Who makes the virus and what on earth do they get out of it?

I know the answer to this is hackers, but they have got to be the most annoying people in the world. Why on earth would anyone want to make a virus and send it through the computer systems to poor unexpecting individuals like myself.
They must be so sad spending all that time by a computer screen creating things to upset everyone, do they not have anything better to do? Its no better than those teenagers flicking the switch on dawnalds electricity box. Pranksters.
I am having this rant as yesterday my computer completely went. It was a famous trojan horse stomping over my system. It wouldn't even let me get into windows so I couldn't even format and wipe to get rid of it.
So my hubby spent all afternoon until 1am in the morning trying to fix the problems, this morning it took him another two hours. Now we are virus free no thanks to the idiot that made the virus in the first place.
I do so many important things on the computer, my hubby works full time on his computer and as they are linked his wouldn't work either.
Thankfully my hubby has sorted it and I have my beloved computer working again and have a much better virus checker on my comp as it seems the reliable AVG has let me down. First time in 3yrs that AVG has let me down.
Has anyone here had any problems? What anti-virus software do you recommend other than AVG?

I have NO affection for hackers!!! Why do they do it??? ATTENTION!!! One guy who did it said he did it because he had been trying to get a job at Microsoft & they were ignoring him. Once he hacked their system, they hired him to teach them how to STOP hackers. Personally, I think he was rewarded for being a hacker!!! I saw NOTHING that would deter any other hacker from giving it a try. Most hackers are self-centered, arrogant, know-it-all type people.

I can almost understand though the logic behind that, he wanted a job so he did what he did to get it and it worked. But what is the sense in sending viruses to people like me? Or once their in one persons system I guess they just spread or am I way off? I don't know but it just seems completely pointless, like kids defacing a wall with gravity, that is how I see these people. Childish nusiences.

Childish nuisance is a good term for it. Yes, it is much like gang graffiti. The goes to everybody's computer that I know. Then it repeats itself over & over & over. Destroying all those computers gets Microsoft attention!!!

Most of virus develop by antivirus companies. As now they have huge competition so they have to do these so that their user think that this is best. Yesterday I also receive virus in system. I was using quick heal. Not able to detect. Virus did disabled my task manager as well as registry editor. I quickly uninstall quick heal and installed AVG and update it and it remove all virus. AVG is good but not best. Best one is mcafee and Norton.

I have tried Norton but it didn't work for me. I found AVG much better. Now I'm using kaspersky, I hope it works ok otherwise I guess I will have to try Mcafee. Its so frustrating. Thanks for the reply

I think one of the main reasons is power trip, they want to test their knowledge and imagine themselves to be in control of other people's lives. There maybe no financial gains as many are led to believe.
I've been using AVG for a long time and I am satisfied with its performance. I just made sure that I have it continually updated as to be effective. Rumors has it that it can not recognize some virus signatures but I have yet to experience it. So far so good.

I used AVG for 3 years and it was great, it caught everything straight away, but this virus yesterday got through. I am really lucky my hubby managed to fix it. If I was single I would have ended up throwing the computer out and buying a new one and their not cheap. =( I hope all those hackers get things back. What goes around comes around so the saying goes.
They make me really annoyed. Thanks for replying I hope AVG works for all for many years to come I guess I was just unlucky

I think those viruses are made by people who are working for those selling anti virus and those making computers. Obviously the anti virus will not be selling if there is no need for them. So I think they are made by the people who sell computer anti virus.

I guess there is no solution other than to keep swapping and changing your anti-virus. Gets expensive though to keep doing that to avoid all the viruses

Although many viruses are made by these annoying hackers, it may be wrong of you to fasten the blame on them. In fact, most of virus develop by antivirus companies, which is used to test the anti-viruse softwares.
Of course, the one that makes a virus and sends it through the computer systems to poor unexpecting individuals is really dammed. When it comes to the anti-virus software, Norton may be your right choice. As far as I know, it is widely used around the world, which is strong and usable.
Apart from the security software, the awareness of security is really useful too. Whenever you surf on the Internet, remember to be careful all the time.

