Is anything sacred anymore?

Today, a report was launched in Ireland, where it was found that for decades, the church and civil authorities either colluded together, or sat back and did nothing and allowed countless children to suffer at the hands of notorious pedophiles from within the Catholic clergy. As a former catholic, I am absolutely shocked, sickened and disgusted by this. While it has been known that there was an element of covering up the truth, I dont think many people would have guessed that the civil authorities turned a blind eye to the criminal actions which were swept under the carpet by the church authorities. Would a story such as this damage your faith? Would you be less inclined to attend church? Would you be more wary of priests? Would you be tempted to walk away from the church and turn your back on religion altogether? Please, share your thoughts. Happy myLotting!

Priest are just as human as the rest of us and are, therefore, sinners. There are many who do worship the Church and/or their priest, and I can see them having doubts. That's the problem for them, they are worshiping the wrong thing. My faith has not been shaken because of what these priest have been accused of doing, because my faith isn't in them but in Christ Jesus. When you put your faith in humans, or a system, you're always going to be disappointed. Somewhere, along the line, they will fail you. Only in Jesus do we have the assurance we need. Remember what Simon Peter said? "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." John 6: 68 & 69, NIV. And in Psalms 20: 7 & 8, NIV. "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm."

Every time I ask you about spirituality, you give me no response. I pooh-pooh your spirituality. It is nothing.

This is sad indeed!!! It is a reminder that all religions are run by people. So many look to religion to find God. I find that strange. I think people should look for God without getting others to show the way. It is clear if you are following people, you might not go where you really want. We should question everything!!! Know that if people ignore this problem, they are telling others that it is OK to do. This is never OK. It's time to CLEAN HOUSE!!

I think that you have hit the nail on the head. It was people, and not religion that did this. The unfortunate thing is that some people thought they were protecting their religion by hiding the abusive perpetrators and preventing justice from happening. Truly sickening, but let's hope a worthwile and long needed cleansing comes along.

Hi sunlight, I also heard this report today and I believe some of the police may have turned a blind eye to this as well. The Roman Catholic has always been a force to be reckoned in Ireland, probably even more so then in other parts of the world. Thirty years ago popular politician in that country would be defeating himself if he ever spoke out against the church. I'm sure it would be much the same all civil authorities. I can't imagine this sort of think not damaging a persons faith. People are leaving the church in droves all over the world, yet there are those who have bee totally brainwashed and who will continue to support the church. I place the blame on the church rather then the individual priest because it is likely that everyone of these 26 were sexually abused by other priests when they were growing up, then encouraged to go into the priesthood. My wife is Roman Catholic and I find many very sincere and honest people in that church. I know it isn't the fault of the ordinary people, there only mistake was trusting their priest too much. My belief is that the church must change and do it quickly. First they must allow priests to marry, second, they much allow women priests. The very fact that a priest couldn't marry has made it a haven for pedophiles. I am not opposed to homosexuality as people can't help who they fall in love with. I think that if the rest of us were true followers of the golden rule, which by the way, is found in all major religions, gays would be able to come out without fear. Most pedophiles are not gay but straight. If Catholics want to remain faithful to their church, they need to speak out and demand change. Blessing.

Thank you so much for that response. Im not sure that allowing priests to get married would have stopped pedophilia. It is a well know fact that most abuse happens within the family circle. Most pedophiles are married... I think the hardest fact to bear is that there was a lot of collusion to save the face of the church, rather than focus on what was really important - the feelings and emotions of those who were abused. Perhaps we should all spare a thought for them.

These kind of situations are disturbing, particularly when the church tries to hide them or pretend they haven't happened. The thing people have to remember is that that behavior would never be approved by Jesus Christ and since He's the one we worship, it should not shake our faith in Him.

Let's face it the Catholic religion has a long history of sick actions. I left that religion a long time ago. But my faith in God is even stronger. Religion's time of judgment is drawing ever closer. It will have to render an account for its many sick deeds. (fyi: I was a victim of molestation and physical abuse by a Catholic religious leader)

This sort of "coming out of the closet" of the skeletons hidden by institutional religion has been happening a good deal lately. Personally I look upon it with great hope. To me it shows a growing willingness for the hierarchy and organizational structure of religion to fess up, confess their wrongdoings and pursue a more honest and open form. These sort of stories make it more likely for me to go to church, personally.

My faith has been the same for quite some time now..I am christian. But I have not affiliated with a church in over 30 years since I came to the understanding that while theology is for God and christian is for Christ, religion is for people as is seen with the many denominations that reflect what people want. So such news would not affect it. Insofar as this news report..perhaps its true..perhaps its not. Its too easy for us to question the validity of any church..But were it true, knowing how easily officials here (in the US) can be bought off, it wouldn't surprise me that the same unscrupulous greed could be evident anywhere that people are involved, regardless of rank...Enjoy!
