Which do you prefer, roads with toll charges or roads without toll charges?

Toll Roads - Toll roads could be publicly or privately own which require passing motorist to pay for the toll fees.

Toll roads could either be own by government and privately operated system which charges toll fees to passing motorist by means of paying coins, card slots etc... In my country to avoid traffic congestion many driver prefer to use toll roads for more convenient and fastest way to reach their destination on time. The toll fees are used by the government as added revenues and uses in maintaining the existing roads, toll structures, and its staffs. However their are lots of cons and pros in using toll roads. The problem with paying toll fees have been widely protested with frequent rise in fees that have economic impact, resulting in reduced productivity and lost of time. How about you, What are your experience in using toll roads? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of using toll roads and paying toll fees? Kindly share your opinion. thanks

Call me naive but Im actually sort of fascinate by toll gates. I know that there are different kinds of them. There are those with operators and there are those where you drop the coins yourself. What Im most fascinated about are the kinds where there are no operators. Everything is automatic. I think that those are operated with sensors wherein the driver drops in his fee, the computer tells the sensor that the current car in sight has paid, then the gate just opens itself. Anyway, going back to your question, roads with toll charges are the most convenient roads to take for convenience and faster time. I think it would take twice that transportation time if the long road was taken. It sure can make for a good scenic roadtrip but for someone who is in a hurry to go to work, using roads with toll charges are probably the best way to go. It kinda regulate traffic a bit since cars will be forced to stop at points and not just speed up all over the lanes and congest crossings. A disadvantage would be one that you mentioned. They do have the power to increase the rates. However, as long as the rates are still within reason, then those roads would be more beneficial to motorists.

hi bj, Yeah, and they are electronic sensor system where the car with a tag card could pass in the toll booth without having to pay for the tickets they make the driver to pass the areas quickly and smoothly. I think i other countries as i have read those driver who use toll roads have their fee billed every end of the month thus they have not to worry to pay for every time they enter the toll roads. And toll roads are more wide in terms of the common paralle roads which have been built by the government then any kinds of transportation is allow to pass by causing built up of traffic which is very annoying causing a lot of headache not only to drivers but also to the commuter causing delay in their appointment.. and that is why the toll roads are built to lessen the main roads traffic and for those who could afford could enjoy using the roads which are more safer, shorter and faster routes then with less tendency for the passing motorist to involve in an accident. The toll rates hike is what renders the toll roads inadvisable to those who like to saves a lot, they have no choice but to pay for it as in every comfort their is a price to pay...

Tag cards huh? Havent seen one, I think.LOL I have heard of that hike in the news. I just wasnt able to catch just how much peso will be increased to the fee. It is indeed such a price to pay for convenience. It seems like taking advantage of such conveniences are actually privileges to those who can afford it. If only there was enough time in a day for taking the long road, it could help save some bit of cash to pay for the next meal.

Those new technology is not yet accessible in our country but in international toll operators from other country the tag is already attach to each car as they pass the toll booth it would open as the sensor read it with no need to pay for the driver to pay the ticket as they are billed every months such as in the place of Texas, USA, in Japan and in other countries it is already implemented... Yeah, the toll fees always increase and the toll operators alibi they have to maintain the roads, pay for maintenance and staffs. Then, their are almost half of the staff if I am not mistaken are demoted from their jobs as the company cost cutting.

Toll roads would have better road management, there would be traffic officers scattered and patrolling roads and the vicinity. that is SAFETY DRIVING AND SECURITY. i say the government is to blame for having these toll rates approved, but on the other side such toll fees generate jobs and improvements on our roads and highways.

Yeah, and that is the wish most of the driver and commuters as well.. all the power to lower the toll fees is definitely fall on the hands of the government but they could not do much as they are also benefiting from those internation toll operators are renting the roads paying taxes aside from those other benefits.

the government spends trillions on i dont know where and they cant maintain two major highways, SLEX and NLEX, so they asked for foreign investors, SO THIS TURNS OUT TO BE BUSINESS TO THEM NOT A SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE , they get some percents for their pockets thats why they cant lower the toll, that is why the government cannot intervene. they will pay for that come election day.

We have none around here and hope it stays that way and we dont travel the Interstaes around town use the surface streets less accidents on them. Poeple think they are on a raceway with the intersta roads around this town!

hi lakota, Whew, that is very costly especially if the routes is not a one way roads but have to pass along many toll booth but it is not necessary to pay if you know other free roads then have to pass along with it. It is a good thing their is no toll roads in your areas which could be less expensive to travel. Yeah, most of the private cars do car racing in toll roads as their a few quite numbers of motorist they could held those car racing games...

