Where oh where did Yaya go?

Little girl
With blond curls
And chubby cheeks.
Everyone listens
When she speaks.
Tall young woman
So mature,
Self assured yet insecure.
Funny, smart,
Won't let me sing.
Thinks she knows most everything.
Where is the child
I used to know?
Where oh where did Yaya go?
I was looking at Dearra in the car today, almost 13, looks so grown up and remembering the toddler. They grow up too fast...

bite your tongue at them turning 40 - I'll be in my late 70's when the first one turns 40...
Then again, I plan to live to at least 94!

Putting a brick on her head will not help either. I tried, he still grew up to about 6 ft. 7

Now why would you make me cry like that writing such a lovely poem?
No Brownies for you.. I haven't cried my eyes out in years
My little nieces are only 7 but it was just yesterday that they were newborns.. next thing you know they'll be bringing some tattooed body, tall freak who smokes like a chimney and claiming they are "in love"... really dreading the teenage years for them...

Feels like there is a warning and reminder for me somewhere here....a warning that kids are gifts that are fragile and a reminder that time does fly. This is a poem that also reminds us that although we are not metamorphic creature, we do have radical changes going on after graduating from elementary school.

This is probably where your mama butts in and asks you when you are going to find yourself a nice girl! :-)

I love this post, but how does Dearra feel about it? Is she shy about the times that you talk about her online. I think you have real talent, Dawn.

She often asks, after something funny happens, if I am going to (or did) blog about it. I asked her once if she minded and she said no...

I have just spent a few days with two of our granddaughters. The younger one is 5 and sooooooooooo delightful. The 9 year old is too, but I can't believe how "old" she is. She is more like a 12-13 year old in so many ways, but not (thankfully) in others.
Dawn I know you thoroughly enjoy your children so you are going to have great memories - and more importantly, so will they. When your children range from 33 - 48 as mine do, the memories are still there and are precious.
They grow quickly, but we would complain if they didn't.

Dawn, did you have to remind me that I'll be 80 in just 7 years???!!!!! I've had trouble approaching every new decade but loved it when I reached it - but EIGHTY? - NO WAY!!! I never want to be eighty! That is old! I have just decided I am not having any more birthdays.

I'm addicted to your discussions....lol. So it's Yaya this time. Actually, when I watch my nieces and nephews, month after month and year after year, I see changes too. Progressive ones..suddenly, they have grown an inch here, an inch there. Oh babies, don't grow up so fast. Nice poem you've got there..

Yaya was doing her homework the other day and there's stuff I actually can't help her with, ie algebra and Spanish. Heck I'm having trouble with the word problems in the 3rd and 4th grade math. Soon the kids will be teaching ME!

My sister used to call me Yaya when she was a toddler...
They do grow up fast, I know, I can’t believe my daughter was once a little tiny baby who used to lie on my lower arm and puke down my back when I burped her! My girl does ballroom dancing and I watching her waltz the other with her high heeled ballroom shoes, she looked so grown up, I could not believe it! I have told to stop growing and threatened not to feed her anymore!
By the way mine won’t let me sing either!

Have you considered changing your career to be a poet? Children grow too fast that it seems only yesterday and all of a sudden they are adults. Well this is life. Others see us grow up. Now we see others grow up.

You discuss by putting into words so well. You can sharpen your skills by enrolling
into a story and poems writing course. May you have a gift in writing. Cheers.

In a blink, in the twinkling of an eye, the time passes us and we are left with the memories of them being babies, which they shall always be to us. Thanks for this little poem!

Me and my husband are really amazed about how our kids are growing up that fast and this also means that we're not getting any younger. Since we are both working we hired a caregiver to look after our kids, take them to school and picked them up. We are so lucky to have a trustworthy caregiver. She is so responsible and caring. She also helps me with household chores. In a span of one year, our yaya witnessed how fast our kids grow...physically plus how they are responding to the school's intervention program. Thanks to our yaya... she's simply the best!

wow dawnald thats a great poem. they do grow up so quick. My son is coming to see me this afternoon and I still remember him at age one when he was running after a leaf, and picked it up and looked it over so intently. now he is fifty and still looks over everything intently. a computer programmer but alas he is out of work. so sad. but one day soon perhaps.

Maybe he should pretend he's from India, everything IT seems to be outsourced there. But seriously, I hope he finds something soon. I hate this rotten economy!

Hi dawnald,
Yes children grow up so fast and I always refer to my niece and nephew as my babies, they are both in their thirties, they are twins, sometime they make me feel so old.

Oh yes how right you are. I have 2 kids, both boys, 10 an 6. The older one only needs a few inches to be as tall as myself. My younger son used to stand under the dining table and he can stand straight under it just right, now at 6 the table is up to his waist already. My husband jokes sometimes that in a few years time they will both be bringing their girlfriends at home to introduce to me. Oh no, please, I'm not ready yet.

When I was little, I thought time went by so slowly. Now I found that time flies soquickly. Especially when I look at my girl. She seemed to be a baby yesterday,

My kids are allowed to grow up as long as I don't grow old.
