I received an email today the had a comment in it that said...
Two people can look at the exact same Thing and see something totally different.
We have over 189 thousand members. It's mind boggling to me how many different ways of looking at a subject can be offered here!!! What is your opinion on this???

It is like the quote by Dr. Wayne Dyer, "Change the way you look at things and the things you look at will change."
Our opinions of things are colored by our own experiences and how we were raised. There are as many ways to look at things as there are people, so needless to say, no one will ever really agree on all things all of the time... the kaleidoscope of life.

That is soooo true!!! From 20 til 40 I looked at life one way. At 40 I had a life altering experience & my way of looking at things changed drastically. At 50 I had another life altering change & POOF the way I looked at things changed once more. NONE of my opinions were wrong during any of that time. My opinions were right for the experiences I had had so far. However, as life teaches you, there's MORE than one way to look at a picture!!!

You are soooo correct!!! We can choose to be happy or choose to be miserable. I do my BEST to choose to be happy every day that I wake up!!!

I totally agree. Some people who complain a lot about their lives just have the wrong perception of life. Maybe they just need to look at life differently so that they could see how wonderful it is. If you would focus more on the good things that happened to you instead of dwelling on the bad things, you could be happy even if you also have lots of worries.

That is absolutely true. Take for instance, witnesses at a scene. When you figure that not all of them are standing at the direct same place, they may be taller or shorter, maybe vision impaired, maybe distracted, on a cell phone or talking to a child or a friend, etc, who knows what they may have seen or just plain perceived to be happening or happened?
Another example - you have a take out cup... of soda. Perhaps there are different 'sides' to the cup. You're sitting at a counter bar with a friend and she is sitting on the other side. To you, the cup is blue with red writing and a logo on it. To her, the cup might be red with blue writing on it and no logo. Who is right? Both of you? Neither of you? It would make no sense to argue, it would be better to turn the cup around so you could both see that you were both right, but most real life situations don't lend themselves so easily to this.
One more example - perception is most of your reality. People simply perceive things differently. That is the biggest reason for most of the misunderstandings people have. What people get out of things is likely not the intent, and based on that, their reactions don't match what the person thinks they should. I am just as guilty of it as other people, but in my defense I try to explain what I EXPECTED in order to clear up misunderstandings lol.

Yes, we ALL think we know EXACTLY what we have seen. However, in truth, it is NOTHING like we think it is!!!

That's why they say some people get it and some don't. There are different opinions and take on things all the time; including different angles too. Sometimes, people might be too judgmental, while others are more laid-back in their thoughts.

Not only here does this apply, but also in real life. One person can think very little of a matter, where another get very upset about the same issue. I guess that is what makes the world keep turning.

That sounds right. If you think about it, everyone has a different perspective and that perspective influences how we interpret things. It reminds me of the movie Rashomon, where three people saw the same exact crime happen but all three explained it differently in huge ways. So, I think our emotions also has an effect on how we interpret things as well. But I've always wondered if everyone saw the same, in the literal sense. Like, the color green, is the green I see the same exact color as the green you see? It might sound silly, but it's interesting to think about, only because if we can think so differently, can we also see differently as well?

Oh yes, it has been proven that we see things differently!!! If 5 different people see a crime being committed, the cops will have 5 completely different descriptions of what the suspect looks like. Nobody sees the same color skin...Nor the same color hair. Even what they are wearing is perceived differently. Of course, each witness swears their description is exactly correct!!!

I would say that is true. I mean I know when I read something and my mom does also we most of the time have different takes on it. I guess that is a good thing. Means everything will be well rounded out with different opinions...Although I suspect that they will be many who agree on the same thing..but they are many that don't or won't.

Maybe I should introduce my Dad to your Mom. He receives mail or tells me something he has read in the newspaper or heard on the news. Sometimes it will take me up to an hour to figure out what he has read or heard. Of course, it is NOTHING like what was printed or said!!!

I know I've said things here as a joke & be laughing as I type only to have the person reading it rip my head off. I'm then thinking WTF??? I can't even fathom what they read that I didn't feel I had said!!!

I can agree with the part about seeing something different. Not so sure about thinking something different. I can read a discussion, not understand it, go back later and get a totally different idea of what the disscussion means. It could be I'm not totally focused on what I am doing at the time.

I thought I was the ONLY one who had that problem!!! If I run across one that I feel the need to leave a terse response, I sometimes just leave & then go back the next day after a good night's sleep & start over. I have noticed a direct correlation between my mood & the tone of my responses. I've learned to just stay away on days I'm in a bad mood!!!

It's true, we all see things differently. Everyone has a different set of experiences that cause them to view things in a certain way. For instance, two people see a child misbehaving in a store and the one who is not a parent remarks what a spoiled brat they see. The other, a parent themselves, expresses their opinion that the child's parent isn't doing a good job. One situation, two people and two very different ways of seeing things.

So true....So true!!!! My best friend is a Mother of 3 & a Grandmother of 9. She's always telling me how good her grandbabies are & how they mind & respect her. I can't stand to spend any time with her when she has the grabdkids!!! They are loud & unruly & drive me nutz. I'd HATE to see them when they are being bad!!!!

I've realized that in the past, my opinions differented a lot from the people I was around. My parents and I have completely different views on everything. It is pretty crazy, considering how many people exist in our world. How do we manage to live together on one planet, let alone interact? I think the human mind is an amazing thing. One could just ponder about it for years, without getting anywhere. Anyway, I hope everyone has a good day!

Yes, we are all unique, with out own sets of experiences, our own backgrounds, problems even which may shape our perspective on certain things.
That is one of the great things about mylot. We can have discussions and have our minds opened to ideas we are not familiar with, learn to debate respectfully with those who we fervently disagree with, or enjoy a chat with someone when we find common ground.
