My six year old son, does not speak some words clearly. We are wondering if there is something medically wrong with him or if he is a slow developer. Incidentally, he is the last of four children and it was a difficult delivery. Does anyone have any words of advice for us.

If your child is in school, address this to your child's teacher and tell them you'd like them tested by the school's speech therapist. Also might want to have his ears tested, some children have drainage issues which causes a muffled sound in their ears and they repeat how they hear things. Other things might be just common motor skills delay which will come to him naturally and will turn up over time.

Some children do take long to get their vocal aspect correct. It might just be that he is more gifted on some other aspect, for e.g. kids who are very good at visually depicting stuff are usually slow with respect to their vocal skills. But it is always good to show to a doctor and get his/her opinion. It is at times difficult as parents, but sometimes we need to try to understand the child's perspective in such issues, so you can also go to a child psychologist as well to get an idea of the issue. Cheers! Ram

Some kids are slow on speech and language development, this could be the case of your child. Have you asked your pediatrician about this? It is still best to get professional advice just to be on the safe side, so that medical help can be given should there be a need for it before it's too late.

Some school systems have some great and educated speech therapist.... If you have enough money to invest the "Hooked on Phonics" and/or the Sullivan Learning Center would be two good options.... I would try the speech therapist at school because they can actually do a intake and tell you if there is a problem and if these services may be needed.... They will also check your childs hearing to see if it is a speech or hearing problem......

I'm sorry for your six years of old son, you can teach him speaking often, and let he play with others children, he will find the interesting of speaking.

Hello, you should bring him to see a doctor. 6 years old is way too big to learn how to speak now. I have a 5 years old and she was difficult at age 3 but now, no problem... she speaks pretty good. So, you should bring him to see someone. Good luck
