I was shocked when I read the news report this morning that Philippines Presidentiables reached 80 as the deadline closes yesterday. I was a bit disgruntled with this number because for heaven's sake why these people (some of them are not popular and no qualifications)got the nerve to file for that higher position in the land. I am always disappointed with the way Philippine politics is being handled, maybe that's why the country is still trap in nowhere because even the political system is not at all systematic. I think there's a need to revise the qualifications to run as President or Vice President, these positions are not laughing matters. What do you think about this figure?

Well, I also think that it's better to wear yellow and flashed the V sign. Anyway some of the Presidential aspirants are not, well, deserving.

hey jamela.. i think this is stupid.. hahaha.. lol .. unqualified people wouldnt run in the first place if people vote WISELY. people nowadays vote for the sake of money.. they are being bought by candidates that have given them money to vote for them.. and since former pres estrada was elected president, most people think that anyone can run for president.. since estrada has never had a degree and only reached up to secondary education.. well the biggest mistake of us filipinos is that we either let ourselves be bought or we choose candidates that are making lots and lots of promises but in the end are just some power hungry suckers who steal from the country..

Yes, you are absolutely right!I don't know why we never learn our lessons, every time election comes we have the opportunity to change this bad system, but then again we are traveling on the same road when the election is over and try to bring the frustrations in the street. It's the same old story. But this time I hope we can make a difference finally and choose a candidate who is not corrupt with integrity and humility and who can understand the true agony of the Philippines.

Well, that's how our politics in the country is working. People are easy to deceive especially when money is involved. Just imagine they are willing to spend millions just to promote their candidacy and win for the election! then what happen when they win? Of course they will get back the money that they spent by corruption. That is why we are distinguish as one of the most corrupt country in the world. I just don't know when this will end and who can initiate the changes of our government system. All we need is a miracle from Bro.

Whaaattttt????????? Really???? I didn't know that news!!!! I agree with you, they really do need to revise the qualifications to run for President or vice president.... I don't think they're interested in helping the country, anyway. I think they have other plans on what to do once they're in that position... The Philippines really needs a good leader right now, not just power-hungry president wannabes who'll just take advantage of whatever they have once they're already in position... Let's just pray that God will still bless this corrupt nation... and that a good leader will arise amidst this difficult time...

I agree with you that they should revise the qualifications for President. I'm not surprised to that anymore. Some are qualified som are only nuisance. Yes I agree our country really needs a leader who are honest and not greedy for power.

I think it's high time now that the qualifications to run as President and Vice president in our country will be revised to avoid waste of time. Just imagine the qualifications are only: Bona fide Filipino citizen, of legal age and can read and write. Gosh, even a simple sidewalk vendor can legally file for candidacy. It is just ridiculous to think in the first place that COMELEC will undergo a strenuous process of deliberation who will be considered bona fide to run or a nuisance candidate where in the first place it can be prevented to happen.

Thats why in my personal opinion, we should go back to 2-party system. In todays system, everyone could file to run for the president even with no qualifications or just plain insane. Comelec will decide on it in the end whether that someone is nuisance or not. Most likely they will chop it down between 6 to 10 candidates, but still that number is too much. We should have a much organized, well coordinated 2-party sytem where platforms is the main criteria to show to the public and not this popularity and the whole she bangs.

I agree with you that we should go back to a 2-party system to be more serious with purposes and objectives so that voters can determine fully who is more deserving and who is not. With the presence requirements of Philippine Presidential candidates it is very possible for a plain and ordinary man in the street to file his candidacy which is ridiculous.

I don't find it troubling. This happens every CoC filing period, nothing new. What troubles me is that out of the huge number of aspirants, there are a handful that are competent, and out of the handful that are competent it is very hard to name one who isn't corrupt, and if there was any, they are hardly capable of winning. What is most troubling in our political system isn't the issue of competence anymore, it's the issue of morality. Candidates claiming they got their wealth through hard work while we all know how they cheated to success. This is more troubling than any statistical number of presidential candidates there ever will be.

