I think the reason that they look like they are smiling is that their jaws are open. But I think the dogs have their moods as well. I think they are happy because they are with their owners.

I definitely think dogs can and do smile. My dogs quite often smile when they are happy. Their faces also show it when they are bummed out, excited, and angry. Dogs' faces are very expressive. George Carlin (comedian) chalked it up to them having eyebrows, but I think they also use their mouths and ears to show their emotions - not to mention their tails! :) My cats are expressive in much subtler ways.

Yes you are right. Same thing I pointed to my husband last week when we saw our dog sitting on bed with his mouth open and the expression on his face was totally different from his routine expression.

I know they say that dogs can't smile, but I have two Pit Bulls, and they always look like they're smiling when they greet us. I think that people don't give dogs enough credit for what they can and can't do, and what they can and can't understand.

Oh, I think that is their way to breathe. Although they have nose I can tell it is their way of breathing why their mouth is open. They are not smiling, the is their regular face LOL. Their nature is like that, open mouth and sliding tounge. I observed that in my dog before, when I cover their mouth and hold it for a second they are irritated and they moved away my hand, because they can't breathe.

Hello jj. I have never noticed that dogs smile. After reading your discussion, I made a decision to search for some pictures with smiling dogs and I am happy to say that I have seen some which seem that they are smiling. I think that it is a wonderful feeling of the dogs if they can smile the way they like. Thank you for the discussion that draws my attention. Happy posting.

Hi jugsjugs! My dog smiles all the time. He does more of the closed mouth smile but when he's laying there, you can see that he went from a standard closed mouth to seeing his mouth skin & lips curl upwards into a content happy smile! Its AWESOME when it happens when we're petting him or hugging & kissing him!

My dogs smile all the time! Especially Goldie, she's always smiling and wagging her tail. My other dog, Sam, smiles when he's nervous and knows he's in trouble lol. Maggie smiles when she's happy too!
But the best dog smile I have ever seen was from a dog at work! She bared it all when she smiled!!! Her nice shiny teeth, her lips spread ear to ear! It was great! lol. My coworkers had to let each other know that the dog was smiling and NOT threatening :P She was the sweetes dog!!!

Yes, some dogs actually look like they are smiling it is kind of funny actually. My dog used to have what I would consider her happy face. Sometime's peaple's scents would bother her and her nose would wrinkle up a bit which made her teeth show a little bit and it would like she was trying to smile, but I think it was just because something about the way that person smelled annoyed her nose, because she would usually sneeze shortly after. But it looked like a wicked smile, although it wasn't.

I have a dog that looks like she's smiling when she gets her tummy rubbed. I haven't really looked at the dogs in the park but if they were going to be smiling, I bet that would be the best place to catch them doing it. I'll have to pay attention next time.

Hi jugs
I have seen some dogs that look like they are smiling. I once had a poodle. He was crazy about my husband. Whenever he would come in from work the poodle would go nuts. Then when hubby picked him up he would turn around and look at me and I swear it looked like he was smiling at me. I say he was. Probably saying now you can't get me mom..LOL..Have a great weekend and keep smiling..
