If you caught your child's teacher smoking, how would you react?

I know many of my teacher friends who smoke. Im sure it is the same in other countries. What if during one of our shopping trips, you see one of the teachers in our child's school smoking? My friend said he bumped into a parent in town while he was having a puff and he is freaking out!

I don't think it's anybody's buisness that a teacher smokes unless she or he was smoking in the class room or something like that. What a teacher does in their personal life is noone's buisness unless they were doing something illegal. I don't think smoking is.

I don't think it would phase a child that much. They would probably think it was neat at the time. too much gabbing has been going on about smoking in my opinion. Most of the trash talk comes from people who once smoked & now they are the worse ones to talk. I am a smoker, know it's not good for u, yada , yada but i resent the fact that i can't go to a restaurant, eat or have a cup of coffe & can't smoke. That's why i don't go out to eat much.I can stay home home & do as i please.

damneet, I think you should take a better approach towards taking action against smokers. as it is ..many places are banned for smokers. we only have a few places left to take a puff. imagine being a teacher aand caught in public by one of the parents? personally i think parents should give teachers a break.
and MJ, Im with you on this one. very well put! :)

I would probably just say hi and ignore it, because it is none of my business whether the teacher smokes...

This sounds more about self image than about smoking. I would suggest to your friend to calm down, although smoking is frowned upon for health reasons, it is not a crime. Everyone has a personal life and as long as he is not promoting smoking or smoking in class, it should not be a concern. It's a small world and one cannot hide forever, if it bothers your friend so much to be seen smoking, maybe this will help in quitting the habit. Look at it positively instead of negatively.

Hi MJ and rifat,
It is not really a image issue more like a job issue. you see, he is under a bond in the service and is just worried that the parent might write a complaint letter to the school.
yes i do agree that teachers have a life too and he was not glorifying it or whatever. He is just concerned about his job.

I understand the concern of employment. I will admit that I also have a hard time with employers who interfere in personal lives. If his work performance is not affected, it should not be a concern for anyone but those who personally care and himself. I'm a bit stubborn when it comes to others' trying to tell me how to live my life. What is good or liked by one, is not necessarily good or liked for all.
Unless it is stipulated somewhere in his employment conditions that he may not smoke at anytime in his life, his job should not be in jeopardy. If it is a condition of employment, he should look into options to quit smoking.

Well, teachers are adults so I don't see any reason to freak out. As long as that teacher doesn't smoke in class, making the kids inhale the smoke, I see no problem, as he or she's only doing damage to him or herself, but not to the kids.