Yes, I completely agree with you. It seems that the biggest issue now adays among politicians is morality and integrity. Only few remaining politicians have that capability and if they have that, they hardly win because of the dirty tactics of the opponents.

Although it may sound ridiculous right now but I think it is what democracy is all about. If everyone in the right age and mind is qualified to vote so can anyone run for any political position they desire. That is they are in the right qualification dictated by law. So I am not surprised if there are many who filed because that is their right as citizens of this country. From what I know this list will be shortened in time because they will have to remove the nuisance candidates in the list eventually. The essence in there is that Comelec is just not allowed to reject anyone from filing candidacy unless the person they will remove will undergo what we call as "due process" can they be remove from the official list.

I think that happens in other countries too. In the US there are independent candidates that also ran and some are also lunatics that try their luck and before election time comes they are deleted from the official list. I believe accepting is just ceremonial to not say that there is discrimination of who will submit or not. After their submission they would evaluate each candidates and those that will be removed from the list are given 3 days to submit an appeal. After that then the official list will be released. I think that is just it. We should respect other's rights as citizen whether it may look funny but then we should look at the perspective that every citizen can exercise to ran for a political position. Whether it is just a waste of time or not it is exercise of democratic rights I guess.

Yes, that's the right of every citizen to file for COC, but one thing I disagree is the overflowing political parties in the Philippines. It would be better if we have only few political parties.

That made Democracy a laughing matter in Philippine politics. Other countries who have a democratic form of government never have this kind of situation when election comes. Only in the Philippines.

Yes, it is indeed funny to think why on earth these ordinary and plain people ambitioned to become President they did not even know how difficult it is to become a provincial governor or a municipal mayor how much more a president. Most probably out of 80 candidates there are only 10 who are qualified.

Well, I think the there's no need to revise the qualifications since the COMELEC can disapprove anyone whom they think is not capable to campaign nationwide. Yes, these positions are not laughing matters but it does not mean there are sufficient qualifications needed. If there were, what do you think it would be? A degree holder? At least a public servant for 5 years? Will that be enough to say that he will be a good president. I think that the Filipinos should only be smart enough to know who are the candidates that are at least capable of leading the country.

Actually there are 99 aspiring presidential candidates and COMELEC is having a hard time now because of it. If you try to change the rules on who should and should not run there will be rallies all over because people will tend to say that their rights were violated and we as a democratic country should abide by the laws and prioritize democratic rights Sad isn't it? Some people aiming for the president's seat come May 2010 are somewhat impulsive and majority of them, if I may say, are inexperienced. I admire their patriotism though if that's the root cause that made them decide to run. Our government is a circus if I were to describe it.

Yes Philippine politics is really very popular when it comes to the number of politicians aiming for a position in the government. All of them promise to serve the country but what happen when they are already int he position, problems of the country is never been solve. They are using their power to control and make themselves richer while the poor people becomes poorer. Even 6 months before the election period blood shed off because of the aim for power. When can be this situation of our country be stabilize? And who will do the move to make our country peaceful and improve the system of politics?

We have the same frustration and questions too. I think we have a share for this situation too, if only people are making wise decisions when Election comes maybe this will not happen again and again. So let's be wise this time and select a candidate who is not corrupt, greed and selfish.

Last i've heard it already reached 90. Well that's really a lot to choose from and i think they should really revise the qualifications to run for President so they wouldn't have a hard time to lessen it to those who have good qualifications and that all the voters won't have a hard time in choosing our leader.

The silly thing about this whole situation is that after the COMELEC allowed those people to file, they will be sucked anyway, so why they will be allowed to submit the form?what a laughing episode in our lives.lol!

This news was really a shock to me but I think the number of presidential aspirants will decrease since comelec will conduct a screening on them.

i don't see any wrong with the intentions of those people who wants to lead the country. anyway, the commission have the last word in whom to be declared official candidates. by the way, as i have heard it, it's 99 persons who filed their certificates of candidacy. i told my wife, i should have filed mine, so the number could have reached 100.
