I had the job.... then I didn't!

It's a really long story but the short version is that I am on the bottom, ready to attempt a climb back to the top. I was so excited the other day. I put in several applications at different locations. One called me for an interview and I had a very successful interview. They called me back yesterday for a "job offer." So I went in and completed the paperwork. I was to return today for orientation and begin on Sunday evening. This morning I got a call from a manger who explained to me that their district manager had come in last night and because of the budget he froze all new hires. So I had the job and then lost it before I could start it! It's not that big of a deal I suppose; but I took it rather hard. I am nearly 50 and jobs are not that easy to get. Anyone have anything like this ever happen to you? How do you deal with it? I wish there was a place to file a complaint!

Hi macdingolinger, A similar thing happened to me a few years back, where I had received a letter saying I had got a position at a particular company. I had passed the aptitude tests, the interview and the medical. So I was overjoyed and the position was a good one. The letter more or less implied that a I would be informed of a start date in due course, then just two weeks later I received another saying that there were no current positions in my area due to a hiring freeze I wrote to my local TD about it to complain but I did not get any results. So I know how you feel it can be such a let down to lose a job like that. Good luck with the job hunting

I am very sorry that you did not get the job. Seems a bit odd that the manager would say that, this is any stores busiest time and usually hire lots of temps this time of year. But don't worry, something will turn up, I know you are a bit bummed out now but don't give up.

Yep! It's disappoinment to the max! I was so excited as it's a sports store and a rather large chain store at that. Anyway. The manager told me he did not hire the temps this time of year and plan on letting them go after the first of the year. So... who's telling the truth and who is not? I'm kinda bummed and won't look for a little while.. until I get too hungry!

Attrition. Hired and fired all in the same day. That's got to be a record. Perhaps someone should fire the district manager for such a blunder? cdrxo

Somehow I doubt your age or experience had anything to do with it. I'd suspect, that the district manager was looking for that "special someone", if you get my drift? Don't sweat it. These guys are a dime a dozen. You KNOW you're better....and really...what kind of a working relationship do you think you'd have with this guy, anyway. Trust me, you're better off. Now, GO GET 'EM GIRL! Cheers; cdrxo

Now you're talking! They don't think so much about the lives that ca be so affected by what they may think of as a "little" thing! It was major for me. I haven't been able to shake it to get back out and get more apps in...still have to wonder if it was my age.

According to the news, and radio, some statistics shown our economy is gradually bouncing back, but I don't see the signal. In contrary, there were a lot of people still not having job yet. What is wrong in this picture? Is that statistics a smoking screen? I wish you luck.

Phew I didn't think they really could do that.. but i guess if you hadn't signed a contract anythings possible! Like i recently got a new job and my dad kept going on about I can't lend you any money (for a car) til you receive a contract. I didn't understand it myself when I had been offered the job but I guess safety comes first!

most places don't offer contracts anymore. i signed a paper as to when I was scheduled to start and how much I was to make. That's about it.

That can really frustrating indeed. It happened to my sister. She was applying for an Online English Teacher to teach Koreans. Training was hard at first but she was able to pass it. They then tell her to come on a Monday. But when Monday came, and she wall all ready to leave, she got a text from the them that she has to wait and they will call her. Till this day, they never called her. I say boo-hoo to those types of companies. Sorry for their loss because my sister will leave for the US soon.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I figure too.. It's their loss. I will go on to another company and be a wonderful assett for them. Too bad for the sport store!

Yes, you are right to say that. Go find some other company where they will want you. Good luck with your job hunting!

Not exactly like this but... I had heard through the grapevine a roadside produce stand was hiring and in desperate need of a replacement person for someone who was leaving the job soon. I went over and applied, got a call by the end of the week telling me I was hired, but on a call by call basis. Meaning they'd call if they needed me and my hours would be erratic. But they promised it'd level out soon as the other person officially left. Well I got called maybe twice, then they had me come in for a whole week but only working half days. After that week, the person who was leaving decided they didn't want to leave. So they let that person stay and told me they didn't need me anymore. I felt pretty shafted because hey they hired me and at last minute this person changed their mind.

That's so wrong! At least you made a couple of bucks in the shift! I don't know why people think they can play with others like that! It isn't fair... but that's life I suppose!

Yeah, the jokes on them though because I got a better job after that doing something I like.

I am really sorry that happened to you. I would have been very upset. If it were me, I would write a letter thanking them for the opportunity and asking them to keep me in mind when the hiring freeze is lifted. I understand that you are angry and hurt, but it's always best not to burn your bridges. You never know when someone from that company might recommend you for an opening one of his associates has. Good luck to you!

The dude who called this morning said they would keep my information in a file for after the first of the year when they would reassess the budget. He said I may be offered a job at that time if there is one open. My concern is that if they have such internal issues and so contradict themselves, are they a company I really want to work for? Will they be this inconsistent when I am already working there? Who can live like that?

Yes I know exactly how you feel I had lost my job in September they just closed the door and said it is what it is and did't even pay anyone their last check and I have been looking since then and I am so fed up with these stupid Temporay placement places telling you they have jobs and after all the tests you take and pass and also the gas you wasted on getting there all they can say is we will put you on the list. This irks me so bad I son't see how they even have a job and do nothing all day!I am in my late 40'S and it has been so hard to find a job I guess they would rather hire some unqualified person to screw the job up and not show up to work everyday sorry I am really irked right now when I think about things like that it doesn't seem fair to us!O well good luck in your job search and have a nice day

I experienced somewhat the same thing a week back. I applied for a position and passed everything when it was my turn to do the final interview like formality sake they told me that the boss stopped interviewing already. Then they mentioned I will be under the active list wherein they will call me once the position is reopened again. Its like you got to the finish line but stepped one foot back. At first it saddened me but then I said to myself, there is something better for me out there. So do not lose hope something better will come your way!

Yeah, maybe there is something better out there. I had already done the interview and signed all the papers and was supposed to do orientation today... then they called! Sheesh! I believe all things work out in the end... somehow!

Sorry to here you got a job only to fine out later that you did not really get a job. It is getting harder for older people to fine jobs with so many companies laying of people and that means there are 100 to 200 applications for just one job. We just have to keep trying something will soon open up.

It is more difficult to get jobs as we get older. The funny thing is that I am in better shape and can do more now than I ever could in my younger years... oh well, we'll see what turns up.

My situation is not exactly like yours but our similarity right now is that We are both unemployed.I'm 27 years old and my situation resulted from harassment at work.I was working at a very reputable bank when this incident happened.Though I made a formal complaint to the human resource department, nothing much was done. The worst part was that I continued to work under the same manager and the situation got worse.I resigned two months after I filed the complaint. I would have loved to drag that company to court, involve the labor union and women rights' groups, but I decide to focus my energy on moving on. It's the best thing you can do for yourself.I'm encouraged by the fact that you want to attempt to climb back to the top.

It's sad that our systems are so set up to protect the violator and not the victim of such circumstances! Usually, inside companies it does not work like it should! You are probably right to just move on. Some day there will be punishment for the oppressor. Gotta climb out... refuse to stay on the bottom!
