Is owning more than 1 Tv set at home a luxury or necessity nowadays?

I have 3 tv sets in the house. One is rarely used but the other 2 are used almost everyday. I don't consider it a luxury becaue I don't want to be disturbed when I watch the news and other good documentaries. It is more of a necessity in my case. How about you? Do you own more than one? Is it a neccesity?

watching tv channels on laptop - watching movies and other shows on laptop
We only have one tv set in the house. It is placed in the living room where everyone can use. We don't need an extra tv set as almost all of us are out of the house the whole day (only the house helper is left to use it, hahaha). When evening comes, we generally watch the same shows, if they watch at all. The children are into their own laptops most of the time and use them for watching tv shows, too.

The family that "watch tv together, stays together" hahaha. Yes children would rather use their laptops than watch the programs on tv. Househelpers actually have more tv watching hours than the homeowners. cheers!

I think that owning more than one TV is in the constitution somewhere now. Right between free speach and homeland national security. TV's have turned people into robots. And while your being entertained, they have free reign over this once wonderful country.

TV's have turned people into robots Sadly that is so true....which is why I'm glad that my teens both have been raised to have other interests too...So few kids their age are cool with reading books or doing art type things (painting, drawing etc)...it really is a shame and a bigger shame that so many parents DON'T encourage other things over comps and tvs ya know..

hello manong05, same thing here. we have 3 tv sets in the house too. i think it is necessity for kids have different tv shows to watch and so with me and my myife for that matter. we like to watch our own shows and don't like to be disturbed for that matter. the only time we are watching the same is when we are watching a rented movie. that we don't need to argue.

Hi robert. Yes I agree with you that often the reason why families watch tv together is when they are watching DVDs. Otherwise they are watching their own favorites which varies from children to adult. cheers!

I think its a necessity than luxury because you don't want to start a fight with your wife or husband or other family members when all of you wants to watch in different channels at the same time.

I agree that there are cases where arguing for which tv program to watch can cause misunderstanding and quarrel in the family making an extra TV set a necessity. cheers!

we have 3 tv sets also though we are not in any way rich people. so i guess it is not luxury. cause it is so useful among other appliances in the house that we use. so i love to buy another one. LOL. though i think that the 4th one will be considered already a luxury than a necessity as we don't have any more place or corner in the house to place that 4th one if we plan to buy a new one. our tv's are mostly those bulky or big ones. i want to buy the flat screen thin tv's that can easily be carried anywhere with just one hand. unlike the bulky ones that we have at home right now. and i like the new ones as they have better screen display if not as good as our tv now. i love the new ones as they save a lot of space as we need more space in our home.

Yes, the LCD types are much thinner and with good picture resolution not to mention the little electricity they consume. So in case you find it necessary to get your 4th one LOL get those thin and flat ones. enjoy!

Hi manong. Well, I think now its become necessity for family especially who have big family and live at the city. Everyone have their own taste of channel, so sometime its become a necessity to make sure everyone satisfied. Well, in my home we have 3 tv sets too. One in the room, one at the hall, and one at the kitchen.

Yes the size of the family in many ways will determine whether adding an extra TV set will be a luxury or neccesity. In many homes it has become more of a neccesity. cheers!

If you are living in a big family then I would say it's a neccessity! A single tv works for me and I always look at having a tv as a luxury! There are lots of families with children and I would say that it's pretty common now that each child may have a tv in their bedrooms. I need a television as I would not be able to live without one, it's almost like we have come to rely on these contraptions and why not? I think that the creation of the tv is the best thing to happen this century! Andrew

I agree with you Andrew that it is one of the greatest contraptions. It has revolutionized people's lifestyles. It helps us to be constantly in touch with our surroundings and know what is going on. cheers!

I have two TVs at home, one in the living room and one in my bedroom. It is a luxury because we can actually go on with our lives without it. Of course we need to know the current news, but we can find that on the newspaper, from the internet and from other kinds of media. But it is one of those nice-to-haves that most of us can't go without, as it is one form of passive entertainment that everyone is just so happy to take part.

