Do you buy stuff endorsed by celebrities?

Uhmm, I don't really know if this discussion has already been posted. Besides, I can't go wade through all the discussions similar to these before I post. But anyways, this is mine and what I have to say here is probably a bit different from what others have started. I come from a country where the entertainment industry is full of crap. Yet, from observation products endorsed by so called celebrities are doing quite well. People are buying products they are endorsing. Okay, maybe not all of them are crap but most of them are anyway. One way or another just by looking at some of their advertisements you could almost smell crap from them. Without naming names, there are some that aren't consistent to the product or even the ad script. Making one liners that makes no sense, lame or whatever. Some products don't add up and the endorser is totally a mismatch to the product. Some even show that they are the authority in products which in fact they are not. Some even have the nerve to say their name and then entice you to buy that product. It's that too much rubbing it in? Why in the world would I give a damn about who you are, and what does the product have to do with you anyway? Here's one good example. A celebrity who knows nothing about computers is telling us about computers and buying this and that. Yeah, fine, Okay, I do have my own very few local celebrities that I truly like, but that doesn't me I'd buy what they endorse? Do I look that stupid? If the product isn't that good. I don't buy it just because a famous celebrity, athlete, doctor or who the devil he is endorses it. No pun intended here just so everyone knows what's going around the world. Do you or do you not buy products just because they are endorsed by famous people?

I love perfumes. I don't even put them everyday but only at some occasions. The only thing I would do is to look at the design of the bottle and smell the odor of it. I came accross a perfume which isn't from a celebrety but a popular person who makes perfumes ....it smelled like donkey piss.

well this is just my opinion and I don't want to offend anyone who put that perfume on It's called "L'ai du temps" by Nina Ricci. Her other are ok but that one is a no no for me. The cousin of my mom came from France to visit us and she gave us this perfume as a gift cuz she knew we were collecting. I think that she also got herself a bottle and used it as well because we though that she was sweating and didn't take a shower for weeks. Beautiful bottle but horrible smell. How did it make it into the market!? I wonder...

Yes we don't want to offend anyone. But it is true that there is a specific scent for each of us. I remember a relative who wears some perfume that to me is quite sharp for my nose. Perhaps it is appealing to some people. Some scents work for some and some don't. My mom has lots of perfume and maybe it's just me but I am very much annoyed by her choice. Anyways, that's how it is. Lol.

I don't care if it's endorsed by a celebrity or not. If I need a product or like it I'll buy it no matter who endorses it or not. I think the only thing these endorsements do is just make the name of the product more familiar. I don't think many consumers buy products just because they are endorsed by a "celebrity".

Some people probably are easily influenced to buy a certain product by who it is endorsed by. The people of third world countries can't afford to just buy anything and should be pickier about what they purchase. I guess that can be said for any country nowdays with this economy like it is.

To be honest I usually couldn’t care less who endorses a product, it is my decision whether to make the purchase or not. It does depend on the product and the endorser though. For example I was in the pet store attempting to choose some cat biscuits for my new cat and out of all the brands I chose the ones that were recommended by a popular TV vet who I really like. I figured he would not put his name to something that was not good for the animals as he is a highly respected animal doctor, besides they weren’t even overly expensive which is surprising!

Yup in the case of a well known TV Vet, we can all see that the guy is in the right field. He is after all a vet and it's his name on the line. See, you can't sell a toothpaste product and tell much about it's technicalities if your a plumber right? I'd rather check out a product endorsed by some guy in the same field. Like if I go for tires. I certainly would check out tires recommended by Paul Newman who is a celebrity but is also a well known race car driver which is a fact. Checking out the product before buying then check out how some of my friends feel about it. Then simply decide to buy from all the info I've gathered. In this case Paul Newman knows what he's talking about since he's into the racing scene.

hiya lovinangelsinstead21. Yup, I guess so for the blue eyes. Paul Newman isn't just any actor he is sort of a legend. As for the famous sauce brand, I would check it out. It doesn't really take a real expert for taste and I'm sure a man of his caliber has really good taste. Sometimes when it comes to food, some celebrities will do. It doesn't take rocket science to tell if some food or seasoning tastes great. So I can forgive a celebrity for sort of endorsing food or the like. Fernando Alonso, spanish race car driver hmmm. a funny and real good story. I think I have heard of him. cheers!

Hiya wolveren,
If Paul Newman recommended tyres (Tires) I would probably take a look at those tyres too.
But most of all because of those beautiful blue eyes I would have probably bought one of his famous Sauce Brands just out of curiosity more than anything else.
It´s the same as our famous Fernando Alonso Racing Driver he recommends things too to do with Cars and all that.
He has´nt recommended anything about Brakes however. That´s a bit of a joke because he has not won many Races lately People have begun to call him Frenando Alonso which in Spanish means "braking Alonso" means he puts his brakes on for everything.

