I think Spongebob is such a likeable character because he represents what we as adults wish to be (or perhaps even what our inner childs are like) - innocent, optimistic, cheerful, and blissfully naive.

Good answer, and so true! I think that is why he is so likeable too!

For me, Spongebob fills a hole that has existed since Looney Tunes stopped being shown. Cartoons that include the impossible in a dreamworld scenario are very relaxing and can be used for inciting lucid dreams. Like cutting a branch on a tree in order to catch whoever is at the end of the branch and then the tree falls down instead. The Roadrunner Show was good for that craziness as well.
For too many years, the producers of cartoons lost the plot, Spongebob is getting back to basics, we just want to laugh, it works well for me.

maybe because he is optimistic and he teaches us the lesson that we should just laugh about our misfortune...? That's just what I think.

There is a saying that Spongebob is stoners and six year olds. I do not watch this show but from what I have seen, it's pretty weird. I will watch it when it is on next. my ex boyfriend had a pair of Spongebob boxer shorts and my friend's email address contains a reference to Spongebob. We are all in our twenties. He's a very popular fellow!

My daughter who turns 4 in June is a HUGE Sponge Bob fanatic! For her 3rd birthday last year I had Sponge Bob everything, the cake, the plates, the cups, the napkins, the noise makers, the hats, the table cloth, and I had yellow forks and yellow balloons! At first I started watching the show with her for her, but then I really started to like it too! I think it is because Sponge Bob is so weird, whacky, and crazy, BUT he is always himself and sticks up for what he believes in no matter what! I think the kids like him so much because he certainly acts like a kid (trapped in a some what adults body)! I say that because he has to work, that is about the only adult thing he does though!

He lives in a pineapple under the sea, something that I think is peculiar, atleast to me. Lol, sorry I had to rhyme. In any case, I am not sure why he is very popular but I think that it's a great show, just not suitable for all ages. I guess it's just Patrick and Spongebob's antics, Squidward's annoyance and he thinking so highly of himself, Mr. Krabs being a penny pincher, Sandy being a squirrel who lives under the sea and is a scientist... Larry's studness.

I am a big fan of television and me and my wife almost always watch television before we go to bed,and usually when we are eating, and when we are watching new shows, and me and my wife both like the show SpongeBobSquarePants, because it is a funny show and it has a lot of things you can learn from it,like that if someone is mean to you,you should always have a positive attitude like when Squidward is mean to Spongebob, and that you should always treat your best friend like he is special and never do anything to risk the friendship, which Spongebob would do anything for Patrick and he would never do anything to hurt him or their friendship.

I think everyone loves Spongebob because not only is he cute but he is also sweet and innocent. I have always notice that despite Squidward's grumpiness towards him, he will always still think of Squidward as a friend. The fact that he sees the goodness in everyone and still be silly about it makes him endearing to a lot of us. Children are like that and I guess we all want to release the inner child in us.
