How to test download speed of computer?

Hi friends, I take a new internet connection. My ISP told me that the download speed is 256 Kbps, but I feel it is not 256 Kbps. Could you help me, to know the speed of downloading from internet. There is any software, or online tool, or website that help me to know actual speed of my Internet connection. Thanks in Advance.

Hey you can check your speed of the internet connection using the http://www.scanmyspeed.com/ . It shows your uploading and downloading speed of your connection.

try to download a file of atleast 500mb capacity to test your connection to its extent then test your internet connection using the one provided by our friends here. that should give you a result roughly near what you expect it to be. thats how we normally tell to our customers before when i was a dsl technical support.

I always use speedtes.net but if I want a second opinion I use McAfee Internet connection speedometer, try this link, http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp
