How many of you still hand wash your clothes ? I know now days that the maximum number of people use only the washing machine to wash their clothes. But in our country, India, there are still a large number of people who still wash their clothes regularly by hand. How about you.

Hi. rameshkumaar57. My husband washes our clothing by the washing machine. The only time that I or him will wash clothing by our hands is when we are washing something delicate that can't be washed into the washing machine. Or when we have ran out of clean clothing that we need to wear. That is when I or him will wash clothing on our hands then.

This discussion was started more than 2 years back, and even now in our country, the same trend is continuing. Of course it has improved a little, but most of the houses do not have a washing machine as well as there is shortage of running water for the washing machine to work, and finally, the last but not the least, now days we have got eratic power supply with one to two hours of load shedding, (in other words compulsury power cut) everyday.
Any how, I have never washed my clothes in the washing machine, and as a matter of fact I do not even know how to use it. It is my wife and mother who does all the washing either by hand, or if everything is smooth by the washing machine.

I do not know how many people out there who would still wash their clothes by hand even though I do not know why they would still do it that way, even though I am sure it saves a lot of energy instead of using a washing machine, but it seems like it would be a whole lot of work, and I definitely wash clothes in a washing machine, and I do not think I would ever want to do it by hand, because it would take up more time, and me and my wife can put the clothes in the washer, and then do other things while they are washing of so we can accomplish a lot of things, since I do not always have a lot of days off,so we have to do what we can when I am off.

Well, Hellcowboy, not everybody is rich in my country, to afford a washing machine. In places like India, washing machine is considered a luxury rather than a necessity.
Thanks for the response.

With two kids and tons of clothes to wash I would have to say I use the machine unless the tag says other wise. And even then sometimes when it says to hand wash I throw it in on the gentle cycle. Shame on me! Modern technology sure has made us all lazy.

I am happy to note that some body is brave enough to acknowledge, that she has become lazy because of the modern gadgets and technology.

Yes I will surely admit it I mean have you seen that test about how many people will use the wheelchair ramp instead of the stairs right next to them. Things like elevators and other stuff have really made us lazy, tv remotes, dishwashers, which I don't have one of those lol. It is bad. I sometimes wish we could go back to simpler times.

Yes friend you are correct. I still used to wash my clothes in hand. I think it is the best way to get out of dirt when compared to machines.

You are absolutely right on this point. Only when we wash the clothes in hand, that the dirt is got out, particularly in the collars as well in the cuffs.
Thanks for the response.

I wash my clothes in a washer. However, here in the USA, many people wash by hand. Not everyone can afford them. Some countries do it more though, then us I think.

oh yes, Ramesh, there are so many people in India who wash their clothes by hand. Washing machines are still not cheap here and coupled with the electricity costs, its does come down to a tidy sum for most families. Another reason is that we have maids here in India who do a lot of our household chores and another reason is steady supply of online water which is not there in many houses! So our women have to continue breaking their backs over tubs of clothes.
Personally, the washing machine is one gadget without which I cannot live. Its one of the main things in my house which if broke, would break me too LOL…I have a fully automatic 5.5 kg washing machine at home and though it cost me quite a good sum, yet it was worth the investment. But I must say that nothing beats the human hand…the washing machine cannot really make our clothes sparkling clean and there are traces of dirt, specially on kids and men’s clothes on cuffs and collars. These places I sometimes scrub with a brush, before putting them in the machine.

Thanks for the response sudipta. Of course, I did not bring in the maid factor,in this discussion. The reason being not everybody can afford a maid today in India. We are still lucky to have a maid who washes our clothes everyday by hand. Even though we have a old fashioned washing machine, my wife and my mother are not satisfied with its washing. We wash only the bed sheets and heavy curtains in that machine. The rest of the clothes are taken care of the maid.

Hand washing clothes would take much too time. I'm not a big fan of doing laundry and I find it to be quite an annoyance at times. But when I do, I'd much rather do it with a machine. Just put the clothes in and let the water and power do the work. Do lots of people still hand wash clothes? I would think this would wear down clothes a lot faster than a washing machine.

we wash our clothes with our hands, mostly a worker washes it actually a washer woman and we pay her for it. even if she does not come we hand wash the clothes ourself. due to the water problem as we have a hand pump, we cannot use a washing machine even if we want to use it.

Well we do have washing machines at home but my mom have made it compulsory to hand wash my clothes. Sometimes i do feel lazy and put time in machine but most of the times i wash them myself only. At first i used to think why is she asking me to do this. But now i know she wants to add some good habits in me .

Good, we need more people like your mother. Mothers always pamper their children. I do not find fault in this, at the same time she has to teach them some good habits also. Thanks for the response.

Arman, even if you have a washing machine, just think of the power it consumes. And the way the electricity is charged in India, it is always better to handwash the clothes.

In our country, Philippines, some are not satisfied of washing machine results. In our household, I select only those bed covers, linens, towels and curtains to be washed using the machine but for everyday clothings, I prefer hand wash. Sometimes, I instruct the washer to hand wash towels after coming from the machine.Probably, I got this attitude from my mother who washes clothes using washing machine and then hand wash it afterwards.

Looks like everyone has look up on the washing machines to do their laundry. People here no longer uses their hands to wash their clothes. Life has been too busy for many people in this rat race world that they find the use of washing machines as the most convenient way to beat the time. All they need to do is just dump their dirty cloths in the machine while they attend to other things. For me I have long forgotten how to wash my clothes with my bare hands. I have been too dependent on the washing machines for ages.

I don't hand wash my clothes anymore. Washing machines are more efficient now...they have option for "hand wash" so it washes the clothes in gentle cycle and I don't have to worry about my clothes getting ruined. It's the dryer that ruins the clothes so I make it a point to hang my clothes to dry if they are 100% cotton to avoid shrinking. I also hang them if they have delicate designs, or beads or studs. I also use protective wash bags for this type of clothes. I don't think I'll ever go back to hand washing again unless we run out of electricity.

There are some clothes that I wash by hands but usually we used the washing machine specially in washing those bedsheet, jeans and jackets, no way you will finish it all on time if you will wash it all by your hands. But I prefer washing by hands if I have few laundry, washing by hand is more gentle on the clothes and is much effective in taking out all the dirt for me.

Hi, i´m from Uruguay, and in my country i think the washing machine wins by far, but in personal case, i have moved recently to my own house, without a washing machine of my own, and hand washing isn´t to much of a trouble, i find it a better way to wash clothes, because it´s a more accurate way to do the work, if a spot it´s stained or it has dirt, the washing machine may not remove it completely, but by hand it comes out without much struggle.
The only thing that perhaps made me miss the machine are jeans, because of the amount of time it takes to dry it.
But in general i prefer the hand wash, and even if in my house we´re only to persons, i personally know other families, with some numbers around 5 to 6 who still do wash by hand only.
Of course it´s a matter of customs.
By the way i love the fabrics of indian clothes! i wouldn´t put them in a washing machine any way.
