I used to go with zone alarm firewall but now I just use Windows firewall since it's already integrated. Do you think it's good enough?

In a word: No. Long answer: I wouldn't trust Windows' Firewall to cover my rear end in a thousand years. Now, sure, it's better than nothing since it actively rejects the most basic connection attempts to your system when there's nothing else in your communication path like a router or something of the sort, but beyond that, relying upon it it's like hoping that a swiss cheese will protect you from bullets: It's far too soft and it already comes with holes "built-in". That's what people who come up with virii and trojans see in this firewall. So, my point of view is: Get something else! It's also not just because Windows' Firewall may have holes that can be exploited or not, but it's a bit clumsy of a system over which you have only so much control and it's hard to do more customized configurations unless you go over a lot of work. With stuff like Zone Alarm Pro (and some other free firewalls) you can make configurations according to networks (useful for laptops and so), configure -exactly- how does a program receive connections from the outside, how to react to outside requests from your system either be it from Internet or LAN (because when on the move and using other networks, I like to think that everyone is my enemy; call me paranoid), gives a very useful log that can be adjusted to logging conditions of your liking, etcetera, etcetera. Additionally, and quite useful, you can tell on the fly to allow programs to access the Internet or not without having to wonder if Windows' firewall is intercepting those (Sometimes it responds way too slow for some reason). This can be useful in immediately tracking down potential trojans that may try to disguise themselves as Windows system files and whatnot. Also, although I haven't tried many firewalls (I'm using ZAP from the near beginning) but Zone Alarm Pro also intercepts certain dangerous calls to modify memory and potential key logging of keyboard and mouse actions which may also indicate trojans on your system that somehow slipped in, so it's an extra help. So, personally, I don't use Windows' firewall anymore unless I don't plan on installing ZAP. Mind you, this is me! There -are- other firewalls out there which may be easier to configure, be more accessible, lighter and whatnot, that may be more fitting of a person's needs and do a job as good as ZAP; it just altogether should be more efficient than Windows' firewall.

Since when is a firewall meant to defend against virii? There are several forms of virus and trojans that are meant to disable Windows' native (crappy) firewall, but it's not like the firewall was ever meant to stop them.

Hello cmdr001, windows firewall is only a defender in our computer to prevent virus to spread out over the computer. They are the main defender from attacks but anti-virus will do the jobs...

Firewalls are not enough to give you protection from intruders, better install if you still don't have quality antivirus with internet protection or anti spyware for optimum protection, depending too much on windows built in firewall will result with only minimal protection for your pc.

no its not enough........Many firewalls now have the ability to block spyware, hijackers, and adware from reaching your computer. This allows you to protect your computer from being infected with software that is known to reveal private information about what you do on the Internet or other computing habits... here is some popular firewalls: http://www.zonealarm.com/ http://www.agnitum.com/ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/ Commercial Personal Firewalls: Black Ice McAfee Personal Firewall Norton Person Firewall Outpost Firewall Pro Tiny Personal Firewall Zone Alarm Pro/Plus

Windows firewall will give you some protection, but it has always been recomended that a person obtain an additional firewall. This is espically important if you have a high-speed connection that is "always" on. Those connections are more susceptable to worms trogains, worms etc. Or so others have said. Right now I don't have any external virus program or anti- anything. All I have are windows defender and firewall, but my computer keeps wanting me to actually get something else in addition to it. I did at one point, and it was like the computer didn't even realize the program was even there. So... guess what I did.... I got rid of it after I got this computer. My subscription was due to run outso I didn't bother renewing. And, so far, so good. To me my computer always seemed to slow down and the anti-virous program and suite tools seemed to take up more resources then was worth it. I keep windows up-to-date, so its not like the bulit-in devices aren't there. And, some tools that windows update offers are also the same other programs offer, only free as on-going protection for your pc. But, bottom line trust your instincts.

I have installed antivirus but I disabled it because it takes some precious resources. I only activate it when I want to scan some rar or I suspect I have a virus. You can pretty much avoid getting viruses if you know what you're doing. I use spybot tho

I think the windows firewall is too basic to stop anything. So, windows firewall is not enough

I just have Windows firewall, but I have Trend micro to take care of anything that might pop up. It scans my computer every few days, and so far it has takenn care of everything that I need it to take care of. I am not going to worry too much, and get too many programs, if the ones I have work well enough for me.
