Is softdrink good for the child?

My friend has a two year old child and is really fond of drinking juice, may it be pinapple, lime, orrange, manggo or even iced tea. She would even give her a soda for a drink. When I noticed that I told her it is not good for kids to be drinking softdrinks, she said it is okay for the kid is allowed to drink lime juices which is also acidic. I told her that even juices and ice tea is not even good for it may cause UTI... What do you think of her opinion? or am I the one who is wrong with this understanding?

NO - soft drinks are not good for little ones, anything like that has too much sugar for them and their teeth will suffer. Like you say, it is OK for her to make a judgment (however wrong) about her own kids, but she should definitely take notice of what you say when it comes to offering drinks to your child.
You are quite right in your understanding that anything with excess sugar including sweets are bad for a child's teeth. We don't stop our little one having sweets, but we definitely keep an eye on how many she has, and tell her when she has had enough. Every time we go to the dentist, she is very proud of the good comments she gets. Also note that after eating or drinking anything acidic, you should not make them clean their teeth straight away, you should wait at least half an hour or so...

I believe that the acid temporarily erodes the protective layer that saliva naturally provides. I think the theory goes that if you brush before the protective layer has returned, you can damage the teeth. It may be only an urban myth, but it is a common one - maybe worth looking into a bit more....

Really? I didn't know that... What is the effect if you let your child brush their teeth right away after eating sweets? I was just asking this so I know what to do with my own child when she is already allowed to brush. My child still have 4 teeth on top and 2 teeth below. By the way is she already allowed to brush her teeth though she still have very few teeth.

Yah I think that might be a good thing to remember too. Sometimes urban myth are really true since those were the experiences of people who live before. The teaching that they are handling down from generation to generation were also based with their own experiences. Thank you for that

If you look at most juice they all contain about as mush added sugar as sodas do. With the out break of the swine flu I would be giving or drinking any thing with any added sugar. One can of soda will lower your immune system by 50% with in 10 minutes of drinking it. That makes catching the swine flu raise about 50% and making it much harder for the body to recover. Water is so much healthier and can be flavored with out sugar.

Softdrinks are dangerous not just for children but for adults too. I know that sodas affect your kidney greatly. My aunt got a kidney failure because of drinking too many coke. You are right. Those drinks are hazardous. I try to avoid them as much as I can and drink water instead. I wonder why wouldn't she just give her children milk. It's the best drink I know for children that are growing up.

I did asked her the same way then she said that her child will drink milk during other time but during snack time she give some refreshments. I suggested to her that why not giving her child some cold fresh milk or a glass of cold chocolate share, she said that she haven't tried really and not very sure whether her child would like it.

Your statement to her is absolutely right. I;m confused though that she called those drinks refreshments; they're junks! And did you mean she gives them regularly? Because you said the drinks were given during snack time. I just hope that someday she'll realize or the children learn the truth from schools. What a parent..

I sure hope so... But school is yet too far since her daughter is still two years old... I hope she could have a semenar on what good food and drinks will be given to her child. I don't think that my friend is being immature since both of us are of the same age. She said that she used to drink softdrinks even when she was young and nothings wrong with her... I am really worried with her child.

hi jndlponti, you are not wrong at all, your friend is, but for other reasons than the one you describe as not familiar with that being a complicaton.
Basically soft drinks are just sugar and empty calories and no small child needs that rotting their teeth and getting the habit of thinking this kind of junk is normal. Juice too can also be bad for the teeth as a high sugar content and will affect the second teeth which are already forming in the gums.
The best drinks for small children are water and milk, indeed for a child of any age, and fruit juice sometimes but fresh not ready packaged.

Well my son is ten and is not allowed them but here they are also educated about these things as well as being told at home. Because we have very hot summers the children know that soft drinks are dehydrating and dangerous in the sun, and that water is needed so it is not an issue. Maybe once a week or less he may have a fanta if we are out but he knows that is a treat.
If your child is too young to accept facts and just wants a drink then it is down to you to not give it and refuse when another person offers, He would only get a taste for it if you allow it. I saw one child of less than five though and every single tooth was black from sodas and sweets. Just teach your child that these things are bad for them.

Thank you for that. Really I was thinking already that this may be a habit for that child. That she may thought drinking such thing is just really okay and is very normal.
What I have in mind now is that what if one day my child would ask me why is my friend's child allowed to drink soda anytime she wanted to, while she is not even allowed to.