I don't like norton, I don't find it as effective as others. I am normally really careful when it comes to what I download and files I open on the internet but somehow one slipped through.
And my point was the virus that affected me has obviously been sent through the system, so someone done that. Nothing has been gained by doing it, apart from it being a nusciance for a few hours.
Thanks for your reply

Hi Skye blue: i know how you feel because i think every person that has a computer has at least caught a virus on his laptop. Now the question, how these people, the hackers can be so destructive, why do they enjoy with their actions? There's not an a reason of this behavior but i think that:
1. Some hackers must receive some money for creating a virus. It's simply if there's no virus we wouldn't buy antiviruses
2. Some of them create those trojans to obtain personal information (your credit card number, your email, list of friends)
And third but not less disgusting, there are some hackers that create those viruses simply for fun. I think the more dangerous is the virus they have created, the more "respect" the gain with their friends groups.
I think we can expect a lot of antiviruses simply because there's always a new menace. Unfortunetly we will never be 100% protected but we need to be very careful. Have a nice day.

Thanks and I think you are right on all counts. Getting money for it makes sense, as surely most people wouldn't be that nasty without a reason.

In my opinion, the people who developed the anti-virus are also the people who developed the viruses. They have purposes on why they make the viruses and its for money. They do know how to make the virus then of course they will also have the cure for it.

Hi miiszheiress: i completely agree with you even if we can not prove this. Actually i hope my opinion won't give me a legal issue with any antivirus company. Lol XD. What i can tell you is that antivirus companies are happy with the viruses, if there's no new viruses there's no work and so do the viruses creators. It seems that we, the users are the only ones that don't like viruses at all. Thanks for your answer. Have a nice day.

It makes perfect sense doesn't it? Anti-virus companies come up with a fool proof way of ensure we always need to use their products.

Sending fleas, thousands and thousands of fleas to infest the armpits of whoever created that virus.
We use McAfee, but also spybot and threatfire and malwarebytes. The last 3 are free and I use them whenever I've gotten some sort of spyware type thing that McAfee doesn't catch.

I suppose hackers feel as though they have an advanced knowledge in one subject area and that is everything IT and they can treat the lay person as they wish! I've never had any problems with viruses thankfully and there's one product which I use and I highly recommend it and that is, Norton 360. I have to pay for this yearly obviously but it's well worth it in order to protect yourself and your system from those that would try to manipulate you. I carry out weekly scans of my system and everything is fine. I like the fact that is constantly updates itself and it's always trying to stay one step ahead of new viruses coming out onto the market. Well, good luck with your plans and I recommend you pick up Norton 360, it's the best thing you can do for your system. Andrew

I'm not keen on Norton. I bought it before and it didn't protect my system as well as it should have done. But I guess everyone is different.

We don't know why they are doing that since they smart and doing good things than doing such a mess, right.
I experience viruses in my computer then and I use AVG as my protection from viruses but I notice this is not effective. Now, I used avira. This anti-virus is really good because as the virus enter into computer avira is detected it immediately and prevent the virus from spreading through the computer...have a nice day!

You are really cute.
Who are the people who make viruses?
Depends really. First you have little baby hackers in college who are there on mommy and daddys money, and thus don't have to work. So with all that free time, and being a teenage idiot, they spent their time making viruses.
But also you have ticked off ex-employees. People who lose their job, and get mad, and make a virus to screw up computers at their company, but always make it out into the world at large to reek havoc.
Finally you have people in countries like China and so on, who know they won't get caught since the Chinese government doesn't care what happens in the US.
What do they get out of it? For the nerdy college hacker, he wants to feel empowered. Like he did something others can't ignore. Sort of the "super-nerd" title or something. The ex-employee of course loves revenge. The guy in another country, just doesn't have anything better to do.
So what anti-virus software should you use? Well, hate to tell you, the way anti-virus software works, you'll always have a chance of being infected.
The way anti-virus works is, the company gets a copy of the virus. They document it, and write a definition of the virus. The anti-virus software uses that definition to look around for something matching that definition, and when found, destroys it.
Unfortunately, there is a lag time between when a person releases virus X on the world, and when the company gets a copy of virus X, makes a definition, and uploads it to everyone's computer.
Between the time that virus X is out, and the time AVG uploads the definition to your computer, could be weeks, even months, possibly a year. During that time, you can be infected and the anti-virus software wouldn't know it because it didn't have the definition.
The problem is, all Anti-virus software works the same way, and there will always be a lag time between when the virus is released, and when the anti-virus software is update to find it. Doesn't really matter which software you use, this little problem is in all of it.
This, by the way, is why I use a Macintosh computer. I have used a Mac for nearly 10 years, and can't even remember the last time a Mac Virus came out, and I've never had one on my system.
If you are just using your computer for things at home, you might consider trying out a Mac. They are rather simple computers to use, and I love mine. But if not, AVG is not bad virus software. Just remember to save anything you want to keep, backed up somewhere... just in case.
Later :)

