I am relatively new to myLot but I have already noticed an area of concern. I hate to critique small things, but this seems to be an increasing problem in society and on the Internet. I'm talking about spelling and grammatical errors. If this is a writing site, shouldn't we do a better job of checking our spelling? I have already seen a number of discussion topics and responses that are filled with basic spelling errors. Are you concerned about this?

I normally feel your pain. However, I do cut people a lot of slack on this particular site because so many times we are dealing with a language barrier. While this is a writing site, it is also populated by people that may just have a passing interest in writing. Not everyone wants to go pro. I understand what you're saying about taking language for granted. I'm much more critical of English speakers that can't produce a coherent sentence. There has been a lack of strong fundamental skills across the board in most states in the U.S. for decades. Somewhere along the way we have dropped the ball, and subjected kids to a broken educational system. If it bothers you, and you want make a difference, do what I do...tutor. I tutor 20 hrs a week to make some extra cash. I'm eradicating double negatives and misguided subject/verb agreement one student at a time:)

I really should have stated in my original posting that I was not thinking about people who may have a language barrier. Most of the responses have been defending people for whom English is not their primary language. I can't say that I know for sure when people are native speakers, but there are consistent tendencies that seem to suggest people are just being a sloppy in certain situations.

I think the root of the problem is the cellphone text. People use to write text messages in cellphone on whatever spelling they like. This is to make texting easier and faster. That attitude was then transfered to internet wittings therefore making the English (or any other language) to have more misspelled words. I do have concerned over this one and make my own mistakes too. But I see to it that spellings are check when I do write formal notes such as business letters or any other formal work related stuffs.

If they use firefox broswer they will get spell check automatically in their mylot editor. We must realize that a lot of members don't speak English as their 1st language with this site being an open worldwide forum we should expect others from other countries with different languages to make mistake in their grammar.

I do my best but I have never been a good at spelling. I also think that sometimes when we post esp. on topics that excite us we tend to forget things like spelling and such. It happen in the real world as well. At town meeting people forgot manners to be heard. So no I am not concerned about errors, I like to cut people some slack and hope they cut me some as well.