Soft drink is horrible, nasty stuff full of chemicals that are addictive and very bad for your health. You are right and a good friend to point this out to her, but people have to choose for themselves. We can only make them aware of the dangers of putting chemicals into our bodies, they have to choose for themselves!
The best sweet drink is real fruit juice, the kind that is freshly juiced, not in a container. Water is the best, although most tap water here is loaded with chemicals too, so we buy natural spring water to drink!

Yes the filtered spring water tastes better too, without the chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals in it! It comes straight from the spring on a nearby mountain to the filtering and bottling factory, which is where we buy it from! It costs us $20 per week though, but it is worth it!

Is that the cost of it in your place? I do not know the cost of that here in the place where I am already living now, but before when I used to live in my parents we are not paying for it.
The dentist said that the spring water is good for children also to avoid the early decay of their tooth. It has a natural minerals that is much richer nutrients than the filtered one.

Yah. These days we really have to be careful what to eat or drink. Even the tap water now is not at all safe, their are some that contains minerals that can cause bad stomach. So it is still wise to drink that spring water that you were talking about. thank you for your response.

Anything if taken too much is not good especially soft drinks. And for whom? A two year old child? That's definitely bad for the baby. You should suggest your friend to consult a doctor or go to pediatrics so that she can understand clearly the harmful effects of soft drinks to babies. This should be acted asap to avoid possible complications. I hope you can convince your friend.

I really don't think so that way, maybe she is it is just that she has this reason that she don't want to be so strict with the way raising kids so her child could enjoy every minute of being you.
She gives not just junk food, but also candies... The kid likes to ate chocolates, lollipops and lots of ice cream.
Their was one time when they were in our house, the kid were asking me candies but I do not have any because I don't give candies to my child. I asked the kid whether she is hungry then she said just a bit, so I get the cookie jar and make some choco shake for her and my child. My child was eating up the snack but that kid did not even pick one cookies because she do not like eating cookies or sandwich on snack time.

I really do hope so I could convince her. If she would not listen to my opinion about that softdrinks maybe she would listen if a registered doctor will be the one to tell her. She has a regular pediatrics and that pedia was even wondering why the child is still 9kg while she is laredy 2years old. The pedia was not aware that she was given softdrinks and junk foods that is why her appitite for good food was lost.

yes, first of all the cold drink is not a natural drink and has chemicals and addictives added to it which are not good for the health.
it contains caffiene which is an addictive material and people gets addicted once they drink it.

The kiddo needs water. Even when she is given juice, it should be half water half juice as children need plenty of water and don't know enough to ask. As for softdrinks, that's a no-no. Soft drinks contain lots of sugar which will have the little one bouncing like a bit of popcorn. The diet soft drinks contain chemicals that have been known to cause cancer in rats and mice, who have systems somewhat like ours.

The soda habit is hard to break, but it is worth future health to break it.

wow you make me laugh with that "the little ones will be bouncing like a bit of popcorn". Yes i heard it could make them hyperactive. I learn about that from the parent of my student, because my student is a special child with ADHD, and the child is not allowed to drink soda or eat chocolate because it would make them more hyperactive and sometimes do not even go to sleep during the night.

I guess it depends on how much and how often a child is given pop. I suppose a small glass every once in a while might not hurt things. However, I'm not giving my children any pop until they're at least 5-years-old, and then I'm going to limit it. They don't need the sugar, not the caffeine. My kids are hyper enough without it.
My daughter, who's almost 5, has only ever had a little bit of 7-up, and this was when she was sick, and a little kit of SunKist. That's it. She usually drinks apple juice, water, milk and Kool-Aid. She can't miss what she never really had.
My son, who's 2, has never drank pop, and he's had the same stuff as my daughter. He's hyper as a jackrabbit. lol
I'll figure out the pope situation when I cross that bridge.

Thank you for that response. And thank you for sharing your opinion about it and about how you raise your children. I guess it is not really good to offer softdrinks to kids about 2 years old. They are much too young for that. But I think not also bad to give 5 years old kids a soda once in a while with just a little amount.

The acidity of cola beverages is not the same as the acidity of lime or other natural fruit juices because that of carbonated and soda drinks are the same as that of of synthetic vinegar that can pierce and tear down intestines and stomach lining. Those of fruits are natural and even have alkaline, anti-oxidant and healing power. Cola drinks is very rich in sugar to hide the acidic taste so that the children who drinks too much of this will soon get either diabetic or gingivitis or cavities. Cola drinks are but a harmful mixture of phosphoric acid, sugar, caffeine, artificial color and flavoring which will eventually harm drinkers as it can corrode stomach linings and can destroy the alkaline-acid balance of the kidneys, and it can also ruin the liver. The mother will surely regret what she is doing. She should not be ignorant of what is good and bad when it comes to feeding her children. Iced tea is not also advisable because it has caffeine which is an addictive substance that will make the child hyperactive and restless.
So your friend is very wrong and must learn a lot about healthy diet if she wants to be a good mother to her children.

