hope you can find a way to stretch your schedules so that you'll be able to do everything you want-without giving up anything. And ofcourse, may you find an internet jod that will help you earn more while waiting for the publication of your book.
Hey, just want to share...you know the friend I've mentioned to you? He's working in office. Yet, he's also working on internet jobs. Then, he is also repairing computers almost everyday! He's not a technician, but he's so talented and can really do computers and even laptops. He is an engineering graduate but hasn't acquired for a liscence yet. But he's earning anyway. And he actually loves what's he's doing. See, how that works? And he gets paid with every thing he does! And he is also a musician. He teaches piano lessons. Well, I always thought that it's not easy to do. But he can manage!
That's something! I really hope that you can also manage your time so well... And please...let me know if your book has been published. I am a very addicted reader. I hope your book will turn out good-really, that's every writer's wish. GOOD luck tou you and GOD bless. HAPPY myLOTTING!

I am going to look for an agent. I do not have enough money to self publish, or rather the money I have is allocated for other purposes. I have not checked on one specifically, but I have looked into publishers that would take my type of book. It does need a bit more revising though before it is ready, so it will take at least a couple of more revisions. I wish I had more time to write on it, but I am also trying to make a little extra money, as well as look after my husband, do the household work, etc.
