This discussion was born as a result of my discussion on recycling the other day. Some of the people were talking about reusing things, which I do to a certain extent, but it got me to thinking that I should be reusing more than I do.
So, I'd like to know what are some ways that you reuse things in your house. It could be your bleach bottles or milk bottles or anything, please share with me.

I reuse lint from the dryer and toilet paper rolls to make fire starters for camping.

You know, I would have never of thought of this if it weren't for your suggestion. I knew that there had to be something that could be done with the lint from the dryer and that is the reason that I've kept a bucket on top of the dryer and I will drop the lint in there. Now, I know a way that I can put it to use.

Here is a list of things I reuse for other uses:
2 liter coke bottles - cut the bottoms off to catch rain water for garden plants
Milk jugs - bottoms cut off of those make great hot houses for seedlings in the garden
aluminum cans - different art projects
old tires - great during this time of year to set a ball & burlp christmas tree in.
Everyone should be able to come up with something to reuse at least one old item in their house. Take responsibility to reduce, reuse & recycle.

You are completely right that it is everyone's responsibility to cut down how much we are wasting in our lives. I really like the milk jug suggestion, it is something that I will definitely be using next spring.

Making your own paper sounds like a lot of fun. And, I have to admit that I've never thought of using old egg cartons for organization, thanks for the great suggestion.

Hi Dorannmwin, recyling is very important but even better is reusing. Commonly we reuse old plastic bags. Plastic bags could mount inside a cabinet and provides lidded garbage storage using an old shopping bag. Also, reuse paper bags as school book covers. Or cut used pieces of paper into scrap pieces of paper as a message pad. Coffee grinds can be reuse by keeping them aside and placing them into your garden or soil as fertilizer. Reuse pens and art supplies by donating them to local schools. Try to reuse old toothbrush and use it to clean hard to reach areas like around the sink, drains, faucets and grout. Reuse old seafood seashells by crushing them and using them in your garden as decoration. Try make a pierce of artwork with old metal cans.

We've used the toothbrush thing for about as long as I can remember. They are great for both cleaning in the crevices in the bathroom and we also keep one at our kitchen sink because it makes it possible to scrub inside of cups and things that we wouldn't be able to reach with our hands.

I too have used the butter containers for leftovers and sometimes for bowls as well. This is a great way to reuse something that doesn't at all seem to belong in the trash.

Hi Dorann.
I reuse a number of things. I think I already told you about turning newspaper pages and brown sacks into gift wrap. Large plastic ice cream buckets make nice ways to grow veggies plants on the patio when roughed a bit, painted, and punched with a few drainage holes. The lids make great drainage dishes beneath them.
I buy the best baggies I can find, soak them after use in some hot dish water and drain them over wooden spoons so they don't "mildew." I then use them for dividing the cheaper family size packages of meats and freeze individual pieces.
Junk mail makes good scratch pads and grocery lists. And the grandkids love to play office with them or draw on them. Thick, frayed bath towels can be trimmed and hemmed and used for bath mats, and old shower curtains make good drop clothes for when I'm painting, or to line the trunk if I'm buying plants and potting soil in the spring.
Fabric scraps, leftovers small skeins of yarn and old pillow cases make great doll clothes. Cardboard boxes can be covered with fabric or contact paper and make attractive storage boxes for craft or scrapbooking supplies.
And I use wooden clip-style clothes pins to hang clothes in the summer but to also keep bags of snacks and such sealed...even bags of frozen veggies.
Stray socks and gloves with no mate can be paired for at-home play, and frayed pants can become summer cutoffs or hemmed shorts.
I've even seen people use old work shoes or boots to make unique planters!
That's all I can think of right now lol.

You're right, Dorann. That is a great idea...I'll have to "steal" it lol.

These are all great suggestions. Another one that I can add for the old stray socks and soft gloves is to use them for cleaning your windows and such. Just put it over your hand and after you've sprayed your cleaner, you can use your hand to wipe with and it is a lot more comfortable than trying to use a paper towel.

hi drannmwin I am now in a retirement center in a room with a
roommate. I am a diabetic so every three months I get a box full of strips and lancets. I use these boxes to hold books and magazine, and also some of my large collection of beanie babies.
Also I reuse the plastic bag given to me from the Tustin library to carry books back a nd forth to the library. When I was in our apartment I used plastic bags over again for a number of uses like storing string and dry goods in . and also in the fridge fo lettuce and things like that.

Two thumbs up to you for reusing the bag that the library has given to you. There are so many people that don't reuse bags at all. I too will reuse plastic bags that I get at the grocery store. However, the majority of my reuse of plastic bags does end up in the trash, but still. I have a three year old son that still wears diapers part of the time and I also care for my fifteen month old niece and I will use the plastic bags to dispose of dirty diapers instead of using a diaper genie.
Boxes too are something that I've reused many times. We use them for storage in the children's rooms and also to keep things in that we are not using at the time.

I recycle/reuse in various ways. One of the ways is at work, i take all the extra scrap paper everyone piles up by the copy machine and cut it up into fourths then staple it together to make a notepad. This is very usefull to me because I tend to write bug when I write fast so I have more room than those little yellow sticky notes. The only problem is that it doesnt have the adhesive backing. Another way I used to reuse is I used to make furniture out of cardboard boxes. Depending on the design, these can be very sturdy and even hold multiple people.

That is a great way to make a notepad. When my mother was working in her previous job she would bring home the paper that was left by their copy machine for the children to be able to draw on the back side. I've never made furniture out of cardboard boxes, but that is a very, very creative idea.

I know that I use butter tubs to paint with. I also use milk bottles to put water in and keep them in the car in case of an emergency. With the winter approaching (except in Idaho where we already have cold weather where our temps get in the negative) I also keep a bottle of water and a blanket in case we get stuck somewhere. I also have a flashlight and keep food.

I also reuse butter tubs, but for the most part I use them for storage of future leftovers instead of going out and buying containers specifically for that use. It seems wasteful to me to through away butter tubs when they are still perfectly functional.

How wonderful that you were able to make some money off of things that other people might think of as trash.

That is a great idea. My husband actually used a small carryon suitcase for this same purpose, but I will admit that it is difficult to carry things with you when you are on your bicycle.

Those do sound like a lot of fun to do and it is a fun way to use paper that's already been used.

I reuse almost everything in my home that I can. I use the plastic bags (like from Target or Walmart) to line our kitty litter box and I use them for small trash can liners. My son and I spray painted a ton of shoe boxes all different colors and they are used for storing his smaller toys in his playroom. We screened in our back porch a while back and I took some of the leftover screen and stapled it to the back of a large picture frame (after taking the glass out) and I use it to hang my earrings on. The hooks slip right through the screen and I can see easily what I have. When I only have a small amount of wrapping paper left, not enough to do a package, I use it in various scrapbooks as decorative accents. I love finding new ways to use what would have been thrown away.

I really like the idea of making the shoe boxes more asthetically appealing in order to be able to use them for organization in the children's rooms. I also like your idea for the organization of earrings. And as far as the bits of paper, that is a great suggestion. We've done wrapping paper art here with the left over bits of paper and it was a great hit with my two children and my niece.
