elder cat now at home

That was one very happy cat, we got him home and let him out of the carrier, he rubbed each of us and headed for the food. He has lost more weight and is only strong enough to lick his food a couple of time so it's back to force feeding him every two hours. We could tell when we picked him up that the Vet didn't have much hope for him, but he is such a fighter and wants to live so we will do whatever it takes to get him eating again. Any advice is welcome and of course all prayers and good wishes. Thank you all.

Glad to know that he's now back home. I'm surprised that the vet did not give any advice about further care and feeding.

We have Vet instructions and are following them as much as possible, I just wanted to know if anyone had experiences with trying to get and elderly cat to eat, once they stop eating it's very hard to get them started again on their own.

Thats good that they did give you advice. I've been in this situation myself with a sick cat and I know that it is very difficult. Force feeding might be the only way. You might try a meat paste that can be squeezed into his mouth, and also a thick meat broth that he can lick up.

It's nice that you keep fellow mylotters posted about your cat. I'm glad you finally got him home. I haven't had a cat who has gone through what yours has but some of my cats have had surgeries at one point for various reasons. The most I've done for them is get them their favorite food, medicate them accordingly and spend time with them, whether it's just petting their coat or cuddling them. Some of my cats, I had to feed with a syringe just so they'd recover well. It was very hard and I have the scars on my forearms but, they all pulled through. I think just do the best you can for now and only time will tell. I do hope your cat pulls through and recovers. Best wishes and prayers.

One of my cats used to do that when we had her spayed. She'd be cranky for a while but she'd settle down after. I hope your cat continues to feel better. I know how hard it must be.

This is great news :)) So even kitties are glad to get out of the hospital :)) When I'm feeling yuck, I find something liquid easier to handle than something solid. Is there the equivalent of Ensure for pets, perhaps? Best wishes with him...and for him. Karen

all I can find so far is a paste that is in jell form, I am adding this to what I give him. I may go into the expensive pet store and see what they have.

I hadn't heard about the paste, but that sounds good. I wonder if they have any information or liquid recipes online for sick pets? It's sad to see them suffer and get old, and yet, as you've said, this kitty seems to be a fighter who wants to live :)

Hi,i am glad your cat is back home with you, sorry he is still not eating.Have you tried tuna with a small amount of iams in it so that the iams is also soaked in the fluid that is in the tin of tuna so that you can mush it up together or liquidised in a liquidiser. Most cats will eat tuna and iams when wet will mush up easily, they say cats need less iams.My cat had a problem with eating due to a tooth removal and this helped maintain as well as put on a bit of weight.Just an idea.Hope he gets better.

My cat lost a lot of weight when he had dental work, a full third of his body weight. He ate canned catfood and yogurt until he was doing better. I still think he needs more dental work. He is pretty old and has a few things wrong but no tumors.

Hi savypat, It looks like you have quite a job on your hands but at least he seems happy to be back home. Although the Vet doesn't have much hope, I think the love you have for him coupled with his being a fighter, may be all that's needed for him to have a full recovery. Blessings.

Are you feeding him canned food? They love that and it's easy for them to eat. If he won't eat that, try some tuna or chicken. I certainly hope he's back to normal soon!

He is getting canned food put through a strainer and mixed with water and a vitamin gell, we have to force feed him with a suringe and he is not happy about that, but it's the only way we can get anything into him at this time. Thanks for your help

hi savypat I am glad you got your cat back and sad he is so poorly.but withall your tender loving care I will bet he will soon be feeling a lot better.I have no real'advice except that it sounds like you know what you are doing. Is there such a thing as vitamins specially for cats? if so give him some vitamins along with the force feeding.did not your vet give you some advice on how to help the poor cat? ask him if he did not as he really should have. shame on him. you have all my prayers for your cat to get well swiftly and my best wishes too.

Hi Pat, glad your boy is home. I have problems getting my sick cat to eat and I find that if I give him his favourite food and slightly warm it up in the microwave he tends to at least have some. The food doesn’t have to be hot just warm enough for it to emanate a smell which is usually awful to us but cats love it. Good luck, I hope he starts eating normally and is on the road to full recovery! It goes without saying that you have my prayers...