I like humerous commercials. Like the old one with Dennis Hopper hawking Nike's in a football locker room. "Bad things man!" It also amusing to see him talking about retirement now. I sometime listen to commercials where there are voice overs (you don't see who's talking) and try to see if it's a recognizable voice. Like Peter Coyote is big, maybe Leonard Nemoy. But I don't care who is hawking what. I buy what I buy and if it's on my DVR I fast forward through commercials. The one thing I do like to see every now and then, are older commercials featruing then nobody's who become stars. Like the old, old commercial for the old VW beetle with Dustin Hoffman in it. ("In the from you have a trunk. And in the back you have, - pause -another trunk?")

Hard sell. That's one reason why I couldn't stand the Billy Mays commercials. His load grating voice plus the fact that he talked like he was an expert on everything. It's easy to see how he got his start hawking things on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. I didn't want him to die but I did hope he would go away.

Hi Wolveren,
It does not matter to me who is the endorser as long as i believe in the commodity or it created an impact to me i will buy the product. i go with the quality of the stuff and of course if the price is reasonable enough for the said product. if the stuff i bought was endorsed by a celebrity then it adds some value to it!

It is always the other way around.Usually I am very quality concious in everything I buy.Dresses and household articles etc. They happen to be endorsed by the so called VIPs.I always firmly belief that I am a VIP to my wife and children and to the people who like me.So I don't follow the celebrities way blindly.

Hi wolveren,
Yea, the star factor.
I find that it is especially powerful and influential on people who are not that educated. Say you have a whole range of shampoo to choose from and you are not that educated. Which shampoo will you choose?
You run down the aisle and... hey! You saw a celebrity you recognize. You like the way she sings... okay, that's it. I will get that shampoo. It is just that "simple" for those who are not as educated.
For those who are educated AND like to read up on what the shampoo does, then the celebrity effect is not so big a deal.
For me personally, I am a bit partial to the packaging and the substances used. I tend to read a bit before deciding.
Cheers!

I agree, everyone should try to know more about a product before trying it. But we live in a society that doesn't afford us all that time to investigate every product in the market. The very reason why critics and endorsers are used by companies to channel their choice of information to the public. Some or even the best of us may have to take some of their word for it to test a product, then we give the final verdict if the product is truly worthy of our appeal.

Hiya wolveren,
One night ago I heard on the Television that David Beckham this is probably a joke as well he trod on a Famous Painting and now it is worth 300,000 Dollars because of him treading on the Painting.
Gonna get going with my Paintbrush too.
But even if he did tread on it I would not buy that I like David Beckham but not that much as to pay that much for an Oil Painting.

Hi wolveren!
I buy things because I need them. I buy things because they provide satisfaction. There are those that I buy because it's the only one I can afford. The endorsement of a specific celebrity is not important for me. No matter how famous they are.

the endorser doesn't really matter to me.I buy products that are good for my skin.I buy products that suit my skin well.I buy products according to my preference.I don't need a celebrity telling me to buy this product.I am the one who is going to buy the product,so it is important that it suits me.I don't want to spend money on products that won't give me the results I want.

No, and I can't think of one at this point. Usually I believe they are just being paid and haven't used the product. WHich is enough to send me in an opposite direction.

I check out the expert too you know. See how far they would go for endorsing a product. I test it myself and see how worthy it is. As a matter of fact I share my great discoveries of new products I find really good with friends. That makes me a satisfied buyer and an endorser too. Lol.

Leave alone those that are endorsed by celebrities I dont even go for designer clothes which everyone lines up for. For me I will wear what suits me and that which makes me comfortable. I will try to be in line with trends but certainly not because they have been designed by some wellknown designer.

Not really, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work. Same thing for commercials, you get influenced by it subconsciously so it's a good business for them. A celebrity who promotes or endorses works too.

Yeah well. Having a famous person endorse a new product does have it's advantages. How else would we know of a new product of interest is available? That is actually the first wave we get of information. The next step if we are interested about the product is to get feedback from people who actually have tested them. Then we test it ourselves without even buying yet like from friends. Then if satisfied we go and grab the goodies if it's worth it. cheers!

it depends upon the product and the one who endorse it..if i think the product is good and affordable why not buy for it, and if the one who endorse it is one my favorite celebrity, i probably buy it..hehehe..thats me.

Yes of course. We are human anyway. We sometimes bend our rules just for the sake that we love a certain celebrity. hehehe. For instance if my really hot celebrity female idol endorses a bikini. This doesn't require any expertise for sure. I would know my idol would look good in it. In this case I let that pass and go buy my girl one and hope she looks as good as my idol. Lol. But not all the time for me. thanks for your response.

Yeah like I said, clothes don't really get into the expertise thing. It's how celebrities or models look good in them. But I wouldn't quite go for a $600 dollar suit just because my favorite action star wears them. hehehe. Besides, I can't afford it. Lol.