Thanks a lot!!! That was a very informative one. So that is why she herself already have false tooth maybe that is because of her fondness in sodas. And even my mom is also one of those people who is addicted to soft drinks. But my mom did not let us drink soft drinks for most of the time, only occasionally maybe that is why until now we still have strong healthy teeth.
I guess I would just let me friend look up for the site you have given, so she could discover herself what are the harmful effects of this soft drink to our body specially the young one.

Soft drinks are not good for children. They are not "good" for adults. The acidity in a soda is not the same as the acidity in fruit juice.

That is true. Even adults should not really drink a lot of softdrinks or should not drink too often. It may cause a lot of health problems later on. Much more to kids since they are still very fragile.

Softdrinks are not good for anyone, especially kids. It's not just the acid in softdrinks. The health hazard of softdrinks has more to do with being carbonated. Carbonated drinks cause the body to lose calcium, so if the baby doesn't stop drinking softdrinks, he or she would surely not grow properly because his or her bones would be weak. Softdrinks also have a very high sugar content, especially colas, so the baby would be preparing to have diabetes at such an early age.
@angelajoy (1825)

And I would just like to add that I know this not only from research but based on my own experience. I used to drink a lot of softdrinks until I found out that I have calcium deficiency. I've been having problems with my teeth and bones for a long time, but I didn't know they were because of softdrinks. No matter how much I brush my teeth I still get cavities and my braces just won't work because my teeth are so weak. My bones, on the other hand, keep on making "crunching" sounds at the joints. One time my foot got stuck a bit on rocks and my toe's bone got dislocated! And these are all because I loved softdrinks. So please tell your friend my story and make her stop giving softdrinks to her child.

Hi jndlponti
Well two year olds drinking soda doesn't sound good at all, this is too young in my opinion, children get addicted to soft drinks very fast and they should not be allowed to have some until get a little older, well at least older than two years of course... it is much better if they give the child some natural fruit juices, way way better some soda and all... anyways have a nice day jndlponti!

basically, she believes that all things acidic are the same without even realizing that the acid which comes from juices are so darn different from that which comes from soda or softdrinks. Acids in general are bad for kids but then again she forgot the fact that the acid from juices are citric acid, etc which is very essential in protecting the kids from getting sick...

Yes which is needed for the child to be protected from getting flue viruses. I think she just want to give that reason for she do not know what is her main idea of giving such drink to her child. May it be snack time or meal time the child take a zip. Not just a zip but her own half glass of soda.

I would like to say that its not the best for them. If she is giving her baby juices as well, I am sure they're getting their daily amount needed for healthy growth. If it was just soda, then maybe I would worry they werent getting vitamins needed. I also worry about their teeth with all that sugar and acid. In a perfect world I would say no soda. Obviously its not a perfect world so I say dont worry about her. If he or she is growing, her teeth are okay, she's thriving and happy, then she's good. dl

I think there is a balance to everything in life. My son (3 yrs) drinks mostly water and milk but there are occassions for other things like juice and soda. I don't mind giving him a small glass of soda when we have pizza for dinner. I also don't mind giving him juice on occassion. I don't think it will harm him in such small amounts and he does not demand it. In fact, when you ask him what he wants to drink, he says water mostly or milk. I think if we deprive kids of things they tend to go over board when they are older. If we allow them free reign they take advantage. I try to teach my children balance, on all fronts.

Yes. that's it. Too much or too less of anything is also not good. Just a balance. Mine was just I was thinking it is not yet appropriate for her child or even my child to take soda because her child is just two years old and underweight. my baby just got one year old and surely not allowed of soda.I don not even give packed juice, I always prepare fresh juice since my child has a low red blood tissues. I just need to be careful what to feed her.

The same question I have on my mind. That is why I posted this because i am looking for anyone who would agree with my friends opinion that sodas is still okay for kids as long as it is not regularly, but my idea is that though maybe not as always but it is still a no no because her child is still too young for that.
But now I noticed everyone here agrees that soda is not good for a child even given "sometimes".
