Hi to all, I am just curious to know, Do you know what the origin of the name of your country or the places where you live from and it's meaning?
I live here in Philippines and the origin of the word Philippines was derived from King Philip II of Spain in the 16th century. The names of the places were call with many names such as Las Islas Filipinas, República Filipina or the Philippine Republic. It is only then during the period of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War, until the Commonwealth period, American colonial authorities referred to the country as the Philippine Islands, a translation of the original Spanish name. It was during the American period that the name Philippines began to appear, a name that has become its common name. The official name of the country is now Republic of the Philippines. While the city I live is call as the fort of stone or Cotabato, from the Maguindanaon words KUTA meaning fortress and WATO for stone, which means fortress of stones. other references info:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippines
How about you, Do you know the origin name of your country or the places where you currently live and what's behind the name?

I live in the bush in New South Wales. This is the land where the Kamillaroi Aborigines called home. They wandered around this vast area and where I live was called Billah-gah which means 'place of oaks'. I haven't seen many oaks but the land abounds with black cypress.

I'm in the U.S., and the word America I believe came from the explorer Amerigo Vespucci.
I was born and raised in the city of Manchester, New Hampshire, and both city and state were named for places in England, as is the case of a lot of places here in the United States. I'm sure there are few cities/towns that are unique to the U.S., except for the really strange/obscure names.

I live in Davao and it comes from the word three Bagobo subgroups when referring to Davao River, an essential waterway. While, The aboriginal Obos who inhabit the hinterlands of the region called the river, Davoh; the Clatta or Guiangans called it Duhwow, or Davau, and the Tagabawa Bagobos, Dabu. To the Obos, the word davoh also means a place"beyond the high grounds".ref:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davao_City

i am presently living here in Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu. i do not know where "Opon" came from which was the original name of Lapu-Lapu City but i am sure, the present name of this city came from our first national hero, Lapu-Lapu who fought against Magellan in 1721.
with Cebu, i also don't have the idea where does "Sugbu" came from or what does it mean.
but with Bulacan, my home province, i'm sure it came from the word "bulak", which is cotton.

hi neildc,
Yeah, it is obvious as Lapu Lapu is the one who killed Ferdinand Magellan in the battle of Mactan in Cebu and not the fish... So far Sugbu from my research is a group of community living in a fishing villages thus the name Cebu came from. Oh, now I know Bulacan is from cotton, maybe their are many cotton their in your home provinces that way it got it's name.

hello neelia!well, with the name of my country...you already say it there so i just share my province & town's name...
well, as you know i am from Laguna, and it was named after Laguna de Bay... having a number of lakes around...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laguna_%28province%29
and my town is Calamba, which they say came from the word 'kalan-banga'..and here's the story...
The name of the city comes from a legend that during the early time of the Spanish period in the country, two "guardias civil" or soldiers were lost and passing through what is now Calamba. The soldiers met a young lady who came from a river carrying a jar of water and a wooden stove. The soldiers unwittingly in Spanish language and in authoritative tone, to conceal the fact that they were lost, asked the local maiden the name of the place they were in. The lady, who speaks only her native language, naturally thought she was being interrogated about what she was carrying and nervously uttered "kalan-banga", meaning "clay stove" (kalan) and "water jar" (banga). Because the Spaniards could not pronounce it properly, the town has been called Calamba supposedly since then. This legend is immortalized with a large concrete water jar erected in the city plaza with the names of the city's barangays written on its surface. It is considered the World's Biggest "Claypot". This same jar is also found in the city's seal
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calamba_City
so that's it...

haha...yes that's really a nice view in my town and even more beautiful with me there...haha just kidding!
actually i am really happy that day to have a chance in posing there again after years of being away from my town...i feel like a tourist in my own town...huh!
anyway, have you been there? Dr. Jose Rizal's house is just near that place...and that's the most historical place in my town...
well, that's true...spanish colonialization is very obvious in our country...even the name of Laguna is with spanish origin...and even our surnames...sounds really spanish!

yup...
you could use it as a post card it is really a nice photos...
Nope, yet but i read and saw all the antique items still intact..including the house is preserved with pride...
yup...lot of surnames have Spanish sounding and wording too..since Spanish invades our country for more than 300 years thus the after effects is still visible..

hi ck,.. wow...and that is the legend of your places..I see the biggest clay pot with ck in there modeling for the city of Calamba...
that is beautiful scenes and Calamba is very rich in cultures and historical events in the past where national Jose Rizal heroes is born there..now i know kalan and banga..thus it becomes Calamba...So it is still a Spanish word and the same with the name of our country since obviously the names comes for Spanish as the country is under their invasion. Thus, most town in the Philippines have origin words from Sanish...