If owning an extra set doesn't really meet a specific need and can go without, then that definitely is a luxury. LOL enjoy life!

I agree with you that it is actually for the sake of the kids that parents are buying extra sets. They also don't want to be disturbed the same way with adults. cheers!

Yes, we do own more than one t.v. set. I guess it would be a necessity if you have a really large family and they all can't agree to what show they want to watch. I guess it would be a luxury if you have a small family or just don't watch t.v. that much. I personally see it as a luxury.

Yes, the size of the family, in a way, will determine whether it is a luxury or a neccesity. When there are many kids around, it's difficult not to have one extra set, at least. enjoy!
26 Oct 09
I don't think it's either, I think that a second television is just something that most people have. Most people have a Television in both their lounge and their bedroom. TV's have become so cheap that you can easily pick up a smaller one for less than £100. I think most people who have more than one TV in the house will have one smaller one.

That's true. Additional tv sets are mostly not the big expensive ones and normally are the cheaper and smaller ones. Here in the Philippines there are a number of stores that sell used but still good units and many go to these stores when they see a need for an extra tv set. Prices are way way below 100 pounds. cheers!

For me it is still a luxury. Although we have three televisions in our house, the other two are rarely or not used as often as the other one. Television time is also a family bonding time in our home. We enjoy watching tv together, and if one prefers to watch another show, that is the purpose of the other televisions hahaha

I watch only those informative shows which upgraded my mind. I also watch the tv for the news and current events just to cope up with whats happening in my surroundings and the world. So, I can call it a necessity. But when I'm watching a movie and other stuffs in the tv, the necessity become luxury. Other members of the household prefers to watch soap operas and other stuff on the tv. Its a luxury for them. As I compare it, having more than one tv in the house makes it really a luxury for most of us. Not only for me but for the entire household members. Not to mention, hooking a cable on it.

Yes, the number of people in the household and their watching habits will say if it is indeed a luxury or neccesity. It may be a luxury to some but to others it meets a specific and valid need making them a neccesity. enjoy!

Although I believe it is a luxury if you live by yourself/with a partner, my personal opinion is that if you live in a household with several residents (such as family and room-mates, for example), having multiple television sets becomes a necessity. By yourself or with partner, it isn't too difficult to agree on what to watch and at what time. However, as the number of people increases, the tastes and preferences of television becomes more diverse, and, as I've learnt from many years of first-hand experience, it is practically impossible to find a programme that EVERYBODY is interested in or is willing to watch the television at the same time.

It really is a case to case basis, isn't it. Yes I agree with you, it's difficult to find a program that everybody is interested in, and I am speaking from experience. LOL enjoy life!

Hi mangong: That depends on the situation and the family members in your house. In my case we have three tvs in my house: one for my parents, one for my eldest brother that is more independent since last year and he bought it to have more privacy and one for the rest of the family.

Yes, there are situations where we really need more than one and it can hardly be considered as a luxury. Some people want their own privacy in watching programs and if they can afford to buy an extra set anyway, why not? cheers!

I don't think it's luxurious to own more than 1 TV set at home. We actually have 4. Hehe.. :) We have one in the master's bedroom, one at my 3-yr old daughter's room, one at the dining area & the last is in the living room. We're after the convenience of being able to watch TV wherever we want to, may it be while eating dinner, when about to go to sleep, or when house guests fill the living room. And having a toddler at home who insists on watching her "favorite characters" on TV/DVD most of the time, having another TV set will save us from watching Barney & Dora for the nth time! =)

If you have kids, especially younger ones, it is an absolute necessity. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those moms that rely on a tv to babysit my children. But I want to watch grown up tv sometimes to you know? There are only so many episodes of spongebob squarepants I can take. So that makes having more than one tv absolutely necessary... for my sanity.
