irresponsible students

i think this is a generalisation. some students are stupid and irrisponsible - fair enough. but some people, because of the bad reputatuon we are given in the media - think that we are all or mostly all this way, which is definately not true. 90% of the kids in my year are amazing. they work hard at school, are responsible and active in the community. a few of them like a drink or a smoke but most use their own money. and not all kids are supported by their parents through school, actually a lot of my friends arent. i mean, i have just finished high school, i very rarely drink or smoke and i paid for my own education. since i was fourteen i have paid for my own school fees, uniforms and supplies and will continue to pay my way through university. i went to a public school in a low income area and will yet be starting medicine next year. why is there never a post about kids who come from disadvantaged backgrounds or kids in general about their achievements and hard work?

actually what really makes most of these students irresponsible is peer pressure or the kind of association they find themselves in. Some, its as a result of parents not spending quality time with their children when growing up.

Hi there khizfarm!I do agree with your observation. I am teaching in one of the universities here in our city and I have noticed that a lot of students are in fact irresponsible. I really pity their parents. It must be very hard to work to be able to send a child to school and yet, there are students who obviously take that for granted. I have met parents who come to school, look for their children and tell us that their children have not gone home to their province for quite a while. There are also parents whom we call because their children have not showed up in class for a long time and you'll be surprised that the parents do not know about it. Many of the parents come to us and cry and tell us how bad they feel that their children have taken their education for granted.

We hear about that all the time, especially during the students freshman year. They think it's all about the partying, being free, and having a good time. Though do they realize once they are starting to fail that they have to straighten up and get better grades, scores, and pass. Some will straighten up and rethink about their future, lives, career and start being more responsible. Whereas others just keep using parents money to party, goof off, be irresponsible, and just don't care. We see it on tv alot, friends who do it, family that does it. Anymore with society today, many students, teens, young adults do not care and it is a shame to waste parents money, governments money for college they don't even want to do.
