How many times have you been introduced to someone for the first time and not even one minute later you cannot remember their name. This is an example of listening and not hearing. The key is to repeat the name several times out loud in conversation in the next few minutes.

Active listening, as it is called, does take a great deal of skill and practice. First, don't talk while the other person is talking, take the time to really listen to what they are saying. Concentrate on what they are telling you instead of thinking about your response. Only when they have finished speaking and you really believe you have heard what they are saying, should you speak. Unless you truly listen to what they are saying, you cannot possibly understand the message. Try it a few times with your friends and you will see what I mean.

I guess it is a case of trying to be more interested in other people, as I believe you have to be genuine and not faking interest...its good to take interest in other people as it is all a learning thing....
