Wireless or Wired Internet Connection: Which do you use??

Do you prefer a wireless internet connection or a wired connection? Both have their pros and cons. Wireless has the convenience of not being tethered to the router but wired connections are more secure and are do not loose speed/quality with increased distance from the router (just a little extra cord). What say you? Do you use wireless, wired, or both like I do? Why do you choose one over the other?

Now, although I am using a wireless Internet connection, I prefer the wired connection.
You see, in my dormitory, there are more than 5 friends who surf the Internet, so, a wired connection is not enough for us and we have to use the wireless Internet connection. A wireless Internet connectiong is not perfect for the speed can be decreased in a wireless connection for the signal quality is decreased in the process of signal transmission. At the same time, the radiation of wireless Internet connection equipment really do harm to our health.
So, wired connection is a better choice for me.

Could you speak more on the radiation you mentioned? It's my understanding that the signals are in the form of radio waves. I know prolonged exposure to radiation like microwaves can be harmful but radio waves? Radio stations are outputting radio waves like mad, are they the same type you speak of?

well and good...i think this discussion is all about wired or wireless internet connection and not the engineering statistics of microwaves and radio waves...
if you are good in Electronics and Communication Engineering, just trya doctorate in Microwaves....i'm really afraid whether you could locate a klystron amplifier and whether you identify a Magic Tee and an isolator....

I use both actually. I have my desktop PC connected directly and I use that for some things but I also have a wireless network so I can use my laptop anywhere in the house including out on my patio. I love the convenience of not being restricted to one location. The direct network connection definitely is the best for speed, but I actually get really good performance for general surfing with my wireless laptop. If I was doing any big downloads or streaming large video files though, I use the desktop and the wired connection. Of course, your internet performance will depend on your type of service also, DSL is good but cable is even better and the performance of both depend on your location and distance from their equipment. If I had to choose only one type of connection though, I would go with the wired connection for sure.

Well said, Millertime. Like I said on my reply to this discussion, both wired and wireless connections have their own advantages and disadvantages over the other. It's a matter of identifying your reasons first before deciding which to use. As for me, I use both as well. Wired at the office and home, wireless anywhere else.

I used both. My desktop at home is using wired connection and my laptop uses the wireless connection. I find both to be very convenient to use. For my desktop since I do not move the desktop very often then the most practicable means to use is wired. But for my laptop since it is mobile I tend to use the wireless for convenience and practicality.

I normally do what you do. I have my desktop wired because if I am downloading anything or doing anything bandwidth intensive I need to have that stable connection and a good quality signal. Normally I use wireless with the laptop so I can move through the house but I've been having problems with the router so I have been stuck to the router by a annoying blue Ethernet cable. But hey, what can ya do.

I prefer a wireless connection as you can use the internet anytime, anywhere. I bring my laptop when I go on holidays and use it in the car or when I go camping I use it. I rarely lose my connection although sometimes it does slow a little when I'm in a small country town.
I found costs to be the same as wired but no need to have a home phone which saves a lot of money.

I find that wireless access gives me more flexibility. All I need is a cable modem and a good wireless router and I am all set. I use the Motorola modem and Asus router. Here is a good writeup:

I have wireless internnet for a year now and i love it. I don't have to worry anymore about the cord being long enough, when i want to use my laptop on the balcony. So i love using wireless internet.

My internet connection is wifi and this is not good. It always interrupted that connection when there is a storm or typhoon.
I prefer wired connection where the speed cannot be varied depending on the service provider. Wired is not always interrupted not like wifi that suffer a lot intermittent connection and always no connectivity...

I have a wired connection and I perfer to stay wired. the reasones are simple. such as the ones you have just stated. a wired connection is secure, does not dimish in quality and speed. I do not feel to conforable with the wireless conection becase too many things can intefer with the conectoion. staying wired is the most suitible for my needs and I do not plan to change any time soon.

Cabled all the way! There's simply too many security issues with wireless connections that I'd rather not deal with..

I use both: wireless for my laptop and wired for my desktop.
Both connections are important to me and the work I do.

It mostly depends on what you need, the lifestyle you live, the work habits you have, etc. If mobility is of great importance (travel a lot, always in meetings, etc), wireless connection is no doubt the best choice. If you want the internet to be faster (for streaming, downloading/uploading, etc.) and secure (does not easily breaks connection), wired network is much preferable.
There are advantages and disadvantages for both types of network connections. Before choosing, you must first identify your reasons. Below are some guide questions I've formulated for myself back when I was in college.
1. Do you give much importance to mobility? If using a desktop, then mobility is out of the question.
2. Do you want very fast connections?
3. Where would you want to use the internet? Downloading/uploading, audio/video streaming, research, etc.?
4. How much are you willing to pay for the type of connection you want?
Speaking for myself, I prefer wired network at the office for faster connectivity. It is imperative since I would want to work faster, browse or use network resources at a fast pace. For liesure times, i.e. sipping a cup at a coffee shop, wireless network is good to use.

I prefer using wired internet connection actually because the connection works a lot faster for me with wired then wireless since I get a bad signal. So thats pretty much why I prefer using wired connection which im happy we finally got working because it was never working before so I could not use it.

I use both but I do like the wired as it is more secure and on my laptop, it is less on battery. If it is wireless, it drains my laptop. So I prefer wired.