Though there are charges toll roads are quite safer for motorist as there are guards, monitoring the flow and the convenience of the motorists. The sides of the roads were landscaped and trees were planted along the way, that motorists from congested places could breath fresh and cool air. The roads are clean and signs are orderly. Speed is being monitored so less vehicular accidents. Drivers are quite disciplined. So i prefer to roads with charges.

hi bing, Toll fees are good when it is quite reasonable as you mention and in my country the entry and exit toll fees varies exclusively intended for one entry and the driver have to pay again in the next toll roads along the way. Citing the increases in gas fuels it is sometimes expensive but still prefer having a short routes with less traffic. Thus, it is more safer to pass in toll roads for motorist who are on the rush. The only problem it is not only in free roads that have traffic sometimes because of collecting fees, motorist have to stop before proceeding and this slow down them. thanks

I live in Spain, and we've just driven back to the UK through France. By avoiding the toll roads, not only did we save over 80 euros, which is the equivalent of a tank of deisel for our camper van, we passed through some wonderful scenery on nice quiet roads. If I'm in a hurry, I'll use the toll roads, but I prefer to use non toll roads.

hi sandra, In other countries too, they have toll roads which bill their clients on a monthly basis with electronically attach tool tag wherein other drivers have to pass toll booth to pay their tickets before they could pass which others driver find as annoying. yeah, you're right if their other alternatives routes you could go travel on those road without having to cross in roads toll and saves a lot. thanks

If I need to get into my destination very fast, then I have no choice but to use the tollways even if I have to spend a certain amount. using the tollways is a beeze really, you will be able to save time and energy going into your destination and with a face smiling unlike if you are going to use the public roads, you will really get annoyed and irritated by the long traffic and annoying drivers who are also irritated of the traffic just as you etc. In my opinion, I think what you are going pay at the tollgate is worth the convenience and piece of mind you will have while using the tollways.

hi dekada, Yeah, that's true and very convenient too citing the tool booth now is built with electronic technology which makes the motorist swipe their toll ticket/ID or I- pass and in a matter of seconds they could pass at the entry and exit point without hassles. In other countries too they develop more advance tool system fee system where the motorist cars have automatic tagging system where they could automatically pass without the need to pay as they are deducted from their accounts those toll fees they use and bill monthly just like in Texas, USA. Their are also drawbacks when the system encounter glitch thus, resulting in delay and miscalculation of toll fees. Finally, using toll roads is good to those who are on the rush and for those who do not like to experience traffic. thanks

Well, in reality it depends on what the Tolls are for, and if they are really benefiting anyone. A lot of times you will see tolls added to things to help with fixing the roads, etc. and sometimes you will see tolls to help if you are a single driver wanting to drive in the car pool lanes as well. For me it depends on if it is necessary to get somewhere faster, or just a convenience thing where you could go around if you had too. But if it is helping improve the roads and that area of road really needs fixing, it could be a Great idea for sure.

hi kraussehome, The toll roads is specifically design to alleviate the traffic along the metropolis and usually those who could avail of it are the types of motorist who engage in business like those shipping companies, cargo truck, buses, commuters transport and most if the times it is frequented by private owner vehicles who could afford to pay the toll fees as long as they could reach their destination faster the toll hike would not bother them enough. thanks.

I think with the implementation of road toll,s it's meant to keep traffic congestion at bay, so that others will be looking at other alternatives if they dun wanna pay or whatever.. BUt over here, the reasons for toll, is to keep private vehicles on the road, and asking ple to be taking moreo f public transports.. lol =D As there are too many cars on the road now, causing pollution which is not good for mother earth.. As such, there are alor of such tolls around the country, and it's not cheap, especially when prices are much higher during peak hours.. hehe

yeah, most Toll roads here are managed by international toll operator from other country and they just rent the roads from the government then pay taxes. That is why even though their is a lot of protest the government could not have over all control as they are benefit to the revenues. Driver have many choice but to those commuters who want to get to the shorter routes with less traffic they opt to pass on the toll roads...
• Philippines
9 Nov 09
hi kun, Yeah, that's right and toll roads would not be call such names if their is no toll fees as many driver have complain especially in my country in order to enjoy good roads they have to pay and that is not by one direct journey but also with return journey. Then, have to stop with many toll gates situated in the highway before one could pass and have more shorter routes basically form skyway routes away from parallel roads where it is congested and with pollution from honking cars. Then, other protested as they are paying taxes and they are demanding the government to lower the toll rates then the government tell the transportation operators that it is privately owned by international toll operators from other countries and the one who dictates the toll hike. it may be useful to pass along the toll roads if one is in a hurry and their is no alternatives routes to one destination. Whereas if one have other means to travel without paying toll rates then it is better.