For the most part. If you are in business, and are required to use Microsoft Word, or software like that, then stick with your PC.
Otherwise, it's pretty much the same. Email, web surfing, instant message, playing videos. I do all of that on my Mac. Nothing special, just no viruses, and it doesn't crash much. I'd say about twice since I bought it.
You are a doughnut? Is that like nice and curvy with a sweet surface? lol Just kidding. Couldn't help that. Nice chatting with ya. :)

Thanks for the compliment and your answer just about summed everything up. I must admit I am a doughnut for not backing up my files. I have learnt the hard way. =(
I have never considered a Mac. Can they do everything a standard comp can do?

Philosophically speaking, if there are no viruses, the antivirus companies won't have anything for business.
Anyways, I've been using Avast on my Windows XP for a long while now. So far, I was not infected with a virus and the good thing about this antivirus is that, you can register it for free and it includes protection against viruses that came from sites with viruses or malwares embeded on it.
Just a tip, if you are using Windows 7 right now, better not get it for now because it is not yet 100% tested to be compatible with win.7.

I have heard a lot of good things about Avast and hopefully it will continue to work for you for many years to come. I don't have windows 7, so that won't be a problem for me. I think I will stick with kaspersky for now, but if I get any problems I will probably change to avast
Welcome to Mylot, I hope you are enjoying your time here.

Well first you create a demon and then sell weapons which can kill it.
It all make sense, doesn't it?
What I am trying to say is that:
It is quite possible that manufacturers of anti-viruses and anti-malwares are actually involved in creation of viruses, directly or indirectly.
If there are no viruses in the existence, no one will buy anti-viruses.
P.S. -- I am merely stating a possibility and not pointing out on a particular manufacturer.

Virus was invented, as I know, to stop burglary of costly software. But nowadays these pests feed on common people using their tool, virus. All are not bad but most are ugly. They always prefer harming people other than helping. But if they are the missile launchers, then definitely there missile are powered by the anti virus companies. Just look at the booming status of the anti virus companies you will get a clear picture.
You may use Avira antivirus. It is free and have high performance. I know that because I have it. But only the problem in free edition is when it caught a virus in a file it asks to destroy and when you do that it destroys the virus along with the file. So there is a minor risk if you don't mind. Otherwise you may prefer the premium edition though don't know much about it, especially its performance in separating the virus from the file and destroying it.

I do not understand the logic behind people creating these viruses either!
I was using Trend Micro software for my computer when I was using Windows and my wife still uses it on here two computers. It is pretty good!
I no longer use Windows and am using a Kubuntu Linux operating system. I no longer have any anti virus software at all and have been told that I do not need it! My friend who works for IBM says that he has been using this system for four years with no anti virus software and has not had any issues. There is one that I can install for free if I want to, but I have not done it yet!

Coming to antivirus better than AVG, there is Comodo Internet Security which is free and offers antivirus, firewall and anti-malware in one package. Along with it spyware terminator. It asks your permission to run if any new process wants to run on your system. It also displays the details of that process and what software started it. So even if your antivirus fails to detect it(Comodo never failed), you can stop it using this spyware terminator. I installed both and to my surprise, spyware terminator also included an antivirus too which has to be downloaded from internet. But it is not as effective as Comodo.
Coming to why these people make virus, there are some people who target some companies due to frustration and there are other who are just fanatics and lunatics who just waste their knowledge and power on these dirty damn viruses and Trojans. I experiment a lot and has been infected a lot of times with these viruses and I found avast home edition before this Comodo, but now, I recommend Comodo Internet Security.