Hi,i hails from India and India called also as Bharatadesam.Bharatadesam name came because of the king,Bharath who ruled this country long time.Where as the name India came like this-The name India may refer to either the region of Greater India (the Indian subcontinent)..or to the contemporary Republic of India in there. well the term is supposedly derived from the name of the Sindhu (Indus) river and has been in use in Greek since Herodotus (4th century BC). this term appears in old English in the 9th century..n again in modern English since the 17th century....thus the name can be safely said to have been introduced by the English.
Have a nice time.

Hi there! I am a Filipino myself and I have to applaud you about your wide knowledge of our country's name. Do you know that some Filipino sociologist was not really in agreement with our Country's name. Basically their argument came from the originality of the word which you already mentioned was came from the Spaniards. Using it they say we still under their influence. They thought it is more proper to use some of native languages like 'Maharlika' which doesn't sound like a country name does it?
On the other hand, my Provincial name is 'Batangas' derived from the word 'Batang' which I do not know excatly the meaning. And my town is 'Bauan' which was derived from the word 'bawang' that describes the geographical location of our place.

Hi joy,
Well, that is already part of the history and i also know their are many lawmaker who propose to change the name of our country as citing for the origin sources is from a foreign country. Thus, many do not like it as they say even though we are no longer under the occupation of the foreign invasion, lot of influences is still left thus wanting it to be eliminated thus for hundred years but the name retain itself.
Well, thanks for sharing now from the name of your places origin and others may know its meaning. Thanks for responding.

I live in Ecuador, the city i live is Guayaquil. Now im not really sure(im 90% sure im right), but Ecuador is named after the equator(the imaginary line that divides the equally the northern and the southern hemispheres). In fact the center of the world is located in here.
Now my city is called Guayaquil because of a story of two native american lovers called "Guayas" and "Quil"(dont really remember the story, and its a legend so its not all entirely true anyway). The actual name is Santiago de Guayaquil. Other cities in america have been name after santiago(which was one of the direct disciples of Jesus).

I know that my city Conyers used to be train stop a watering post on the way to Covington through to Augusta an Marthasvile which was later renamed Atlanta, this place was actually pretty much a giant brothel, until a church mob ran them off an they all went to Covington.
Actually this place was occupied by mound building native americans indians, the down the street from me known as Hightower Trail was once known as the Great Indian Road, the Cherokee an the Muscogee an Creek lived near each other at the border later that area was settled an changed to Hightower Trail.
During the Civil War the residents fled because it was a major train stop, but Sherman never harmed Conyers.
This place has mostly been about agriculture, it is one of the few places you can find though where a big city is only 15 mins away from farm animals, during the 1996 Olympics the Equestrians events were held here at a newly built Georgia HorsePark, which caused major growth for the whole area, restaurants, hotels, just major growth city been much more crowded since 96.
I can also tell you just down the street, a Lady that claimed to see the Virgin Mary used to live here an people all over the world would come here to bottle her well water for healing powers, which is funny cause we all share the same underground river for the wells around here...lol
An well I know my county Rockdale is named after rocks because of the rocks that are present here huge ones, that are formed from being so close to Stone Mountain, anyways there was a huge one next to this Church called Rockdale Baptist Church, an later is was name after this church.
The name Conyers was from a rich powerful banker from Covington

hi solared,
That is a good story from the origin of your city. I first know about your city when the olympic was held in your city. So good your city is few kilometer distance only from farm. So all the settlers could both enjoy to live in a city or country life as each other is not far. Well, that is a fanatic story and thus many would believe the woman and other may not believe her claim. The importance the people know to recognize God and learn to respect each other irregardless of cultures, races or religion. So your city is name from a wealthy person, now I know. Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day!