I think it might be the same term here in my country; we call it ERP charges. And we need to store up some values in this thing called the Cash-card. So, with this card charge, one is able to go through certain roads that would be charged. I think generally it's alright in order to control the traffic flow in my country, since it's small and filled with so many cars. Now, during peak hours, roads are not as congested as before. Still many, but not as worst off.

hi zed, In my country the equivalent of ERP, is call as ePass, made up of electronic transpondent tag attach to the windshield convenient that allow motorist to drive through designated ePass and mixed lanes and the toll is automatically deducted to the clients accounts. It allows drivers to cruise by at speeds up to 25 mph while others are waiting in the cash toll lanes. It really saves time and very convenient during the peak hours.

ion my place, they don't collect much for toll gates, you gotta pay for any one toll gate and u can pass any no of toll gates for free... toll gates are not present everywhere, only in highways and other district limits.. in highways to maintain the roads, district limits to collect for trespassing the new district.. i prefer to travell in non-toll gate areas..

hi gunagohan, That a good things as in my place when i ride a private bus they used to pass many toll booth for almost 5 times before reaching the terminal as it is the only way to get fast to the routes in toll roads have no traffic compare to the parallel roads where most of the public transports makes the traffic congestion worst very slow and annoying. it could make any person day feel bad as when you are rushing then you pass along the main routes you gonna be sure late for appointment plus suffer from air pollution if you are riding in an open window public vehicles. thanks,

hi flower21, Yup, as they are built to make the driver feel at ease to pass along a wide roads with less traffic, very convenient, and saves a lot of times then resort to less fuel consumption as driver do not need to stop longer compare to traveling in a parallel public roads. thanks.

roads with toll charges - For the long run, I prefer the roads with toll charges.
For the long run, I prefer the roads with toll charges. These roads be owned by the government are more formal. Although people have to spend some money when use toll roads, they can enjoy more convenient and fastest service to reach their destination on time. As you have said above, the toll fees are used by the government as uses in maintaining the existing roads, then the roads with toll charges can keep good. Although their are lots of fees in using toll roads, if I have chances to make a decision, I prefer the roads with toll charges.

i think it would be better for us not to support these toll roads, supporting these roads and makes our government more corrupt why are we paying them taxes, my yearly taxes amounts to P25 thousand. multiply that to 40 million Filipinos is 1,000 billion, i think that would be enough concrete for the whole Philippines.

hi mrfdg, That's really a great quantitative measurements as set by you and probably it is true somehow the government earn a lot from this toll roads project and it is only right for consumer to demand them to lower their toll fees if they also want to help both the riding public as not all who pass the toll roads belong to the middle income family who could afford its monthly hike.

hi leaf, Using toll roads you could avoid traffic, have wider roads, you could drive faster, then you could reach your destination as most toll roads tend to be built to help clients enjoy short routes availing of the toll rates system provides more security and safety travel along the roads with lot of toll staffs to monitor the drivers and lessen accidents along the roads. thanks

I do not mind paying a toll fee when I use a toll road, because the toll road is usually the quickest and most direct route to where I am heading. There are no toll roads where I live, but I use one almost every time I travel to Brisbane. The problem for me in future is that there are now NO cash booths. That is fine for people who live in the city and use toll roads regularly. I have travelled Sydney's roads a lot, as a passenger in a car that has ETag - an attachment that automatically registers passing a toll point and bills the owner. This allows a continual stream of traffic, with no holdups. There is a fee involved in having an ETag fitted. I haven't yet enquired as to the procedure for an occasional visitor, but I will have to do this before my next trip to Brisbane.

hello neelia, hmmm, when i was still working in Manila, i always prefer to ride in the bus that uses the expressway and with e-pass... coz it makes my travel much faster. but there are also times that its not as fast coz sometimes, traffic builds up near the toll gate...i know that increase on toll fee charges also increase the fare, but what can i do? hehe i am just a commuter and i just pay what is due. i don't like using the service road when i go to work coz it will bring me lots of trouble & makes me late for work.

15 Nov 09
hi ck, Yup, very convenient with less traffic hassles then the epass is good especially those attach in the windshield that is electronically read by the devices the driver could pass in e pass lane then charged to his accounts without paying to the toll booth counters. I observe too that even in toll roads their is also traffic and i think this scenario mostly happen during the peak hours of the day usually passing on the time is is not peak hours is more faster and more safer than passing in the main public routes.

hi chhokie, Yeah, and toll fee rates in my country are increasing every time the gasoline/fuel company increases too their prices. All the commodity increases and although it is more convenient using the toll roads in a longer journey one have to pass many toll gates before reaching destination which are very costly. Unless one find other routes which could takes you to your destination. But, since toll roads gives a lot of shorter routes, it's more safer to travel with lots of security and safety crews displaced in other areas around the roads.thanks.

I've used roads with toll and without toll. Apparently, we need the one with tolls. The roads with tolls are taken care nicely compared to the one without. The toll charge/fee helps to maintain the roads. However, I must say, I wish they lowered the charge a bit. We used the road everyday, and so do million others. Shouldn't that help out already?

hi prinzcy, yeah, very true as all those things you mention are necessary as motorist and drivers have choice to travel on free roads or those with toll fees as long as it fit on their schedules and according to their need. if they are on the rush it is best to travel by passing on the toll roads and pay for it. As in everything in life to enjoy comfort their is a price to pay and paying toll fees is not an exception.

hi junmae, That is also what I observe and though it is more faster to pass along the toll roads but it is annoying to pay fees every time pass a toll gates. Though, the roads is more wider and not congested with traffic the only problem is the toll rates also increases then most toll roads here in my country is privately owned by international company. Thus, the government could not fully moderate the rates as the company is paying taxes and also help to employ thousand of toll staffs. thanks
