Have a modem question

I recently purchased a Dell Lattitude laptop, and found that it does not have an internal modem installed.
Through my hunting and clicking, etc., I did get a message showing the name of a modem, but the message beside it said: “not present.” {seems weird to me}
Is it possible to use my desktop {not a dell}, to download a modem unto a cd and then install in my laptop?
Thanks

A modem is hardware, not software, so you can't 'download' a modem!
Your Dell must be really quite old not to have a built-in modem. First, check out the physical ports. It is almost certain to have a Network port (I think that all laptops back to about 1995 had that facility). The network (T45) connection/port is rather larger than the modem/phone connection, though they are a similar shaped hole.
The other way of checking is to go to My Computer/Properties/Devices and to look to see what is listed. A modem should be one of the items.
External modems (which you either plug into the PCMCIA card slot or into a spare USB port) are available.
If you tell me what model/serial # your laptop is, I can check what it should come with.

Modems, like other peripherals do need drivers (software) and will not work without them. Usually these drivers come with Windows and Windows XP should have the necessary files for most modems (and almost any other hardware device produced in or before 2007).
If the modem hardware/software in your computer has been disabled, it may only require reinstalling (which, unless Windows software/files has been deleted, is simply a matter of restoring/reactivating the drivers).
I have to assume that you bought your Dell Laptop second-hand (otherwise all of the functions would be available)

These days the only real uses for a modem are:
1) If you use a dial-up connection to the Internet (and connect your phone line to the PC with a phone extension cable)
2) If you want to use your PC as a fax machine.
Nearly all Internet connections these days are either wired (using a network/T45 cable between your 'hub' - usually supplied by your Internet provider/phone/cable company) or wireless. You will still have a hub but the connection will be through a wireless network connection (built in to most laptops these days) or through a wireless card which is plugged into the PCs PCMCIA or USB port.

Basic thing is every laptop comes along with internal modem port but you may miss drivers for the same.. some times you may not get those from the site or source. To solve this pleas refer this technical post link http://techrefer.blogspot.com/2009/10/download-correct-drivers-for-unknown.html
It may solve your problem. There is was clearly explained how to get drivers for unknown devices.

I looked on the bottem of this laptop (not a new one / used) and it is a Lattitude C600/C500
I checked out the control panel modems, etc., and the following statement was there:
3 COM 56k V.90 mini PCI modem not present
For those of you that recommend that I go out to the internet to download - - that isn't possible 'without' a modem in it.
I'm not real savvy on terminology, but am trying to learn, so some of what is above, I don't have the understanding on what is being suggested.
I purchased this laptop as a secondary for a "dialup" internet service to be installed, and to use it for a variety of purposes.
It does have the Windows XP Home Edition installed.
I'll re-check postings here over the next few days. I appreciate all of the input all of you are providing - - thanks

All modem needs drivers to motivate. You are able to find a DVD included in the soft bag given by Dell. The modem driver are in it.Install it and you can use your modem.

I am sure it has a modem, unless it is really they are the newest ones I guess. Maybe your drive got uninstalled.
Check in device manager and see whether the hardware is present or not and try to update the driver from there. Otherwise, check the Dell site and try to find the modem type. Then you can download the driver from Dell's website.

yes ofcourse, you can look and download the driver for your dell laptop's modem using your desktop or any other pc, you can burn it on a cd or just simply copy it to any flash drive then transfer it to your dell laptop or just simply run or browse it from there when you are installing the modem.

i guess what you are trying to say it that you laptop doe not have the program to run your laptop modem. any usb device will do, no need for a cd. A Modem installer is usually free to download, just make sure you scan with an updated anti virus, before you transfer and RUN the file to your brand new laptop.
